I began using B21 about 2 years ago. Wish I had found them sooner. They represent about 70% to 80 % of my liquor buys. Only the odd things are purchased elsewhere. Once you use them you will be hooked. Inventory, professional staff, quick shipping and competative pricing are what I really appreciate. Try them, you have nothing to lose and much to gain.

Here's an exciting opportunity to enjoy a vertical of outstanding new releases from Chateau Troplong Mondot, three incredibly promising vintages garnering multiple 100 pt. scores and wowing critics across the board, each built for three decades of pleasurable drinking and unbeatably priced to over deliver value.

Perched in a spectacular location with a 360-degree view overlooking St. Emilion, Chateau Troplong Mondot is marked by the prominent water tower at St. Emilion's highest point, its stunning new cellars viewed from above on a glass catwalk reflecting the estate's dramatic transformation since its purchase by insurance company SCOR in 2017. Immediately hiring Bordeaux veteran Aymeric de Gironde, formerly of Pichon Baron and Cos d'Estournel, to lead the estate, Troplong Mondot pivoted to a classical, terroir-driven style, identifying the unique qualities of even the smallest parcels of its organically farmed 65 hectares of vineyards and reducing the amount of new oak to allow their rich minerality to shine through, described by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson as reflecting "a more evident respect for the powerful terroir that does not need to be overly dressed up" under the guidance of renowned consulting enologist Thomas Duclos. Vinified in vats instead of barrels to preserve freshness, the 98 pt. 2018 Chateau Troplong Mondot is "simply breathtaking" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, aged in 60% new oak with a small percentage in large vats and amphorae to yield a Troplong with "brighter red fruit flavors" that's "backed by a distinct flinty minerality" according to the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth. Earning the #13 spot of the Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Cellar Selections 2022, the "perfect" 100 pt. 2019 Chateau Troplong Mondot is "impressive" according to Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson, with chalky limestone tannins that "speaks of its soils," boasting "a satisfying overall mouthful and lasting impression" according to Decanter's Georgina Hindle who sums it up as "incredible." Declared "one of the Right Bank's finest wines in this vintage" by the Wine Advocate's William Kelley with another perfect score – the "fabulous" 100 pt. 2020 Chateau Troplong Mondot is "wonderfully exuberant right out of the gate" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, with aromatic, rich dark fruit described as "powerful and dense" by the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss that "ends with a whoosh of freshness and lift" according to Jane Anson.

Describing these recent vintages as marking "the upward trajectory and unveiling of the new expression of this very special site at Troplong Mondot," the Wine Advocate's William Kelley declared, "what an exhilarating ride this is!" while Jeb Dunnuck unequivocally declares "there is no denying the incredible quality from this chateau today" – these value priced Chateau Troplong Mondot selections offering an exciting opportunity for Bordeaux fans and collectors to mix a case or pick a few favorites and jump aboard St. Emilion's rising star for the thrilling journey ahead.

The magnificent Merlot in the blend has pushed up the alcohol, while also giving a velvet touch and power to the wine. This estate is now on top form, producing this generously ripe, black plum flavored wine. It is lifted by acidity while powering the wine's intensity. Drink from 2026.

100 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Oct 2022)

Such a seductive soft perfume to the nose, delicate yet generous aromatics of cherry and rose. The palate is juicy and fresh, charming yet energetic with such crystalline purity and balance. Tannins are smooth but softly textured giving nuance to the flavours where refreshing high toned ripe red and black cherry fruit play alongside mint, dark chocolate and graphite. Clearly powerfully but carefully controlled from start to finish giving such a satisfying overall mouthful and lasting impression. Incredible.

99 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2022)

Has any Bordeaux château realized a more wholesale stylistic revolution in so short a time than Troplong Mondot? Since Aymeric de Gironde arrived at the estate in late 2017, the ultra powerful "shock and awe" style of the 2000s is out, and a new refinement is in. Of course, the deep clays that define the core vineyards around the château itself are never likely to produce light or ephemeral wines, but de Gironde has astutely understood that (to develop an analogy), when driving down hill, one can ease off on the accelerator. The 2019 Troplong Mondot is a ringing endorsement of the new direction, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of wild berries, violets, coniferous forest floor, licorice, raw cocoa and subtle spices, followed by a full-bodied, velvety and layered palate that's seamless and perfumed, its enveloping core of succulent fruit framed by rich, powdery tannins and lively acids. Harmonious and penetrating, I never thought I'd taste a wine like this from Troplong Mondot.

98 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The purity of fruit is pretty phenomenal here with blackcurrants, cherries and crushed-stone undertones. Floral notes of roses and violets, too. Full-bodied, yet this is a linear style with super fine tannins and great length and beauty. You really want to drink it. It grows on the palate and shows real power, with breadth and depth. Remains fresh throughout. Really something. Try after 2026.

2018 Haut Brisson (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

94JS 93JD

Aromas of blueberry and chocolate with some walnut and blackberry, following through to a medium-bodied palate with a solid core of fruit, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Nice cedar and sandalwood undertones. Refined and polished. Try after 2024.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

Based on 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château Haut Brisson is a pretty, floral wine delivering crunchy red and blue fruits, lots of spring flower and damp earth aromatics, medium to full-bodied richness, and present, firm, yet ripe and polished tannins. It's beautifully done, with an exotic, age-worthy vibe, it's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades.

2019 Chateau Rol Valentin (750ml)

As no-brainer opportunities go, this one is right up there with the best of them. We were recently offered a parcel of a rising-star, Right Bank hidden gem at such an amazing deal that we're bringing it to our private clients at the best price anywhere in the world.

Rol Valentin in St-Emilion has a long history, but it didn't quite capture the attention of Bordeaux critics and fans until late 1990s under previous owner Eric Prissette. Now under the ownership of Nicolas and Alexandra Robin since 2009, the estate has hit its stride with consistent results that get better each year. With two plots of vines, one on the limestone plateau and one in the sandy clay soils near the village of St-Emilion itself, the property can make the best of both terroirs to achieve exceptional balance and finesse in the finished wines. The 2019 showcases "a gorgeous, pure bouquet ... intense but not overpowering." Likewise, the palate is "beautifully balanced" according to Jeb Dunnuck, making for a readily approachable profile that also has the goods to cruise in the cellar. It's a sharp buy for savvy collectors yet it's also an easily accessible choice for Bordeaux novices looking for top-class quality without breaking the bank.

94V 92JD 92JS

The 2019 Rol Valentin has turned out beautifully. Rich, ample and creamy, the 2019 is utterly beguiling from the first taste. Crushed raspberry, mint, spice, blood orange and mocha all build in the glass as this creamy, succulent Saint-Émilion shows off its curves and overall allure. The 2019 is even more impressive from bottle than it was from barrel.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

This estate continues to make outstanding wines, and their 2019 Château Rol Valentin sports a deep ruby/plum color to go with beautiful notes of red plums, darker cherries, Asian spices, graphite, and dried herbs. Medium-bodied on the palate, it's beautifully balanced, has good mid-palate density, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Beautifully done, it should have 15+ years of prime drinking.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

This has aromas of blackberries, toasted bark, pine cones and spice box. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Some citrus peel on the structured and chewy finish. Better after 2024.

