A field blend of 75 percent cabernet sauvignon and 25 percent malbec grown at 4,500 feet in the Uco Valley, this is delicious in its generous flavors of candied cherries, violets and black pepper. The fruit seems to flutter, dancing over pointed tannins, and yet the texture is silky and gentle. The vivacious acidity is typical of Zorzal’s wines, which tend to the cool side. Cellar it for five years to allow the fruit to gain in complexity.

The 2012 Field Blend is produced with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Malbec, harvested together (the Malbec riper, the Cabernet a bit greener), destemmed and fermented together (10% of the stems were put back into the wine) and aged in used barrels for 20 months. They want to present the benefits of the co-fermentation which they say produces a greater, more complex character than when fermented separately. They say it’s as if it were a different variety. It has plenty of notes of blueberries, blackberries and red fruits as well as an herbaceous aroma of a serious Bordeaux, with cedar wood and black pepper. This is a gentleman of a wine, very sensorial, and shaped by fine tannins. Drink 2014-2021.
