I began using B21 about 2 years ago. Wish I had found them sooner. They represent about 70% to 80 % of my liquor buys. Only the odd things are purchased elsewhere. Once you use them you will be hooked. Inventory, professional staff, quick shipping and competative pricing are what I really appreciate. Try them, you have nothing to lose and much to gain.

2021 Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva is a wine of pedigree and class. Aromatic, vibrant and delineated, the Riserva captures all the best qualities of the year." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Now under the third generation of the Bianchi family, Castello di Monsanto is one of the most forward-looking yet traditional estates in Chianti Classico. After all, founder Aldo Bianchi was the visionary who first choose to bottle a single-vineyard wine from their prized Il Poggio parcel, and now his granddaughter, Laura, runs the estate with the same view toward the future that her father and grandfather did, and they now produce some of the most acclaimed, traditionally styled wines in the region.

Another "sublime effort" from an epic vintage, the 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva is the estate's flagship expression of its philosophy and terroir, an ideal Tuscan microclimate that, along with the estate's use of Slavonian oak, produces Sangiovese wines of artisanal finesse and refinement. With a mountain of sterling critical praise, including several 95-point reviews, the 2021 Riserva stacks up as an all-time great value buy from Italy at well under $30, so you can (and should) consider stacking it by the case.

This luscious, dense red is packed with cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and violet flavors. Its tannins are ripe and refined, while the vibrant acidity keeps everything focused. An iron streak weaves through the long, energetic finish. This is approachable now yet will be better in 2–3 years. Best from 2026 through 2045. 833 cases made, 400 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

A deep and complex wine with licorice, dried cherries, pomegranates, bergamot and violets on the nose. Soft on the palate, it’s powerful and extracted yet not without grace due to velvety tannins, a full body and tight-knit acidity. Super-tense finish. Drink or hold.

95 points, James Suckling (Mar 2025)

The intention with Castello di Monsanto’s Riserva is to make a wine with immediate accessibility as well as serious cellaring potential. Gorgeous and precise from the get-go, the 2021 is profuse in aromas of black pepper, flint and earthy brambles. Equally perfumed, the palate ups the ante with rose, bergamot and graphite. A firm tannic spine and linear acidity are matched by fruit depth galore, all intricately and tightly stitched. My instinct is that this is only going to get better, so I prefer to wait. The solution is to buy a few bottles to enjoy its evolution.

95 points, Michaela Morris, Decanter (Apr 2025)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva is a wine of pedigree and class. Aromatic, vibrant and delineated, the Riserva captures all the best qualities of the year. Crushed flowers, dark red/purplish fruit, mint, blood orange and pomegranate are some of the many notes that build in the glass. This is a sublime effort.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2024)

The Monsanto expressions of Sangiovese are uniformly excellent, but all in marvelously different ways. The Riserva always stands out to me for the depth and texture it offers, and for the riot of Tuscan herbs that sprout on the nose, before ripe, snappy cherry notes light up the palate.

2021 Fonterutoli Chianti Classico (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

"Two thousand twenty-one is the single greatest young vintage I have ever tasted in Chianti Classico. Period. Full stop." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

There you have it. We couldn't have said it better ourselves. This epic Tuscan vintage keeps delivering the goods in every denominacion across the region, but it truly seems like Chianti Classico hit the highest heights of all with "majestic wines endowed with striking aromatics, layered fruit and all the energy that is such a signature of the appellation." We've seen countless head-turning standouts come through already (with more to come soon), and today we're showcasing the some of the region's best buys.

Leading off, our direct-import star Le Cinciole has, to no one's surprise, delivered incredible bang for the buck in their "juicy, vivid, and crunchy" entry-level value star. Ruffino, perhaps Chianti's most well-known estate, turned out a Wine Spectator Top 20 Riserva with their 2021 Ducale, and Fonterutoli's 2021 delivers a double-93-point powerhouse expression, "darker, more powerful and concentrated than your standard entry-level Chianti Classico" according to Monica Larner. The double 95-point 2021 Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva stacks up as an all-time great value buy from Italy at under $30. "Aromatic, vibrant and delineated, the Riserva captures all the best qualities of the year," writes Antonio Galloni.

