A special selection of library releases from top Rioja vintages, these highly rated Roda I Reservas offer succulent lush, black fruit layered with velvety tannins built for longevity, each bottle crated in an individual original wooden case, cellared in pristine conditions at the Bodegas and ready to enjoy over the next decades, at pricing not to be missed by fans and collectors of powerful age-worthy Spanish wines.

Located at Haro’s legendary Barrio de la Estacion among Riojas oldest and most celebrated wineries, relative newcomer Bodegas Roda was founded in 1987 to craft cellar worthy Rioja exclusively from old vine fruit, its modern state of the art facilities in stark contrast to nearby Lopez de Heredia’s historic cobwebbed cellars. Sourced from 160 hectares in and around Haro with about half estate owned, the vineyards are mainly planted with Tempranillo and smaller amounts of Graciano and Garnacha, with low-yielding bush vines averaging over 50 years of age planted on limestone soils at altitudes from 380 to 650 meters above sea level and most without irrigation. Released as a Reserva requiring at least three years in barrel and bottle, the dark-fruited Roda I was fermented in oak with indigenous yeasts then aged up to 16 months in a mix of new and used French oak barriques, with an additional 2 plus years in the bottle, crafted of mostly Tempranillo but blended with a little Graciano in warmer vintages to add freshness. Boasting an “impressively long and assertive finish” according to Josh Raynolds of Vinous, the 94 pt. 2004 Roda I offers “superior depth and concentration” balanced with fine acidity, while the 98 pt. 2005 Roda I is described by the Wine Advocate’s Jay Miller as powerful yet still “light on its feet,” its depth of flavors and enduring finish making it “one of the best ever” according to James Suckling. Delivering “a suave blend of richness and finesse” according to Vinous critic Raynolds, the 95 pt. 2010 Roda I offers remarkable “depth and beauty” according to James Suckling, who calls the 98 pt. 2011 Roda I “a glorious wine,” earning a spot on Decanter’s list of top wines in 2018 and called one of its “most exciting picks.”

A unique opportunity for collectors and fans of powerfully built Rioja to acquire top rated library releases of Bodegas Roda, these highly rated Roda I Reservas embody “the essence of fine-tuned classicism” according to Decanter’s Sarah Evans, all impeccably balanced Riojas that will continue to evolve for over another decade, rarely available on the market and offered at exceptional pricing that makes them hard to resist.

As we didn't have another recent vintage to compare with the 2010 and the expectations were so high, Roda's CEO Agustín Santolaya insisted on uncorking another excellent vintage, the 2004 Roda I, to check on its evolution. The production and source of the grapes was basically the same as today, 100% Tempranillo that, back then, was fermented in French oak vats with indigenous yeasts, followed by aging in barriques for 16 months. There might be some things in common with 2010, which is the current vintage—a very balanced year with great ripeness and acidity, wines with power and elegance and a very slow development. This 2004 is aging at a glacial pace and should have a long life ahead of it. At the time, they produced 184,447 bottles of this 2004. It has been in bottle since May 2006.

Glass-staining ruby. Strikingly pungent aromas of red berry preserves, smoky minerals and fresh herbs. Pure, sweet red and dark berry flavors are firmed by fine-grained tannins and gain a richer mocha quality with aeration. The impressively long and assertive finish echoes the dark berry note and leaves a zesty mineral quality behind. I find this wine more energetic than many 2004s, which are typically on the richer side.
