2010 Domaine Pegau Cuvee da Capo (1.5L)

Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

Comprised of roughly 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah and other permitted varieties, aged all in foudre, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is sheer perfection in a glass. Wine doesn’t get any better. Incredibly rich and concentrated, yet ethereal and even graceful, it boasts off-the-hook aromas of blackberry, licorice, spice-box, smoked meats and underbrush that continue to change and develop in the glass. Massive and decadent on the palate, yet again, with no weight and a seamless texture, this brilliant effort needs a handful of years in the cellar and will live to see its 30th birthday in fine form. Drink 2016-2040.

100 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Issue # 209 - Oct 2013)

Still in foudre, the 2010 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo is monumental stuff and I think possibly the greatest Cuvée da Capo produced to date. Showing off the chart levels of concentration and richness, with jaw-dropping aromatics of roasted meats, spice, licorice, liquid mineral, and incredibly pure blackberry and assorted dark fruits, it hits the palate with a gorgeously pure, full-bodied, and powerful texture that just keeps on giving. Nothing is out of place, the fruit is perfectly ripe, and it has thrilling purity and depth. The amount of tannin here would give me pause if it was not for all of the depth and richness through the middle. This legend in the making will need a full decade or more of cellaring, yet will age and drink well for 2 decades or more after that. If you can afford it, do not miss it.

98-100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Issue # 13 - Sep 2012)

Heady and loaded, but defined, with stunning depth and intensity to the pastis-soaked plum, blackberry and cherry fruit flavors, lined with brick dust, baker’s chocolate, espresso and smoldering tobacco. Long and tarry through the finish, but lush and alluring at the same time. A backdrop of chestnut and cedar adds even more range and character. A huge wine with amazing balance. Best from 2015 through 2035. From France.

Chateaneuf-du-Pape fanatics know a vintage is exceptional when Domaine Pegau makes a Cuvee da Capo (only five have been made). 2009 did not make the grade but 2010 will yield the glorious Capo a wine that has received 100 pts from Robert Parker on every effort -- 2010 scoring 98-100 on the first swirl. Pegau's Réservée is a banquet of old-vine grenache, loaded with roasted meats, plums, black cherries, figs and spices, wrapped with a warm texture of perfectly woven tannins and acidity. Capo is epic, a feast in Valhalla, dripping with cherry liqueur and dark chocolates. Precious and rare. The vintage was in the tanks when Team B-21 stopped early in 2011 and tasted with Laurence Feraud. The proud guardian of Pegau knew 2010 was special, better than 2009. She took us into the small cellars, the studio of a master jeweler disguised as a garage, and climbed on and around the tanks plucking samples. Feraud was deciding whether 2010 would include Capo. She chose wisely and made a stunning Réservée and, from her oldest vines in La Crau that spent 18 months in big oak tanks, a stupendous Capo. We are happy to offer you both of these treasures.