"The 2020 Moulin du Cadet marries intensity with energy, a combination that works so well ... This is very nicely done. In a word: terrific." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

We love Bordeaux for several reasons, but chief among them is the incredible value that the region turns out, year after year. Sure, the iconic châteaux and collector's trophies often fetch prices that defy the laws of gravity, but there's so much great wine in Bordeaux at such fair prices that it's almost daunting to try to dig into it. That's why we do it for you.

Our latest find is the sensationally overperforming 2020 Moulin du Cadet St-Émilion, a remarkable wine of "terrific purity" with a "gorgeous perfume" as Jeb Dunnuck notes in his review of 94+ points. He's not the only, as James Suckling, Antonio Galloni, and Neal Martin have all chimed in with glowing compliments. Sourced from a small parcel on the upper part of the St-Émilion plateau, the 2020 is a classic example of the ideal balance that Merlot can achieve on the right limestone terroir. "Hedonistic yet without compromising delineation or terroir definition," it's a quintessential Right Bank beauty in every sense, from a vintage that really brings out the best in this small, under-the-radar property.

94JD 94V 94JS 93WI

All Merlot from a tiny parcel on the upper plateau, the 2020 Château Moulin Du Cadet has a fresher, elegant, yet nicely concentrated and medium-bodied profile as well as a gorgeous perfume of red and black raspberries, tobacco, peppery herbs, and truffle. Perfectly balanced, with fine yet building tannins and terrific purity, it needs just 2-4 years of bottle age and will evolve for 15+.

94+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Moulin du Cadet marries intensity with energy, a combination that works so well. Bright red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and blood orange are all finely delineated. Vibrant acids and clean mineral notes give the 2020 its vibrant, saline personality. This is very nicely done. In a word: terrific.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Notes of cassis and plum skins with licorice, cocoa and mocha. Hints of walnut, too. Medium- to full-bodied with tight yet polished tannins that last for minutes. Delicious and juicy velvet-coated dark fruit with tension and length. Toned and lingering finish with lots of energy to it. Try after 2026.

94 points, James Suckling (Dec 2022)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Moulin du Cadet is redolent of juicy black cherries, mulberries, and boysenberry preserves with an earthy undercurrent and nuances of star anise and wood smoke. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with black fruit preserves, lifted by a lively backbone, finishing long and plush.

This is a very linear red and layered at the same time, showing blackberry, blueberry, black-truffle, bark and stone character. Chalk and minerality, too. It’s full-bodied and well framed with gorgeous intensity and freshness. Muscular with wonderful structure and brightness. Salty and savory notes on the finish. Try after 2024.

98 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Troplong Mondot will take readers who haven't tasted these wines in a few years aback. Stunning in its aromatic presence, the 2018 is silky, medium-in body and super-refined. Once again, I am blown away by the wine's total sense of precision. The Cabernets are only 15% of the blend, and yet the 2018 is so strongly marked by floral and savory accents. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, rose petal and lavender all build in the glass. The 2018 is regal, refined and absolutely exquisite.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Troplong Mondot is blended of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, with 15% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple colored, with considerable coaxing and swirling it slowly emerges from the glass like a waking giant, building to a towering bouquet of preserved plums, blueberry pie and Morello cherries with gentler wafts of violets, star anise, fruitcake and cast-iron pan. The concentrated, full-bodied palate possesses impressive purity and brightness of fruit commingled with richer, riper elements and supported by firm, velvety tannins, finishing with lovely freshness and on a lingering ferrous note. It's a wine that's not just delicious, it's seriously interesting too.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Château Troplong Mondot showed beautifully. Based on 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, it reveals a dense purple color as well as ripe beautiful aromatics of black cherries, red plums, graphite, espresso, Asian spices, and gravelly earth. Beautiful on the palate as well, it's medium to full-bodied and has a rounded, expansive texture, plenty of mid-palate depth, building tannins, and present yet integrated oak. This classic, impressive Troplong Mondot will need 5-7 years of bottle age but will evolve for 30 years or more.

2018 Chateau Barde-Haut (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

95JD 94V 94WS 94JS 93WA

Showing brilliantly, the 2018 Château Barde-Haut comes from a beautiful, cooler terroir on the eastern side of Saint-Emilion. It has a wonderful sense of purity and elegance as well as ripe black cherry and blueberry fruits to go with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of chocolate, spring flowers, violets, and a kiss of chalky minerality. It's beautifully balanced and has ultra-fine tannins as well as a gorgeous finish. It reminds me of the 2016, with maybe a touch more up-front charm. Give it 4-5 years if you can (it's drinking beautifully today as well) and it's going to evolve for 20-25 years or more.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Barde-Haut is a powerful wine, but it is also rather closed. That won't be an issue in time; the 2018 needs quite a bit of air to show all of the rich, layered fruit readers have come to expect from this Saint-Émilion. Succulent dark cherry, chocolate, new leather, espresso and sweet spice build into the rich, layered finish.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Alluring, with a very focused set of cassis, plum reduction and cherry preserve flavors coursing through atop a well-imbedded graphite spine, all while black tea, chalky minerality and subtle herb nuances play out through a long finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2022 through 2035. 6,650 cases made.

94 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

Currants, rose hips, dried lavender, cocoa powder and cloves on the nose. It’s full-bodied with sleek, tight tannins. Refined and elegant with tight, polished layers. Solid center palate. Try from 2025.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Barde-Haut is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it takes a little swirling to unlock the beautifully expressive notes of warm black plums, wild blueberries and black raspberries, plus hints of roses, underbrush, ground cloves and fertile loam. The full-bodied palate delivers a lively backbone and wonderfully ripe, satiny tannins supporting the generous black and red fruits, finishing long and fragrant.

2020 Chateau La Gaffeliere (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

Declared "an estate to watch" by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson, the rich and vibrant 96+ pt. 2019 Chateau La Gaffeliere and 98 pt. 2020 Chateau La Gaffeliere boast fresh aromatic fruit with refined minerality and ripe, silky tannins promising to mature gracefully over the next few decades, sourced from two outstanding vintages that "deliver the goods" according to Neal Martin of Vinous and affordably priced for stocking the cellar.

Owned by the Malet-Roquefort family for three centuries, Chateau La Gaffeliere has undergone a complete renovation including extensive replanting of its vineyards since 2004 under the direction of legendary consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, its steady rise in quality over the last decade described as a "sleeping giant" awakening by the Wine Advocate's William Kelley. Boasting an exceptional terroir known as the golden triangle between the hills of Chateaux Pavie and Ausone, the Grand Vin of La Gaffeliere is sourced from the estate's classified 22 hectares of the 38 hectare vineyard planted to 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, the vineyard team employing rigorous selection with at least a third of the hand harvested grapes not making the cut for the Grand Vin. A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc aged in 60% new French oak for 18 months, the elegant 96+ pt. 2019 Chateau La Gaffeliere is "a stunning, riveting wine in every way" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous with a rich core of vibrant fruit and layers of silky tannins described as "worth cellaring for sure" by the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth, earning a spot on the Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2022. Named one of the Wine Independent's Top 50 Value Wines of 2023 and earning a spot on James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of France 2023, the 98 pt. 2020 Chateau La Gaffeliere is called "sleek, silky and excellent quality" by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson and declared "a thrilling Saint-Emilion readers should snatch up" by Jeb Dunnuck, promising "great things as it develops" over the next decades according to the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss.

