Readers of these pages are keenly aware of my decades-long relationship with Bodegas Lopez de Heredia. My most recent trip to Haro, in the northwest of La Rioja was mesmerizing; unforgettable ancient buildings adjacent to a stunning display of modern architecture designed by Zaha Hadid; a pavilion standing as a philosophy of integration that must be witnessed to be believed. Since 1877, the Lopez de Heredia family has done one thing with fanatical zeal: produce authentic Rioja that lasts, mythically long-lived and released after decades, only when wine and winemaker determine the perfect moment. This dedication and zeal cannot be overstated; there are no other producers quite like them. Crianza selections released with years of age, Reserva bottlings held for a dozen years, Gran Reservas resting for what must seem like an eternity for their fans. Cubillo is Heredia's late release Crianza where in great vintages (2010) affords a serious bargain that captures the essence of great Rioja.
