My friends and colleagues, knowing that I manage the Bordeaux buying (among other things) as part of my daily routine, often send me email requests for suggestions on affordable wines from Bordeaux. Funny thing is, the bulk of these requests are written to imply that affordable and Bordeaux are not synonymous; my friends in particular will write: "affordable" Bordeaux. So I've spent the past few weeks working with our best negociants while sharpening my pencil on current stocks. My aim: compile a nice collection of well-priced, 90+ point Bordeaux from top vintages that you can afford to drink on a Tuesday night. And remember: "value" California Cabernet generally falls in the $25 to $50 price range. Yes, that statement opens us up for hours of debate, but for every decent California Cabernet I've tasted, which was priced below $25, I've tasted dozens upon dozens that were simply overworked, commercial plonk in that range as well. Feeling fairly confident that we've all had at least one of those experiences, it's safe to say that finding 90+ rated Bordeaux, from superlative vintages (2005, 2009, 2010, etc.) for less than $40 should be a real treat... especially for Bordeaux fans who may have thought it impossible.

A powerful example of modern Bordeaux with its blackberry-packed flavors, ripe tannins and dark, solid, concentrated fruit. Spice, wood aromas and pepper complete this dense wine.

Joanin-Bécot is one of the most reliable and consistently excellent wines from the Côtes de Castillon, and all the credit has to go to the inspired work of Juliette Bécot. The gorgeous 2005 is just now coming into its plateau of maturity, where it should easily stay for a decade or more. With super-ripe black cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant fruit interwoven with incense, licorice and a touches of espresso roast and spice, this full-bodied, opulent, lusciously constructed wine is a beauty of purity and symmetry as well as depth and texture. Drink it over the next decade or more. It is a sleeper of the vintage.

90 points, (Issue # 219 - Jun 2015)

Good red-ruby. Jammy blueberry, espresso, licorice, mocha, menthol and nutty oak on the nose. Fat, rich, deep and sweet but with nicely integrated acidity giving the wine shape and firmness. Unusually powerful for this Cotes de Castillon wine, which really coats the palate on the aftertaste. Has a firm acid/tannin spine for slow evolution in bottle.