Described as "striking an expert balance between power and finesse" by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson, the impressive 96+ pt. 2019 Chateau La Gaffeliere and 98 pt. 2020 Chateau La Gaffeliere are expertly crafted to express their exceptional terroir, this offer a welcome opportunity for Bordeaux lovers seeking outstanding value to acquire two age worthy Right Bank blends that seriously overdeliver.

98V 98WI 97JS 96WE

The 2020 La Gaffelière is superb. Rich, dense and explosive. Black cherry, gravel, licorice, grilled herbs and menthol race out of the glass. Deep, pliant and explosive, the 2020 is magnificent. At this stage, the 2020 is an infant, but that won't be a problem in a few years. This vivid, statuesque Saint-Émilion is nothing short of thrilling.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

The 2020 La Gaffeliere is composed of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it soars out of the glass with expressive notes of redcurrant jelly, plum preserves, and kirsch, plus nuances of dark chocolate, violets, pencil lead, and fragrant soil with a waft of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is so tightly wound, featuring very fine layers of red and black fruit intertwined with floral and mineral nuances, supported by highly pixilated, super-ripe tannins and amazing tension, finishing very long and with the energy of an atomic bomb. This is stunning!

98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Jun 2023)

Deep and intense notes of plums and blackberries with dark chocolate, toasted spices, walnut, crushed graphite and wet stones. Full-bodied with layers of ripe, velvety tannins that flow in a firm stream throughout the palate. Very structured. Delicious chocolate-wrapped black and blue fruit with spiced character and a really long finish. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc. Drink from 2028.

97 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

This wine's ripe tannins and fine perfumes come from the 40% Cabernet Franc in the blend. The structure is powerful even if masked by the generous black fruits. The wine has great potential. Drink from 2027.

"Acknowledging that 2019 is already a heralded vintage, the salient question is whether it represents the summit of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 triumvirate. 'Yes' is the answer. I have always felt that is the case." - Neal Martin, Vinous

Of course, you may or may not agree with Martin in terms of 2019 place in the "trifecta," but it's undeniable that is a truly spectacular Bordeaux vintage that has more than lived up to its day-one hype since the wine's have hit the market, hit collector's cellars, and found their way into the glasses of impatient enthusiasts. Best of all, pricing has always been highly favorable compared to 2018 and 2020 (to say nothing of 2022), so the 2019s have also been some of the sharpest collectible buys on the market from the get-go and remain so today.

A beautiful, elegant Saint-Emilion that will be loved by both modernists and traditionalists out there, the 2019 Château Bellefont-Belcier comes from a south-facing, limestone terroir just beside Château Pavie and Larcis Ducasse. A blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, it starts out reticent and understated yet builds beautifully with time in the glass and has wonderful cassis and black raspberry fruits intermixed with notes of truffle, tobacco, damp earth, and violets. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has silky tannins, perfect overall balance, and a great finish. It's not a powerhouse, but it shines for its purity, finesse, and elegance. Drink bottles over the coming 15-20 years or so.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

Very attractive plum and cherry aromas with hints of flowers and wet earth, following through to a medium to full body with linear, polished tannins and a juicy finish. Juicy fruit to finish with some minerality and forest-flower undertones. A little tight, but very pure at the end. Drink after 2025.

95 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

From a beautifully situated hillside vineyard, sandwiched between Larcis Ducasse and Tertre Roteboeuf on either side, with holdings belonging to Pavie and Troplong Mondot on the plateau above, the 2019 Bellefont Belcier has turned out very well indeed. Offering up aromas of smoky berry fruit, loamy soil, subtle spices, black truffle and violets, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with a vibrant, enveloping profile and a long, penetrating finish. This is a terrific effort, though given the thoughtful farming and program of replanting that is underway at this long-neglected estate, I suspect it only hints at what is to come as Jean-Christophe Meyrou and his team get to work.

94 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Bellefont-Belcier is a wine of tremendous reserve. The 35% Cabernet Franc comes through in the wine's aromatic profile and overall feel. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2019 needs time to come together. It is a seriously impressive wine with tons of character. I have long admired Bellefont-Belcier for its potential. In the past, the tannins were simply overpowering, if the 2019 is any indication, that might be less of an issue going forward.

The 2018 La Gaffelière is hands down one of the wines of the vintage. Towering in its stature and vertical lift, the 2018 dazzles right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and leather all run through this deep, wonderfully pliant Saint-Émilion. The 2018 is rich, deep and beautifully resonant, with tremendous depth and tons of stature that builds, all framed by beams of supporting minerality that confer vibrancy. La Gaffelière is distinctive, alluring and arresting right out of the gate. It is another magnificent showing from this reborn estate. The blend is 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Franc. Magnifique!

99 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 La Gaffeliere is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to offer peeks at notions of stewed red and black plums, mulberries and Morello cherries, plus hints of damp earth, tar and bouquet garni. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is tightly wound, delivering crunchy red and black fruits with an approachable texture of fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long with a lifted perfume. This is a refreshing, beautifully perfumed and skillfully crafted expression of the vintage. Give it 4-5 years in bottle and then enjoy it over the next 20 years+.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

This estate is on a roll. Replete with powerful tannins and dense black fruits, this latest release continues the succession of fine vintages. Perfumed, ripe with berry flavors and, more importantly, with rich tannins, the wine will age impressively. Drink from 2027.

Another sleeper of the vintage, this wine possesses exuberant black cherry liqueur notes intermixed with blacker fruits, some lead pencil shavings, incense and plum sauce in an attractive, fat, fleshy style that exhibits low acidity and oodles of fruit. Drink it over the next decade.

Produced with the same meticulous attention to detail as their iconic Grand Vin from Chateau Leoville Las Cases, the Delon family's 94 pt. Chateau Potensac is "showing beautifully" according to Jeb Dunnuck, calling it a "pure, elegant Medoc that's well worth seeking out" and declaring it a "wine to buy in multiples or a case." Vinous critic Antonio Galloni describes the 95 pt. 2019 Moulin du Cadet from St. Emilion as "pure, silky and impeccable in its balance," while the 96 pt. 2019 Tour Saint-Christophe is "a broad powerful wine" that's "one of the greatest values in Bordeaux," offering "plenty to look forward to." Described as "lush and structured" by the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth, James Suckling calls the 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Sansonnet from St. Emilion "creamy and polished" while Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson notes its "lovely sense of freshness," summing it up as "good stuff." Crafted as Chateau Valandraud's second wine by St. Emilion's legendary Jean-Luc Thunevin, the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss describes the 95 pt. 2019 Virginie de Valandraud, as "seriously structured," and Decanter's Georgina Hindle calls it "rich and concentrated" with "lots to like." Described as "off the charts gorgeous" and "positively stunning" by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, the 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Clos de Sarpe St Emilion is "a beautifully seamless, perfumed and authoritative wine" according to the Wine Advocate's William Kelley, ranking as "the finest Clos de Sarpe of the modern era." And finally for fans of Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Left Bank blends, a pair of 97 pt. beauties - the stunning 2019 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge from Pessac Leognan is "unquestionably up with the crème de la creme of the vintage" according to Jeb Dunnuck, a "magical wine in the making" that the Wine Advocate's William Kelley deems "worth a special effort to seek out," and the elegantly seductive 2019 Chateau Durfort-Vivens is "a brilliant Margaux" of "immense nobility" according to critic Kelley, who describes it as "full-bodied, deep and concentrated" with "a long and penetrating finish."

