Crafted from a selection of the estate’s best quality Sangiovese grapes, the elegant 96 pt. 2019 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione offers rich, brambly fruit hinting of crushed herbs and exotic spice with refreshing acidity, an exceptional, top tier Chianti Classico from “one of the headline estates” of Castelnuovo Berardenga according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner and a stunning value.

With a history dating back to the 9th century, the Castello di Bossi winery was founded in 1984 by entrepreneur Marco Bacci in the Chianti Classico hills east of Siena, its wines crafted under the direction of superstar Tuscan-born consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini. Located on an estate spanning over 800 hectares, Castello di Bossi’s 130 hectares of organically farmed vineyards are situated on rolling hillsides at altitudes averaging 350 meters above sea level, planted mostly to Sangiovese in a mix of tuffs, yellow clays, calcareous sands and broken stones. Introduced as the highest quality category in Chianti Classico in 2013, the rigorous guidelines for Gran Selezione require it to be crafted from all estate grown fruit with a minimum of 80% Sangiovese and aged for at least 30 months prior to release, compared to 12 months for Chianti Classico and 24 months for Chianti Classico Riserva. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese sourced from the Corbaia Vineyard boasting vines over 40 years of age as well as parcels throughout the estate, the richly concentrated 2019 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione was fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks before aging two years in large 500 liter French tonneaux followed by 6 months in bottle, yielding fragrant luscious fruit and bright acidity with lithe, silky tannins built for years of enjoyment on an elegant finish.

From a Chianti Classico vintage producing wines of “exceptional balance” and “terrific depth” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the alluring 96 pt. 2019 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione ranks among the vintage's top-rated wines, a superb value for Chianti lovers and collectors of Tuscany’s top reds to stash away and enjoy over the next decade and beyond.

There’s purity to the cherry, strawberry, rose, mineral and herb aromas and flavors in this solidly built red, which shows excellent balance and length. The muscular finish begs for more time for the beautiful fruit to assimilate. Best from 2025 through 2042. 1,700 cases made, 800 cases imported.

#11 - Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2023

You drive through a postcard-perfect panorama of cypress-lined roads and sun-lit farmhouses as you approach the tiny hamlet of Bossi on the southern side of the appellation. The organic Castello di Bossi 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione reveals a dark core of black fruit that is surrounded by flinty mineral, spice and black licorice. This wine should become even silkier and softer with more bottle age. This 20,000-bottle release will hit the market this fall.

Lots of blackberry, black-cherry and lavender aromas with some sage. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Linear and polished red. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

2019 Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

94JD 94JS 93WA 93V

The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva is 90% Sangiovese and the rest Canaiolo and Colorino, raised only in used barrique and large cask. It pours a pure ruby and has floral and herbal aromas of cherry candy, black raspberry, forest herbs, tomato leaf, and dried roses. It is medium to full bodied, with good concentration, fine tannins, and a long, clean finish, and it is savory with dried herbs, oregano, dried cherry, salty earth, and an angular structure. This pure and detailed wine is going to be a fantastic one to cellar and to drink 2025-2040.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2023)

Crushed stones with black cherries and fresh flowers. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a flavorful finish. Still so young and fruity with wonderful energy. Give it another two or three years, if you can bear to wait.

94 points, James Suckling (Jul 2022)

The Riservas from across the appellation are showing very well in 2019. This wine is no exception. The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva (which is a blend of 90% Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Colorino aged in different-sized oak barrels for up to 18 months) offers pretty richness and concentration. The wine's ample volume is fleshed out with dark fruit, spice and blue flower. It should be fun to try this wine in five years' time, when it loses its baby fat. Happily, production is very generous, with 200,000 bottles made.

93 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva is a dark, brooding wine. Black cherry, incense, tobacco, menthol, licorice, scorched earth and savory undertones all take shape in the glass. There's real intensity here, not to mention tons of character. There are many beautiful wines in this range, but for the money, it is pretty hard to beat this Riserva.

2020 Dievole Chianti Classico (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

Described as “one of Italy’s ultimate value wines” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the sleek and refined 92 pt. 2020 Dievole Chianti Classico offers rich aromatics and concentrated spiced, earthy fruit balancing fresh acidity and soft, smooth tannins, a winning choice for Chianti Classico fans and anyone seeking a deliciously food friendly Tuscan wine to enjoy often at a bargain price.