Finally, we are thrilled to present the 2021s from our direct-import secret weapon, Caparsa. "Caparsa remains one of Chianti Classico's under-the- radar gems, a small estate known only to relatively small subset of wine lovers," notes Galloni, "These new releases are nothing short of captivating." The DC95 2021 Chianti Classico is "pure drinking pleasure" for a mere song. Few, if any, of the Chiantis we've found in the sub-$30 price range deliver quite the impact and head-turning presence that the 2021 Caparsa does. As Galloni writes, "This is a very serious, hugely overachieving Chianti Classico." The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Caparsino finishes everything off with its pair of 95-point reviews from Decanter and Galloni, who praises it as "plush and wonderfully deep right out of the gate" making for "a Riserva of uncommon character and distinction."

No matter your style preference, Chianti Classico's extraordinary 2021 vintage has the perfect fit at prices that make it easy to stock up big.

93WS 93JS 92WA 91V

This powerful red is dense yet fleshy, evoking cherry, tobacco, iron, earth and wild herb notes. Balanced and fresh, with a lingering aftertaste of fruit, savory Mediterranean herbs and mineral notes. Best from 2026 through 2041. 5,000 cases made, 500 cases imported.

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Jun 2024)

Notes of raspberries and cherries with red licorice, dried orange peel and spices. Medium- to full-bodied with meaty structure. Tannins are wide and velvety with a juicy, red-fruited mid-palate. Fresh and crunchy at the end. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

From a vintage that delivered great results across the region, the 2021 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is a bit darker, more powerful and concentrated than your standard entry-level Chianti Classico. Cherry and dark plum cede to pretty mineral tones. That extra intensity is part of the house style and is a little gift for those who appreciate more meat on those Sangiovese bones. In fact, that grape is blended with a small 10% part of Malvasia Nera and Colorino in this ample 290,000-bottle release hitting the market now.

92 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is redolent of dark cherry, plum, leather, licorice, menthol, dried herbs, incense and sage. Pliant and expressive, with gorgeous depth, the 2021 is a fine edition of the straight Chianti Classico.

2022 Felsina Chianti Classico Berardenga (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

We lead off with a pair of new 2022s that highlight the reference-point quality found at every level in the Felsina range. "The 2022 Chianti Classico Berardenga is superb. Rich and deep yet also quite translucent, the 2022 is an archetype of Castelnuovo Berardenga," writes Antonio Galloni, and it comes in at an easy case-buy price that makes it a perfect candidate for your next go-to house red. Likewise, the 2023 I Sistri Chardonnay shows the broad range of Felsina's repertoire, a "deep, intense and characterful" Chardonnay expression that impressed James Suckling to the tune of 93 points.

The 2021 Berardenga Riserva is quite possibly the star of the show, garnering an eye-opening press across the board led by a pair of 95 point reviews fromWine Spectator and Italian wine authority Kerin O'Keefe, who found it "elegant and showing wonderful intensity." James Suckling calls the 2021 "a well-composed, balanced and refined riserva," while Antonio Galloni declares, "A wine of nuance and layers, the 2021 has so much to offer."

With all the hype surrounding 2021, savvy Italian fans can find some truly superb buys in the 2020 vintage as well, not least of which is the 2020 Fontalloro Toscana. With same universal praise as the rest of Fèlsina's line, led by 96 points from Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, the 2020 is "a vibrant red ...On the elegant side, despite its youthful power, with excellent harmony" according to Wine Spectator.

Finally, for savvy dessert wine fans, the Vin Santo category is a hotbed of impressive offerings that showcase singular style and character, and there are few, if any, Vin Santos that surpass that of the inimitable Felsina for quintessential character and class. "The 2017 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is rich, layered, and wonderfully complete," declares Galloni. We just sourced a parcel of the recently released, 96-point 2017 at a remarkable price, so fans can stock up, and anyone curious about this beloved style of wine can get a world-class introduction without breaking the bank.

This set from Fèlsina offers a multifaceted tour of classic Tuscan character. In short, everything that makes Fèlsina such a treasured estate is on full display in today's offer.

92JS 92KO 92JG 91V 91WE 91D 90WS

A well-balanced, seductive and lively red with aromas of forest berries, red currants, warm herbs and some crushed peppercorns. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins. Juicy berry character with a lift of spices bringing energy and vitality on the palate and onto the tactile finish. Drink now.

92 points, James Suckling (Jul 2024)

Red berry, dark spice, blue flower and whiffs of botanical herb form the nose on the elegant 2022 Felsina Beradenga. On the smooth, savory palate, supple tannins seamlessly support juicy Morello cherry, raspberry and white pepper before a soothing licorice finish.