From a "superb vintage" producing "finessed wines built on persistence and length" according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, these top rated 2019 selections are a treasure trove of fantastic values delivering exceptional quality and longevity, all solid choices for the cellar to enjoy over the next decade and beyond.

96JD 95V 94JS

Another beautiful wine from the Lefévère family that does everything right, the 2019 Château Sansonnet has a textbook Saint-Emilion bouquet of chalky minerality, ripe red and black fruits, notes of truffle and flowers, medium to full body, and beautiful overall balance. In the past, this wine has had a glossy, slightly modern style (in a good sense), but the 2019 has an incredibly classic feel with its oak nicely integrated and just a liquid rock-like minerality on the finish. It's a gorgeous wine that will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for over two decades.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Sansonnet offers a striking combination of fruit intensity and structure. There is plenty of the intense, inky fruit that readers have come to expect in recent years, but that opulence is beautifully balanced by the wine's energy and overall drive. Blackberry jam, spice, leather, tobacco, menthol, cedar and chocolate build as the 2019 shows off its alluring personality. Tasted two times.

95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Ripe blackberries, cherries, praline, walnuts and lavender on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine, plush tannins. Creamy and polished. Drink after 2024.

2020 Grand Mayne (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

94JD 94V 94WI 94D 93JA

I loved the 2020 Château Grand Mayne. This medium to full-bodied, concentrated, incredibly satisfying Saint-Emilion offers up ample mulled red and black fruits, some loamy earth, iron, and dried flower nuances, ripe tannins, and plenty of mid-palate depth. I still think the 2015 is the top vintage, but this is clearly in the same league as the 2015, 2018, and 2019, and it's going to drink brilliantly over the coming 15-20 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Grand Mayne has a very enticing, pure bouquet that unfolds wonderfully in the glass, with ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, orange pith and subtle tobacco scents. Well-defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with an impressive backbone. There's a soupçon of creaminess in the second half with a precise, lightly spiced and persistent finish that leaves you wanting more. There's no excuse not to have a few bottles tucked away in your cellar.

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Grand Mayne is a blend of 73% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with cedary wafts over a core of stewed black plums, boysenberry preserves, and Chinese five spice, plus a hint of unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a solid backbone of chewy, oak-inspired tannins with a great core of black fruits and savory layers, finishing a little woody at this youthful stage. It needs time!

94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

Punchy and vibrant, this has such style to it straight away, clean and crystalline, a smooth core with just grainy tannins giving the weight and width. Extremely complete, a little spiced right now, with some angles overall, but lovely vibrant and concentrated blackcurrant and plum fruit with medicinal minty, wet stone, pencil lead aspects and lovely floral touches. Nice drive and presentation from an estate I love in St-Emilion. A dark, brooding style but clean, forward and linear.

94 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2023)

Damson, vibrant black cherry, cassis puree, cocoa bean and liqourice. This is concentrated, with shoulders to the tannins, and an appealing purity of fruit delivery. 15ha, Michel Rolland consltant, owned by Jean-Antoine Nony, now joined by his brother Damien. 41hl/ha yield, 50% new oak for ageing.

2016 Chateau Pavie (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
6

100WA 100JS 99JD 98V 98JA

The 2016 Pavie a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Very deep purple-black in color, it needs a little coaxing to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal a fragrant perfume of violets, chocolate-covered cherries, crushed blueberries and eucalyptus over a core of preserved plums, kirsch, black raspberries and crème de cassis plus hints of licorice and chargrilled meat. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, it has a solid foundation of firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness interknit with the black fruit preserves and minerally layers, finishing very long and very decadent. Superb!

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2019)

Spectacular aromas of crushed berries, such as blueberries and raspberries. Fresh flowers with hints of sandalwood. Exotic. Saturated palate of so much fruit, yet remains agile and energetic. Great length and texture. Fills your mouth. This needs time, but a classic. Twin brother of the perfect 2015.

100 points, James Suckling (Mar 2020)

Turning the dial up considerably, the 2016 Château Pavie leaps out of the glass with a thrilling bouquet of crème de cassis, toasty oak, graphite, white truffle, crayons, and flowers. A blend of 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 85% new French oak (the new oak has been dialed back in recent vintages), this full-bodied Pavie is made in a more elegant, seamless style compared to prior great vintages, yet it still has brilliant depth of fruit and concentration, ripe, present tannins, a seamless texture, and an awesome finish.

99 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Pavie, matured in 80% new oak, has a thrilling bouquet of layers of small black cherries, boysenberry, fig and a hint of licorice, all very well defined; the oak is nicely integrated. The medium-bodied palate offers ripe, sappy black fruit, grippy tannin, a smooth texture and crisp acidity toward the finish. This is a seamless Pavie, but backward compared to its peers, and it needs several years in bottle before it even entertains the prospect of drinking pleasure.

98 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jan 2019)

A perfect example of coiled sinewy tannins, a fist of steel wrapped in velvet. This is so juicy yet so reserved, fully walking the tightrope of light and shade. Meticulous layers of butterscotch, cigar, turmeric, dill, mandarin peel, with sculpted clarity to the cooly-reserved blackcurrant and bilberry fruits, extremely complex and clearly determined to be around for many decades. Part of the oustanding vintages series within this vertical - and where you could just about drink the 2017 today, I would strongly suggest not doing so with the 2016. 60% new oak.

97JD 96WI 96V 96JS 95WA 95D

The finest wine I've tasted from this estate, the 2019 Château La Gaffelière is pure Saint-Emilion brilliance and offers a complex, intense bouquet of red and black fruits, iron, truffly earth, tobacco, and bouquet garni. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, pure, layered, elegant, yet concentrated 2019 with perfect tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a gorgeous finish. It shows the perfumed, elegant, already accessible style of this great vintage (and I thoroughly enjoyed this bottle), but it's going to evolve gracefully over the coming 30 years or more. Bravo!

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2023)

The 2019 La Gaffeliere is composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it spills from the glass with alluring notions of black raspberries, boysenberry preserves, Morello cherries, and roses, plus suggestions of Ceylon tea, dried mint, and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly crafted and refreshing, bursting with bright, lively fruit, finishing long and achingly floral. This is an effortlessly gorgeous Saint-Emilion, not to be missed.