One of Chianti Classico’s most historic estates dating back to the 11th century, Dievole is located in the Castelnuovo Berardenga district in the southernmost part of the Chianti region, its rise in quality over the last decade fueled by the investments of Argentinian wine entrepreneur Alejandro Bulgheroni. Implementing “an elegant and streamlined approach with a focus on finesse and polish” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, Bulgheroni hired renowned enologist Alberto Antonini, recognized as one of the world’s top five wine consultants in a Decanter survey of his peers, to revitalize the estate from the ground up, transitioning the vineyards to organic viticulture and upgrading the winemaking facilities including replacing modern oak fermenters with cement vats in the cellar to accentuate freshness. Maintaining a large part of the massive 600-hectare estate as forest and meadows to preserve biodiversity, Dievole’s organically certified vineyards span 158 hectares with 100 hectares dedicated to Sangiovese, situated on slopes between 270 and 420 meters above sea level with a mosaic of soils ranging from silty clay to a mix of marl and fossils. Employing a long fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large cement tanks, Antonini aged the 2020 Dievole Chianti Classico in large untoasted French oak casks for 13 months with three additional months in bottle, yielding an expressive Sangiovese with energetic acidity and a fresh, harmonious finish ready to be enjoyed over the next few years.

Described as “the ultimate comeback kid” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the elegant 92 pt. 2020 Dievole Chianti Classico reflects the estate’s consistent and steady rise in quality over the last decade, delivering on consulting winemaker Antonini’s goal of making enticing, terroir-reflective wines that draw you back again and again and offered at a outstanding value price that makes it easy to pull the cork.

Energetic and lifted, the 2020 Chianti Classico is an expressive beginning to the range from Dievole. Attractive, pure aromas of candied raspberry, fresh Mediterranean herbs, and cedar are followed by a medium bodied red with fine tannins and refreshing acidity in its notes of orange peel, dried cherry, and saline dried earth. It’s a wine to continue to come back to and offers a lot of pleasure pound for pound. Drink 2023-2030.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2023)

The 2020 Dievole Chianti Classico has a sweet, creamy spice nose with ripe cherry notes, not too intense but appealing. On the palate it is juicy, lively and bright with very firm and noticeable tannins which enclose the ripe fruit and add to the long, lingering finish. It feels a bit too young right now so wait 1-2 years then drink up to 15.

92 points, Susan Hulme, Wine Independent (Jan 2023)

A certified organic wine, the Dievole 2020 Chianti Classico is a great option if you're looking for an entry-level red from Tuscany. This blend of 90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino is fresh and buoyant. It shows great clarity of aromas, balance and punchy fruit flavors. It's great fun to drink, and that fun factor is backed by a very reasonable price point. Production is 200,000 bottles.

Fairly complex, but still bright, with spiced red plums and cherries, bark, leather and a hint of mushroom savoriness. Quite integrated and silky with a medium to full body, rounded by firm but velvety tannins. Long, yet subtle and fruit-expressive. Produced from vines of the Tenuta Tignanello estate, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers a flashier and riper style with notes of Marasca cherry liqueur, polished leather, toasted vanilla bean, and licorice candy. It is full bodied without being heavy and is rich with plum, cedar, sage, and potting soil. From a reference point Chianti Classico producer described as “one of the great estates in the world” by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, these top scoring selections showcase Fattoria Felsina’s full range of Tuscan wines, from highly rated Chianti Classicos and age worthy Sangiovese to an elegant Chardonnay declared “one of the country’s best” by critic Ian D’Agata, always among the region’s top values and now unbeatably bargain priced for stocking up.

