I recently enjoyed hooking up with a long-time friend and professional contact when I met up with the export director of a leading negociant firm for dinner in San Fran at Raj Parr's RN74. Little did I know that this absolutely killer meal would allow us the requisite couple of hours to properly enjoy one of my most treasured wines of the 21st century: the 2010 Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge. I thought out loud, throughout the course of the dinner, how amazing this wine was performing – even better than all those samplings during en primeur a few years back. I wondered how many of you had enjoyed this beauty, recently. I know a lot of folks – Parker, too – consider the 2009 to be the greatest bottling of the modern era for SHL. And don't get me wrong, it's the bee's knees. But have you tasted the 2010 lately? The Cathiard family continues to believe that their '10 outshines the '09. Could it be the sorting? Did you know that they perfected their Oenoview satellite imagery system for the 2010 harvest? It was functioning for the '09, but they say it really assisted in pinpointing the perfect parcels for the 2010. When did it all become so technical? Whatever it is, we're all the lucky beneficiaries of one final shot – Ex-Chateau, perfect provenance – of this near perfect vinous treasure.

This is an extraordinary performance once again from the Cathiard family, the proprietors of Smith-Haut-Lafitte. They think the 2010 is even better than the 2009. (I disagree, but only slightly.) This wine has laser-like definition in its an remarkable nose of a subtle charcoal fire interwoven with spring flowers, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur and spicy wood. Full-bodied, stunningly concentrated, long, rich and moderately tannic, this wine is set for an exceptionally long life of 30-40 years but can be drunk in 5-7.

98+ points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Issue # 205 - Feb 2013)

Gorgeous, with alluring black tea and warm ganache notes that unfurl slowly, while the core of intense steeped plum, anise, blackberry compote and black currant confiture sits patiently in reserve. The beautiful loam-, tobacco- and tar-filled finish displays major heft, but also remarkable polish and grace. Should age very slowly. Best from 2018 through 2035.

96 points, Wine Spectator (Mar 2013)

A beautifully ripe wine with great black fruits that burst through the classic tannins. In its richness and in its structure, it combines the best of the vintage. Dark, complex, fruity and very rich, a magnificent wine for long-term aging.