96+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2022)

The 2019 La Gaffelière is just as impressive as it was en primeur. Bright and tightly wound, La Gaffelière sizzles with energy. Dark red fruit, mocha, blood orange, mint and dried flowers lend striking aromatic presence. There is some youthful austerity here, but nothing time in bottle won't take care of. The 2019 doesn't quite match the stratospheric grandeur of the magical 2018, but it comes close.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

A vibrant, fragrant red with aromas of blackberries, currants, walnuts and mint chocolate. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Pretty walnut notes on the polished finish. Fantastic length. Driven acidity and focus. Try in 2025.

96 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 La Gaffelière wafts from the glass with a rich bouquet of blackberries and cherries mingled with subtle hints of burning embers and loamy soil that's framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, it's a concentrated, vibrant wine built around bright acids and fine, powdery tannins. Its vivid fruit tones and classical balance make this Cabernet Franc-rich blend a promising candidate for sustained bottle age. Anyone who has tasted the great wines this estate produced in the 1950s and 1960s knows how great this site can be; and with stricter selection as well as the elimination of fruit from vines growing on the plain from the blend, that potential appears to be being unleashed at last.

95 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

A rich and round nose, bursting with ripe fruit aromas. Plump and voluptuous on the palate all while having excellent acidity that really lifts it up, so you have depth but also this real aerial aspect. Tannins are smooth and really well framed and this is super fresh. Delicate yet deep, round yet layered with chalky minerality. Elegant and engaging.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a Bordeaux fan or collector is returning again and again to a lauded vintage to see how the wines are evolving. Of course, it's all the more enjoyable as Bordeaux offers you countless opportunities to do so without breaking the bank.

Where the book-end vintages of the acclaimed "trifecta" of 2018, 2019, and 2020 are built on power and longevity, the middle vintage has always stood out for its approachability and refinement, which is clearly apparent in these best-selling, fan-favorite value performers on offer today. Leading off, we have "a really fabulous Cantemerle that surely represents outstanding value" per Neal Martin, who notes "You have no excuse not to have this in your cellar." The 93-point Chasse-Spleen is another hidden gem from Moulis-en-Médoc's most well-known estate, while "the purity and finesse are really something" on the 2019 Pedesclaux Pauillac, according to Jeb Dunnuck. With the pedigree of a multiple 100-point grand vin behind it, the 2019 La Dame de Montrose is once again one of the great second-wine buys of the vintage, "a serious Dame de Montrose, with clear ageing potential," according to Jane Anson.

Best of all, each of these wines is showing out right now and starting to offer prime drinking for any Bordeaux lover who can't resist pulling a cork. And at these prices, you don't have to think twice about it!

A warm wine rich in tannins and with succulent berry fruits, this is both powerful and elegant. Its density doesn't detract from the fruitiness that shines out of the wine and balances with the structured aging potential. Drink the wine from 2025.

97 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

This is really decadent and rich with great aromas of earth, spice, frost flowers and fresh mushrooms that follow through to a full body, firm and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Very, very serious from here. A blend of 70 per cent merlot and 30 per cent cabernet franc. Try after 2025.

Remember 2009? Looking back, it was a year filled some remarkable events – Bitcoin was launched as the first cryptocurrency, "Miracle on the Hudson" pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger safely landed a disabled airliner on a NYC river and the iPhone 3 along with Windows 7 were released – but perhaps more memorable for wine lovers and collectors, the Wine Spectator declared the 2009 Bordeaux vintage "the best in years" rivalling the legendary 1961, while critic Robert Parker Jr. declared it "unquestionably the greatest Bordeaux vintage I have ever tasted," awarding no less than 18 wines with 100 pt. scores. Now entering their second decade of maturity, these top rated 2009 Bordeaux blends offer the "satisfying longevity" that is the litmus test of greatness according to Neal Martin of Vinous, drinking beautifully today and promising decades more of evolution and now available with the bonus of over 10 years of pristine cellaring at exceptional value pricing while they last.

Described as "a textbook growing season" by the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss, 2009 began warm and dry with early flowering and a healthy, uniform crop set, followed by a perfect balance of sun and rain for optimal ripening and finishing with dry, sunny Fall weather that was perfect for harvesting. Recalling their "seductive intensity of fruit and the luscious textures" upon release, Neal Martin points out the remarkable evolution of the 2009's over the last decade, declaring "I love the 2009 Bordeaux vintage" calling it "a smorgasbord of gorgeous wines" that "fulfill the promise heaped upon them at birth." Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson recently described 2009 as "a brilliant vintage which will be going strong in 20, 30, 40 years," confirming the renowned Bordeaux expert's instinct "to trust terroir will come through in the end." Describing 2009 as "one of the greats" ten years on, Jeb Dunnuck declared "I'm happy to report that the wines deliver the goods," already offering "serious pleasure," with the top rated blends from even the smaller appellations promising long lives ahead, "proving you don't have to break the bank to have a classic, age-worthy Bordeaux."

Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Cheval Blanc offers up profound notions of baked blueberries, blackberry compote and crème de cassis with suggestions of chocolate mint, new leather and cloves plus a waft of candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is an exercise in elegance with very classy, super fine-grained tannins, beautiful freshness and layer upon layer of mineral-laced blue and black fruits, finishing long and perfumed.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2019)

The 2009 Château Cheval Blanc continues to just blow me away every time I'm lucky enough to taste a bottle. It has that rare mix of elegance and power that can be hard to describe. Offering a massive bouquet of black cherry liqueur, flowery incense, crème de cassis, toasted spices, and forest floor, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a magical, seamless texture, and a great, great finish. Its tannins and structure are just now starting to emerge from under ample baby fat, but it still has incredible opulence and richness as well as flawless balance. Enjoy this masterpiece any time over the coming 20-30 years.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2020)

A profoundly generous wine with coffee grounds and patisserie notes revealing grilled oak that's subtle but extremely pleasing. The quality of the tannins is exceptional - they are drawn out, elongated and shrouded in smoke. Layer upon layer of complexity unfurls in the mouth, getting better and better, with tons of juicy black fruit. The liquorice is black and tight on the perfectly balanced finish right now, with sprinkles of star anise and a gentle lift of fresh mint. Give it a good few years before opening.

100 points, Jane Anson, Decanter (Feb 2019)

Super-spicy, this is an extremely elegant 2009 with enormous concentration and finesse. The complex finish lights up the sky and you wonder how this spectacular ripeness could have been more perfectly expressed. Drink or hold. (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019)

99 points, James Suckling (Oct 2019)

The 2009 Cheval Blanc has a rambunctious nose with copious red fruit, meat juices, sage and crushed stone aromas, ineffably complex. This is so refined, constantly mutating in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannin. There is a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of cassis, cardamom and allspice. Immense depth and grip towards the finish expresses ripe Cabernet Franc. This is an outstanding 2009 destined for long-term ageing. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

98 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Mar 2019)

Dense, brooding and richly coated, with a well of steeped black currant, fig paste and roasted plum fruit to draw on while the layers of charcoal, Kenya AA coffee and loam resolve themselves. This displays both breadth and depth, offering a great undercurrent of acidity to match its heft. Should be among the most long-lived wines of the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2035. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 7,330 cases made.