Perched on a hilltop in Castelnuovo Berardenga in southern Chianti Classico, Fattoria Felsina has risen to the top of appellation under the direction of Giuseppe Mazzocolin for over four decades, the massive 500-hectare estate boasting 95 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards and now run third generation Giovanni Poggiali. A lush Sangiovese that “readers should consider buying by the case,” according to Vinous critic Galloni, the compelling 93 pt. 2021 Felsina Chianti Classico Berardenga offers rich dark fruit hinting of earthy spice “backed by a solid base of tannins and vibrant acidity” according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson, while the fresh and vibrant 92 pt. 2021 Felsina I Sistri is “a classic expression of Chardonnay” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, boasting intensely aromatic stone and citrus flavors framed by salty minerality and declared “a world class example of what Italy can do with this variety” by Italian wine expert Ian D’Agata. Earning the #22 spot on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2023, the sumptuous 94 pt. 2020 Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva reveals rich dark Sangiovese flavors with bright acidity from an outstanding vintage. .

Boasting an “extraordinary ability to convey the essence of variety, place and vintage” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, these top rated Felsina wines reflect the estate’s rich legacy as standard bearers in Chianti Classico, promising to overdeliver value from an enticing Chardonnay to a full range of age worthy Sangiovese wines and ready to enjoy whenever an authentic taste of Tuscany beckons.

A firm and silky red with cherry, dried flower and orange peel aromas and flavors. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fresh and focused finish. Needs a little time to soften but I already enjoy the energy here. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2023)

The Fèlsina 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga has a spicy or crunchy side that I often find with Sangiovese. There is a lot of fruit brightness here with cassis, red cherry, mineral, dried tobacco and grilled rosemary. This is an easy-drinking Tuscan red with the natural acidity and brightness to pair with a classic lasagna or eggplant parmigiana.

91 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (May 2023)

This has a saline undercurrent to the cherry, cinnamon, rose hip, earth and Tuscan scrub flavors, all backed by a solid base of tannins and vibrant acidity. Long, energetic finish. Best from 2024 through 2030. 22,500 cases made, 8,000 cases imported.

91 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2023)

In the southeastern confines of the denomination, the Fèlsina estate has been an unwavering proponent of 100% Sangiovese. Even the annata captures the wildness of this grape combined with the Mediterranean character of this warm and luminous corner of Chianti Classico. The 2021 starts with smoky nuances, earth and subtle oak, then progresses to fragrant mint and thyme. It is concentrated and ripe, yet balanced by freshness and agility. An underlying firmness releases gradually to reveal a savoury finish of sundried tomato.

Oak aging plays a larger role in shaping the intensity and texture of the Barone Ricasoli 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio (with 80,000 bottles produced). You can count on a solid 10-year aging window for this wine. Made with all Sangiovese, the wine is balanced and especially bright with dark fruit, spice and cured tobacco. It offers soft tannins, ample volume and lingering hints of toast and spice. This is another terrific value (with some aging potential too).

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Sep 2020)

Shows real concentration for a Chianti Classico with notes of brambleberries, blackcurrants, black cherries and baking spices. Full body, grippy tannins and loads of fruit. But this remains refined and elegant, all thanks to the precise acidity. Drink now.

93 points, James Suckling (Sep 2018)

The 2016 Chianti Classico is an explosion of floral-infused aromatics and red-toned fruit, all in the super-classic mid-weight style that is such a signature of the Querciabella house style today. Rose petal, lavender, mint and sweet raspberry fruit are pushed to the forefront. This is the first vintage in which more than half of the wine was aged in larger format oak ranging from tonneau to cask. Vineyards in Gaiole and Greve form the core of the blend, with a touch of fruit from Radda. The 2016 has enough freshness to drink well for another decade plus, but I would give it a few years in bottle for the bright acids to integrate a bit further. There are a number of pricier wines in Querciabella's range, but I am not sure any of them can match the Chianti Classico for pure pleasure. What a lovely wine it is.

92+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2019)

“A highly recommended discovery from Radda in Chianti”

Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Producing “deep, soulful wines loaded with character” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, these highly rated 2019 Caparsa selections from masterful winemaker Paolo Cianferoni are a must for Sangiovese fans and collectors of age worthy Italian red wines, bargain priced for mixing a case or two or selecting a favorite to enjoy over the next decade.