92 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Jul 2024)

The 2022 Chianti Classico from Fèlsina is a beautiful young bottle of Chianti, showing its classical pedigree in a deep and precise bouquet of black cherries, red plums, gamebird, bonfire, a superb base of soil, just a touch of cedary oak and a lovely dollop of fresh oregano in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and nicely structured, with a superb core of fruit, excellent soil signature and grip, ripe, moderate tannins and a long, vibrant and impeccably balanced finish. Like all of Fèlsina’s Chiantis, this is made to age long and gracefully, and while approachable today, really deserves at least three to five years in the cellar to properly soften up its tannins and take flight. Fine juice.

92 points, John Gilman, View From The Cellar (Aug 2025)

The 2022 Chianti Classico Berardenga is superb. Rich and deep yet also quite translucent, the 2022 is an archetype of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Black cherry, leather, spice, tobacco, menthol and dried herbs inform this potent, super-classic Chianti Classico. This is beautifully done, especially for the year.

91 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2024)

Aromas of black cherry, pomegranate, fresh figs and top soil create a nose that's tangy, but with depth. Blackberries headline the palate, while undertones of dark chocolate and more earth provide balance. Tannins are firm yet flexible, and acid is vibrant.

91 points, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2024)

At the southeastern end of Chianti Classico, the Fèlsina property spills into the Chianti Colli Senesi zone where, on a clear day you can see all the way to Siena, just 15km away. Harnessing its sunbathed setting, the 2022 is immediate and effusive in its charms. It evokes Maritime pine, scrubby Mediterranean brush and wild yellow broom, building in concentration as it glides fluently across the palate, where rocky minerals meet ripe strawberry. Vibrant, if a bit brisk to finish.

91 points, Michaela Morris, Decanter (Feb 2024)

alking the line between cherry and berry flavors and earth and iron notes, this red is bright and juicy midpalate, firming up on the long finish. Balanced overall, needing a year to knit together. Best from 2026 through 2033. 22,000 cases made, 6,500 cases imported.

2021 Tignanello Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

When the iconic Super Tuscan collectible Tignanello racked up one massive score after another in the 2021 vintage, you could be sure that same unbelievable quality extended across the entire range from Antinori, and the 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchesi Antinori proves it in spades.

"This is one of the big surprises of this tasting and ultimately represents one of the best buys in the entire extended Marchesi Antinori portfolio." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Larner sums it up nicely right there in describing this Sangiovese-based blend that earned 94+ points from her. Made from declassified estate fruit that doesn't make it into the grand vin, this is a true "baby Tignanello" in every sense. Antonio Galloni from Vinous calls it "particularly strong ... a terrific showing," and a pair of 95-point scores from James Suckling and Wine Spectator round out an impressive critical line for a sophisticated Tuscan overachiever.

If you're a Tignanello fan who's put away some of the monumental 2021 grand vin and want to get a glimpse of what it has in store without opening a precious bottle too early, this is your answer. Or, maybe you're a fan of classic Tuscan character who wants to experience some of the magic of Tignanello without the hefty price tag. Either way, the sub-$45 Marchesi Antinori Riserva offers just that opportunity.

95WS 94WA 93V

This ripe style is fresh and harmonious, delivering plum, cherry and boysenberry fruit, with accents of earth, iron and eucalyptus. Supple in texture, with a beautifully integrated structure and long, complex aftertaste. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2043. 29,667 cases made, 5,833 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

This is one of the big surprises of this tasting and ultimately represents one of the best buys in the entire extended Marchesi Antinori portfolio. The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori shares the DNA of Tignanello. It is Sangiovese kissed with small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Of course, the wine is more accessible and open compared to Tignanello, and spiritually, this wine is a Chianti Classico. By that I mean that the elegant minerality of these soils and the sunny flavors of its environs are the determining characteristics. You get wildflower, iris, tart fruit and plum. The wine's enhanced mineral character, with dusty white rock, is what adds lasting complexity and depth.

94+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Mar 2024)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine, despite showing some tightness because of its recent bottling just a week prior to this tasting. Dark fruit, spice, leather and tobacco are layered in a Riserva that exudes tension, energy and sheer power.

2020 Felsina Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

Crafted by one of Chianti Classsico's "flagship estates" according to the Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, these highly rated Felsina selections are priced to deliver top value for Italian wine collectors and Felsina fans, a range of Tuscan treasures from one of the region's most esteemed producers unbeatably priced whether choosing a few favorites or for mixing a case.