2019 Laroze (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

93JD 93JA 93JS 91V

I loved the 2019 Château Laroze from barrel and it's showing nicely from bottle, with an almost Médoc-like bouquet of red and black currants, tobacco, cedar pencil, and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with silky tannins, this complex, nuanced, elegant Saint-Emilion is going to drink beautifully for 10-15 years.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

Well judged and sculpted, powerful berry fruits, hedgerow with a touch of St Emilion glamour, lovely power on the finish. This is good, has an uplift and a ton of joy. Tasted twice. This estate really has taken a big step up in quality over the past few years and this is an upscore from En Primeur, very impressive, one to watch.

93 points, Jane Anson (Jan 2022)

Aromas of currants, black fruit, dried herbs and charcoal. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a supple, creamy and fresh palate. Juicy finish. Drink from 2024.

92 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Laroze offers up copious dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and leather flavors. There is a bit of tannin that needs time to resolve, but overall this is a forward, juicy style that is likely best enjoyed over the medium term.

2020 Chateau Pavie (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
6

100JD 100JS #28 Top 100 99WI

Pure perfection in red wine, the 2020 Château Pavie checks in as 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, all raised in 75% new French oak. Absolutely incredible in every way, it has a sensational bouquet of crème de cassis, smoked tobacco, chocolaty oak, graphite, white truffle, and hints of flowers. Pure, full-bodied, and concentrated, with perfect integration of its fruit, oak, and tannins, it's one of those wines that needs to be tasted to be believed. Hats off to the Perse team for not following trends and for continuing to make a truly Grand Vin that offers a rare mix of power and elegance. Give bottles just 4-5 years and enjoy over the following three decades.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

This opens up on your palate like a butterfly. It takes your breath away. Purity of blackberry, raspberry and black cherry. Lavender. Very, very impressive. Full and chewy with tight and polished tannins that go on and on. Energetic and structured. Crisp and vivid. Superb finish. Better after 2029 but a joy to taste.

100 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

#28 - James Suckling Top 100 of 2023

A blend of 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Pavie has a deep garnet-purple color. After a swirl or two, the nose erupts with powerful notions of baked plums and blueberry preserves, giving way to fragrant notes of molten licorice, lilacs, crushed rocks, and chocolate box, with just a touch of black olives. The medium to full-bodied palate is dense and muscular, charged with amazing tension and textured with super fine-grained tannins, finishing very long with multi-layered exotic spices, mineral and floral notes. Shimmery!

2016 La Dominique (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
6

94JS 93WS 92WA 92JD

The nose is still a bit shy, but there’s lovely, delicate, floral character. Sleek, bright and quite structured with plenty of earthy character. The moderately tannic finish is long, fine and complex. Better in 2020 and good aging potential.

94 points, James Suckling (Feb 2019)

An alluring, intriguing style, featuring dark fig, boysenberry and melted licorice notes wrapped together and flowing through, while hints of graphite and warm ganache hang in the background. Feels polished, with well-buried racy acidity. Distinctive and nicely done. Drink now through 2034. 6,667 cases made.

93 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2019)

The 2016 La Dominique is composed of 80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged for 16 months in 60% new oak and 20% one-year-old oak from four different coopers and 20% in tanks. Deep garnet-purple colored, it features black cherry compote, blackberry pie, sautéed herbs and tree bark with wafts of tobacco and a touch of underbrush. The palate is medium to full-bodied, very firm and structured with a lively lift to the finish. About 6,666 cases produced.

92 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Nov 2018)

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2016 Château La Dominique is unquestionably an outstanding wine. From vines just east of Cheval Blanc and a blend of 80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up 40% in new oak (20% of the blend was in tank), it reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as a stacked bouquet of sweet red and black fruits intermixed with more subtle tobacco, cedary spice, and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, balanced, and a classic 2016 (as well as classic Saint-Emilion), it’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring and drink well for two decades.

2018 Chateau Bellevue-Mondotte (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
6

97WA 97JS 96JD 96V 96WS

Grapes for this wine come from the plateau with yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare. Composed of 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with a 3.5 pH and 14.56% alcohol, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Bellevue Mondotte slowly unfurls to offer profound scents of chocolate-covered cherries, preserved plums, blackberry compote and espresso, with hints of candied violets, tapenade, cast-iron pan and unsmoked cigars. The full-bodied, opulently fruited palate is laden with black fruit and earthy layers, supported by a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long and perfumed. It's tempting to drink now, but give it a good 5 years in bottle for maximum impact and drink it over the next 25 years or more.

97+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

This is really refined with intense tannins that are wonderfully polished, yet powerful. So much crushed stone, mineral, blackberry and blueberry with black-olive and lavender undertones. It’s full-bodied with composure and purpose and a long finish. Chalk undertones. Tight at the end. Small production. Try after 2025.

97 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

One of the more primordial, backward wines in the vintage, the 2018 Bellevue Mondotte is 90% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, brought up in new barrels. Dense purple-hued, it delivers a mineral-drench bouquet of chocolate-covered currants and black cherries as well as notes of camphor, loamy earth, graphite, and violets. Full-bodied and beautifully concentrated on the palate, it still has the vintage's pure, elegant, light on its feet style as well as plenty of background oak, ripe, silky tannins, and again, this wonderful sense of minerality. The cellar will be your friend. I'd give bottles at least 5-7 years, and it should keep for 30-40 years or more. It's an incredible Saint-Emilion.

96+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Bellevue Mondotte is a full-throttle, exotic Saint-Émilion. Inky dark fruit, gravel, spice, mint, lavender, bittersweet chocolate and black pepper are some of the many aromas and flavors that open as this extravagantly ripe Saint-Émilion shows off its allure. Sumptuous and racy, with firm tannins underpinning it all, the 2018 dazzles right out of the gate. I can't wait to see how it ages.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Suave and alluring toast and melted licorice notes draped over a core of warmed plum, raspberry and blackberry confiture flavors make this a real headturner. Very polished and focused in feel, thanks to a buried graphite hint that keeps it all honest. Beautiful wine. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2022 through 2038.

2019 Grand Corbin (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
6

94D 93JD 92JS 92JA

Sweet blackcurrants, tobacco, dark chocolate and black truffle. Great nose, just so much going on. Gorgeous intensity of flavour on the palate, round and juicy black fruits mostly with very softly spiced tannins that support the fruit and give structure and weight. Lively acidity gives bounce and freshness and there is a cooling liquorice touch to the finish. Well made and well finished. Everything feels in balance and harmonious. Clear power but well presented. Could almost drink this now but I would hold for a few years as this will age well.

94 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2022)

Ripe Bing cherries, mulberries, spicy oak, new leather, and candied violet notes all emerge from the 2019 Château Grand Corbin, a rich, medium to full-bodied, Merlot-dominated Saint-Emilion that has the vintage’s pure, balanced, classic style. It shows more minerality and truffly, herbal notes as it sits in the glass and is a beautiful example of the balance and finesse coming from Saint-Emilion these days.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

This has aromas of blueberries, currants, pine cones, oyster shells and nutmeg. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tightly wound tannins. Tight, mineral finish. Fresh. Better in 2024.