Boasting imposing defensive walls and medieval towers, the centuries old hilltop village of Radda in Chianti boasts a panoramic view overlooking a woven landscape of lush, low-lying forests and manicured vineyards in the middle of Chianti Classico, the cooler hilly terrain yielding wines of “extreme elegance” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Kerin O’Keefe. Working over 50 harvests at his family’s Radda in Chianti estate since the age of seven, passionate winemaker Paolo Cianferoni is a pioneer in Chianti Classico since taking the reins in 1982, implementing a vineyard-driven approach to crafting his Sangiovese wines and among the first to employ organic viticulture in the region. Described by critic Galloni as “a truly a special place,” Caparsa’s organically certified vineyards span 12 hectares, planted with old vine Sangiovese averaging around 60 years of age in rugged galestro and albarese soils on a hillside around 450 meters above sea level, with most of the estate remaining forested to support biodiversity. Fermenting the hand selected fruit with indigenous yeasts in cement vats in the estate’s centuries’ old cellar and bottling without filtering or fining, the vibrant 93 pt. 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Caparsino was aged in large oak barrels for around 15 months, “giving it a super-classic feel that is absolutely thrilling” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, while noting the smaller production, single vineyard 95 pt. 2019 Doccio a Matteo Riserva boasts “a real sense of exoticness,” aged in a mix of mostly smaller oak casks and cement for over two years before bottling to yield fresh, richly concentrated fruit balanced by fine integrated tannins. Naming it to honor his longtime partner Gianna whose nickname is Mimma, Paolo selected his best grapes for the 96 pt. 2019 Mimma Rosso IGT, aging it in large old casks with nearly 3 years longer in bottle and crafting a rich and uniquely elegant Sangiovese that Galloni describes as “aromatically beguiling and light on its feet.”

From an excellent Chianti vintage producing fresh Sangiovese wines with “wonderful concentration and ripe tannins” according to Jeb Dunnuck, these alluring 2019 Caparsa selections are a reference point for Radda in Chianti while remaining one of the best kept secrets in Chianti Classico, three incredibly delicious and pure expressions of Sangiovese from one of the region’s most undervalued producers promising a decade or more of enjoyment.

95V 94WA

The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo is stellar. Dark, ample and layered, the 2019 possesses remarkable depth and nuance right out of the gate. Black cherry, lavender, licorice, coffee and new leather all flesh out in this deceptively mid-weight Riserva. Impressive.

95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2022)

A smaller production compared to the Caparsino, with just 6,700 bottles made, the organic Caparsa 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo is 98% Sangiovese with a 2% splash of Colorino. The wine is fermented with spontaneous yeasts and aged in smaller oak cask for the most part with a little percentage of the wine finishing in cement. It shows a dark garnet color with aromas of spicy fruit, plum, blackberry and cherry liqueur. It closes with sweet tannins and medium-rich concentration.

95WA 93WS

Dievole's 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna di Sessina (100% Sangiovese) is similar to the Riserva made in the same vintage, only this wine offers more dark and savory definition. It's a small margin of difference, but it is perceptible, thus adding even more fuel to the overall intensity, power and depth of this wine. The 2016 vintage is beautiful, and one of its best qualities is that every minor detail of the fruit, vineyard management and winemaking comes into enhanced focus and sharpness. It's imperative not to get anything wrong, and this wine gets it all right. This second edition of a Gran Selezione from Dievole is more profound and complete compared to last year's release. Described as a “gem of a producer” by Decanter, Podere Le Cinciole may well be the ultimate insider’s Tuscan estate, these high scoring, under the radar selections expressing the estate’s exceptional “golden” terroir in Chianti Classico's high altitude terrain and quietly gaining the lesser known Le Cinciole a reputation among critics including Antonio Galloni of Vinous as “one of the leading estates in all of Italy," each of these artisan-crafted red wines also among the region’s top values.