92 points, James Suckling (Jan 2022)

Raspberry leaf aromatics, this has delicacy and a sense of momentum through the palate. As with so many of these wines, it was less generous than 2018 En Primeur and that is still the case today, but it has so much potential for enjoyment. From clay, sand and gravel, giving generosity and freshness.

The 2020 Château De Fonbel is based on 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Carmenère, coming from more sandy, gravelly soils. This deep ruby-hued effort offers a terrific bouquet of red and black currants, leafy tobacco, sandalwood, and graphite, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a supple, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It's surprisingly accessible yet is going to have 15 years of prime drinking, possibly more.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

A juicy and fruity red with plums, ripe cherries and ash. Medium body. Delicious fruit and a soft and fruity finish. Drink now or hold.

92 points, James Suckling (Mar 2023)

A blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Carmenere, the 2020 de Fonbel is deep garnet-purple in color. It comes bounding out with notions of boysenberries, stewed plums, and fresh blueberries, plus suggestions of pencil shavings, lavender, and tilled soil. The medium-bodied palate is vibrant and expressive, with very soft tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with lots of energy.

92 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

Fully 70% of the Vauthier family's 2020 Fonbel was aged in tank, and that no doubt helps to explain its appealing purity of fruit. Bursting with notes of cherries, berries, petals and anise, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and charming.

91 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

2023 Chateau Laroque (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
6

95V 95JA 95D 94JS 93WA 93JD

The 2023 Laroque is classy, elegant and polished. A wine of total understatement and class, Laroque sizzles with all of the tension that is such a signature of the limestone parcels. In some recent vintages, Laroque has been more charming at the outset. The 2023, on the other hand, is a wine that is going to require a few years in bottle to be at its finest. Tasted two times.

95+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2026)

Always look forward to tasting this in bottle, and yet again this is one of the buys of the vintage. Sapidity, mouthwatering, juicy, characterful, a ton of raspberry, redcurrant, cranberry and damson fruits, love it. Beaumartin family owners, David Suire winemaker, superbly located estate.

95 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2026)

Bright and sleek, beautifully delineated tannins with a real sense of energy and brightness while still keeping the structure and intensity. There’s concentration for sure, tannins provide a slight grip and hold on the palate with a long, fresh mint-edged finish. Another excellent wine from Laroque. Charming, classy, not super showy, a little understated but with elegance shining through.

95 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2026)

Aromas of currants, crushed stones, chalk and dried flowers. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are integrated and polished. Red currant, cherry and orange peel flavors with a salty undertone. It’s refined and beautiful, with finesse and complexity. 99% merlot and 1% cabernet franc. So drinkable now. Drink or hold.

94 points, James Suckling (Dec 2025)

A blend of 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Laroque is broodier and more introverted than expected, revealing aromas of smoke, licorice, gentian and dark wild berries. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and dense, it is structured around a compact core of fruit framed by powdery tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal and saline finish. Two to four years in bottle should allow it to unwind.

93 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Apr 2026)

Deep purple-hued, the 2023 Château Laroque offers ripe black cherries and darker framboise-like fruit intermixed with leafy herbs, tobacco, and damp, truffly earth-like nuances. Coming from a cooler terroir on the upper plateau, it gains minerality with time in the glass and plays in the medium-bodied, juicy, elegant style of the vintage as well as the château. Beautifully balanced and elegant, it has ripe, integrated tannins and is going to benefit from just 3-4 years of bottle age. Drink 2029-2045.

This is the first vintage since the vineyard returned to the Malet Roquefort family after 60 years. It is full of black fruits and ripe juicy tannins, with a freshness allied to the wine's natural structure. It is a wine to age. Drink from 2027.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Apr 2023)

This shows aromas of ripe black cherries, mulberries, dark chocolate, licorice and crushed walnut. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and velvety with creamy tannins and silky texture. Polished finish. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Drink from 2025.

92 points, James Suckling (Dec 2022)

A great value St-Emilion – this vintage is the first from the Malet Roquefort family of La Gaffelière,who repurchased Château Puyblanquet with its 19ha vineyard in 2020. A Merlot-dominant blend (80%) with aromas of red fruits, blackberry, herbs violet and sweet spice. The palate is fruit-led with velvety black berries and ripe tannins, while limestone soils contribute a mineral character and nice freshness.

92 points, Julie Sheppard, Decanter (Oct 2024)

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from the team at Gaffelière, the 2020 Puy-Blanquet exhibits aromas of sweet red berries, bay leaf, licorice and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively palate that's fine-boned, integrated and mineral in profile.

91 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

The 2020 Château Puyblanquet is up-front and fruit-loaded, with lots of darker berries, truffle, iron, and leafy herb notes to go with a medium to full-bodied style on the palate. It has ripe tannins, good balance, and shines for its fruit and length. I like it today and see no need to hold off, although it's going to keep for at least 8-10 years.

Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

1999 La Mondotte (St. Emilion): Along with the 1997, the 1999 is the most forward and accessible La Mondotte yet produced. Its opaque purple color is followed by a glorious nose of candied black fruits, graphite, licorice, and underbrush. It is full-bodied and sumptuous, possessing amazing extract and richness for the vintage. Its high tannin is hidden by a wealth of glycerin, fruit, and extract. Moreover, the finish lasts for 35-45 seconds. This is an amazing achievement in 1999. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

The 2018 La Clotte represents another big move forward for this château under the Vauthier family. Bright, focused and tightly wound, the 2018 is going to need at least a few years to soften, but its pedigree is evident, even in the early going. Sage, mint, lavender, rose petal and blood orange meld into the vibrant, polished finish.

95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

This estate is continuing its rise under the tutelage of the Vauthier family of Château Ausone. With firm tannins, dark black fruits, smoky flavors and touches of spice, the wine will need time. Drink from 2026.

94 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

Even in the short time that the Vauthiers have been making La Clotte, you can see the depth and precision increasing. This is a little more serious perhaps than the Moulin Saint-Georges in the same range. Pretty austere at this point, but packed with dark fruits and with promise. Cabernet Sauvignon uprooted after the 2019 vintage.

94 points, Jane Anson, Decanter (Nov 2020)

The 2018 La Clotte is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it slips seductively out of the glass with spicy scents of powdered cinnamon, cloves and Sichuan pepper over a core of stewed plums, boysenberries and kirsch, plus a waft of menthol. A thrilling selection of perfectly rated St. Emilion Bordeaux, these elegant 100 pt. vintages of the legendary Cheval Blanc seamlessly layer opulent, concentrated fruit with silky smooth tannins promising a rich and storied evolution for decades to come, earning their place among the world's most celebrated and collectible red wines with a pedigree James Suckling describes as "mindboggling" at a best on the market price.