Situated on a biodiverse 30-hectare hilltop estate that includes an olive grove of 1,000 trees, Le Cinciole owners Luca Orsini and Valeria Vigano produce their measured, thoughtful wines from 11-hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Conca d’Oro, the amphitheater-shaped “golden basin” considered the Grand Cru of the region, planted in galestro soils of clay and schist ranging from 400 to 450 meters above sea level at one of the highest elevations in the region. Described as “one of the most distinctive wines in the appellation” by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, the remarkably expressive 93 pt. 2019 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico and 92 pt. 2020 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico entry level cuvees were crafted from 100% Sangiovese and aged for 12 months in medium French oak barrels and a year in concrete before bottling, yielding seductive, earthy fruit and elegant tannins and described as “a perennial overperformer” by Decanter’s Michaela Morris that’s not to be missed. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese and aged well beyond the minimum requirement of 30 months for Chianti Classico's elite Gran Selezione category, Decanter critic Morris named the elegant 96 pt. 2016 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi one of her Top 10 wines of 2021, its luscious core of rich Sangiovese fruit and balanced mineral driven acidity boasting “quite a wow factor,” while Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate describes the “bold” 95 pt. 2018 Gran Selezione Aluigi as having “a lovely defined character” and Antonio Galloni of Vinous praises the 96 pt. 2019 Gran Selezione Aluigi as setting the gold standard for the classification, exclaiming “what a gorgeous wine this is.” A deeply layered blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Syrah and Merlot, the exquisite 95 pt. 2016 Le Cinciole Camalaione is “absolutely gorgeous” according to critic Galloni, boasting lush dark fruits with remarkable persistence and balanced acidity, while the powerful 94 pt. 2017 Le Cinciole Camalaione “packs a huge punch” and the enticing 96 pt. 2018 Le Cinciole Camalaione is “a knockout,” describing the atypical blend as offering “stunning depth and textural intensity.” Sourced from 100% Sangiovese grown in a single vineyard at the estate’s highest elevation, Antonio Galloni calls the flagship 97 pt. 2017 Le Cinciole Petresco “breathtaking” while the 98 pt. 2019 Le Cinciole Petresco boasts “notable depth and intensity,” and like all Le Cinciole’s top cuvees, both are built to deliver pleasurable drinking over the next decade and beyond.

While Panzano and the Conca D’Oro have gained notoriety among collectors as the home to high profile producers like Fontodi, Le Cinciole's top scoring wines remain among Tuscany’s hidden treasures, still seeming “to fly under the radar” according to Antonio Galloni and a rare opportunity for lovers and collectors of bold Tuscan reds to “strike gold” and scoop up a stash of Le Cinciole’s purely irresistible wines at unbeatable prices.

The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi Campo ai Peri is a terrific follow up to the stellar 2016. Rich, deep and explosive, the Aluigi saturates the palate with dark fruit, leather, tobacco, spice, menthol and espresso notes. This ample, full-bodied Panzano Gran Selezione hits all the right notes. The marriage of elegance and pure power is compelling.

The 2020 Chianti Classico is gorgeous. Wonderfully pure and bright, the 2020 conveys the essence of Sangiovese in its vibrant red-toned fruit. A juicy and pretty wine with berries, chocolate, and bark. Subtle. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that are slightly chewy and austere now but will soften nicely with age. Better after 2025.

94 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

In a bottle with a black label, the Fèlsina 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga shows an open-knit quality with soft fruit flavors of dark cherry and baked plum. Those fruit flavors are followed by pretty mineral notes and light spice. That openness and those sweet cherry flavors are characteristic of the warm 2020 growing season. The wine finishes with bright acidity that is typical of Sangiovese.

The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva is another super-classic wine in this range from Fèlsina. Dried herbs, game, scorched earth, tobacco, incense and dark fruit infuse the Riserva with tons of nuance. The Riserva conveys tons of village character as well as the house style.

The 2020 Chianti Classico is such a classy wine. Deep and layered, yet wonderfully translucent, the 2020 is one of the best editions of this wine I can remember tasting. The Monteraponi Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello is among the finest expressions of Sangiovese you will find. Its limited production makes that all the more challenging. The Cru Il Campitello is the oldest planting at Monteraponi exceeding 40 years of age. Elevation here in Radda is 420 meters yielding textbook Riserva from ‘galestro’ soils which is drinkable now but will well endure another decade.

Aromas of mature plum, blue flower and pipe tobacco shape the nose along with a whiff of leather. The focused palate delivers juicy morello cherry, blood orange and licorice while taut fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity offer lithe elegant support. Drink 2022–2029.

This organic wine shows a humorous sketch on the front label of an old man with a traditional Chianti flask. The Caparsa 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Caparsino offers a pretty spread of dark fruit, ripe berry nuances, toasted spice and earth. It's all Sangiovese matured in large oak casks. This plush, medium-bodied red represents a production of 12,000 bottles all said and done.