Boasting an exceptionally complex terroir with a patchwork of different soils, Cheval Blanc's vineyards blend Pomerol's typical clay with the gravel common to St. Emilion, each of its 45 plots vinified separately and then aged for 3 months in barrel before the final blend is assembled and aged for 16 to 18 months in 100% new French oak. A blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, Antonio Galloni describes the seductive 100 pt. 2020 Cheval Blanc as "a wine of mind-blowing balance" calling it "one of the truly great wines of the vintage," that "will no doubt deliver unbridled enjoyment when it's ready" according to Decanter's Georgina Hindle. Called "one of the unequivocally great wines of the vintage" by the Wine Advocate's William Kelley, the sensational 100 pt. 2019 Cheval Blanc boasts 58% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon with a "remarkably lush and fine-grained texture" according to the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth while Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson describes the magnificent 2018 100 pt. Cheval Blanc as "exceptionally good and extremely elegant," a blend of 54% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Described as a "masterpiece" by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the opulent 100 pt. 2016 Cheval Blanc is a blend of 58% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, revealing a "beautifully ripe texture, finishing long and earthy" according to the Wine Independent's Lisa Perrotti-Brown and the rich and refined 100 pt. 2009 Cheval Blanc boasts a "rare mix of elegance and power" according to Jeb Dunnuck with "flawless balance," the blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc entering its window of drinkability after over a decade of pristine cellaring.

Summing up Cheval Blanc's reputation as one of the longest-lived Bordeaux, Antonio Galloni of Vinous declared "There is simply nothing like a great Cheval Blanc in all of Bordeaux" – these 100 pt. gems promising to prove that point in a big way with some seriously enjoyable drinking over the next decades for those fortunate to stash some away.

100JD 100JA 99V 98JS 98WI

The Grand Vin 2020 Château Cheval Blanc checks in as a blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that was raised, as always, in 100% new French oak. As usual with Cheval Blanc, it's primarily about finesse and elegance, as well as complexity, and exhibits a deep purple hue as well as a kaleidoscopic bouquet of sweet red and black fruits, spring flowers, spicy incense, loamy earth, and smoke tobacco. Absolutely flawless on the palate, it's full-bodied, has perfectly integrated oak, ripe, silky tannins, and a gorgeous finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. This powerful, concentrated Cheval Blanc offers pleasure even today (needs lots of air) but warrants 7-8 years of bottle age and will see its 40th birthday in fine form.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

Intense, indelible, with layer upon layer of blueberry, raspberry, pomegranate, fennel, liqourice, crayon, espresso, crushed rocks, just so much character and poise. The driest year at Cheval Blanc since 1959, with 71% of production from the 39ha estate in this wine, technical director Pierre Olivier Clouet. This continues to be bottled as Premier Grand Cru Classé A until the 2022 vintage, following its withdrawal from the ranking, which will make an interesting footnote for collectors I would imagine, but makes zero difference to the brilliance of what is in the bottle.

100 points, Jane Anson (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Cheval Blanc is eternal, seamless and exceptionally beautiful. All the elements are so well put together. Rose petal, blood orange, raspberry jam and cinnamon all take shape in the glass. Above all else, the 2020 Cheval Blanc is a wine of mind-blowing balance. Hints of mocha, raspberry jam, pomegranate and spice emerge with time in the glass. Cheval is quite simply one of the truly great wines of the vintage.

99 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Lots of blueberries and flowers such as violets and crushed stone. This is very structured and muscular with minerally tannins that run the length of the wine. Very closed. Polished texture that gives it class and presence. This is one for the cellar. 65% merlot, 30% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2030.

98 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

A blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Cheval Blanc has more Merlot than usual as some of the young Cabernet Franc that would normally be used was not suitable this year but the Merlot was outstanding! It has a deep purple-black color and a pH of 3.7. The nose is very closed and tight to begin, needing a lot of swirling to coax out notes of plum preserves, black cherry compote, and blueberry pie, followed by suggestions of pencil shavings, clove oil, candied violets, cast-iron pan, and fertile loam, with a waft of wild sage. The medium to full-bodied palate is locked-up tight, with loads of layers, bound with a firm frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy. It will need a lot of time!

2019 Chateau Pavie (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

The 2019 Château Pavie is another beauty that offers more density and sexiness than just about every other wine in the vintage, yet it is still an unnecessarily restrained expression of this terroir, which is the fad in Bordeaux these days. Based on 50% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up in 80% new French oak, this deep purple-hued effort has a great bouquet of ripe black cherries, darker currants, tobacco leaf, violets, and graphite, with a beautiful sense of minerality and salinity on the palate. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it has plenty of background oak, a deep, layered mid-palate, terrific tannins, and a great finish. It shows the more understated, elegant style of the vintage yet is still pure Pavie. Hide bottles for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following 30+.

99 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

Deep garnet purple in color, the 2019 Pavie is a tad restrained to start, needing some patient swirling to coax out notes of fresh blueberries and boysenberries plus underlying scents of kirsch, violets, star anise, and fragrant earth. The full-bodied palate is taut with bright, youthful, muscular black fruits, supported by plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing on a persistent floral note. This was the first vintage for the move from 60% to 50% Merlot along with 30% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.

99 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Dec 2023)

Lots of blackberry and grilled meat with earth and spice. Some smoky undertones, too. Blackcurrants. Complex. Full-bodied with round, juicy tannins, yet they turn extremely fine and very linear and go on for minutes. Great length. A blend of 50% merlot, 32% cabernet franc and 18% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2027, but already a joy to drink.

98 points, James Suckling (Jan 2022)

The 2019 Pavie is incredibly elegant right out of the gate. Aromas of crushed rose petal, cedar, mint and sweet pipe tobacco are immediately alluring. The 2019 is sensual and inviting, with no excess weight and fabulous overall balance. Blood orange, red/purplish fruit, cinnamon and mint develop effortlessly. Time in the glass brings out Cabernet Franc aromatics and structure, leading to a feeling of vertical intensity that is hugely appealing.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Dreamy right from the start, with a seductive mouthfeel to its mix of raspberry puree, cassis and creamed plum flavors infused with rooibos tea, black licorice and alder accents. Long and extremely fine-grained through the finish, with subtle floral lift and a lingering hint of chalky minerality. Gorgeous. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2025 through 2040. 8,000 cases made.

2017 Chateau Troplong Mondot (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

The  100 pt.

The 2017 Troplong Mondot is stunning, just as it was en primeur. Rich and ample, yet endowed with striking energy as well, the 2017 is the first vintage made by new CEO Aymeric de Gironde and consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos. The 2017 takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. All of the power that is typical of this site is evident, it seems to come so naturally, and yet picking earlier and then using a lighter hand in the cellar yielded a Troplong of uncommon energy and vibrancy. The 2017 has been nothing short of thrilling on the four occasions I have tasted it from bottle so far. What a wine!

98+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2020)

This wine is structured, with dense tannins as well as impressively ripe black fruit. Showing lifted acidity, succulent blackberry flavors and elegance, it has a good future and will be ready from 2025.

96 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Mar 2020)

Very perfumed and subtle with crushed currants, smoke and blackberries. Medium to full body. Compressed, round tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows focus and finesse with serious structure for the vintage. It grows slowly on the palate. Really beautiful. Drink after 2022.