Located in the butterfly-shaped Castelnuovo Berardenga subregion in southernmost Chianti Classico, the historic 600-hectare Fattoria di Felsina estate has remained family owned since its purchase by Domenico Poggiali Felsina in 1966, rising to the top of appellation under the direction of Giuseppe Mazzocolin for over four decades and now run by Domenico's son Giovanni Poggiali. Produced from the estate's 95 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards, the fresh and refined 93 pt. 2021 Felsina Chianti Classico Berardenga is described as "a fantastic entry point for the Felsina range" by Jeb Dunnuck, a lush Sangiovese boasting earthy dark fruit and vibrant acidity that "readers should consider buying by the case," according to Vinous critic Galloni. Earning the #22 spot on the Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2023, the rich and sultry 94 pt. 2020 Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva offers soft fruit flavors with "pretty mineral notes and light spice" according to the Wine Advocate's Monica Larner boasting the structure to evolve over the next few decades. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese grown in Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi, Vinous critic Antonio Galloni calls the mineral-driven 96 pt. 2020 Felsina Fontalloro "a sensual, enveloping wine" revealing savory Sangiovese fruit hinting of wild herbs that captures "Sangiovese's untamed side" according to Decanter's Michaela Morris. The lesser known jewel of the Felsina portfolio and a "terrific, terrific value" according to the Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, the silky 95 pt. 2020 Felsina Maestro Raro is a powerful, refined expression of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon "of unusual complexity as well as pedigree" according to critic Galloni built to enjoy over the next decade.

Boasting an "extraordinary ability to convey the essence of variety, place and vintage" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, these top rated Felsina wines reflect the estate's rich legacy as standard bearers in Chianti Classico, meticulously crafting wines of "distinction and elegance" and all delivering outstanding value.

95WA 95WS 95JS

The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia shows beautiful minerality with dusty notes of crushed limestone or flint. This is the wine's special signature, and it shines through in a warm vintage such as this. Rancia also offers an upfront quality of red and purple fruit tones. The 2020 vintage displays pretty concentration and richness with wild cherry and plum, but ultimately the wine leaves you with that elegant mineral sendoff. Rancia will require extra bottle age.

95 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (May 2023)

Intense, with complex flavors of cherry, blackberry, violet, mineral and leafy underbrush, this red is silky and verges on racy. Harmonious and persistent, with a long, resonant aftertaste that echoes red fruit, mineral and savory elements. Best from 2025 through 2045. 4,100 cases made, 1,800 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2023)

A polished and very refined Rancia with sweet berries, cedar and hints of chocolate. Medium body. Fresh and focused. A little reserved at the end. It needs two or three years to come around. Best in 2025.

2021 Caparsa Chianti Classico (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Caparsa remains one of Chianti Classico's under-the- radar gems, a small estate known only to relatively small subset of wine lovers. These new releases are nothing short of captivating." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

We still can't believe our good fortune to have the singularly talented Paolo Cianferoni's Caparsa estate in our direct-import stable. Even more so, we still can't believe these wines are not on everyone's radar, so utterly refined, precise, and authentic are their character and substance. After a recent tasting of the full range of 2021 Classicos, we fell head over heels with no hesitation, and we went all in on this spectacular trio.

The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Caparsino kicks everything off with its pair of 95-point reviews from Decanter and Antonio Galloni, who praises it as "plush and wonderfully deep right out of the gate" making for "a Riserva of uncommon character and distinction." The Caparsino is brought up entirely in concrete tank to give it the purest Sangiovese character possible, something to be desired when the vineyards and fruit are as impeccable as Caparsa's. In contrast to the Caparsino's bright, elegant personality, the 96-point, single-vineyard 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo is "a brooding virile wine," Aged in Stockinger and Mittelberger oak, it boasts an "explosive" profile with "tremendous substance." It's a stunning representation of collectible Chianti Classico that can stand with many wines twice its price. Finally, the DC95 2021 Chianti Classico is "pure drinking pleasure" for a mere song. Few, if any, of the Chiantis we've found in the sub-$30 price range deliver quite the impact and head-turning presence that the 2021 Caparsa does. As Galloni writes, "This is a very serious, hugely overachieving Chianti Classico."

After all, Paolo does everything the hard way, which almost always makes the best wines, and we're quite confident in saying that Caparsa is firmly among the elite producers in the region, even if their production and recognition are dwarfed by many of their larger peers. That also means that these are some of the sharpest, cellar-worthy Tuscan wines in our inventory, so you should have no doubts about going big, as they will remain absolutely thrilling expressions for years and years to come.

95D 93V

A wine with precise violet and iris scents with hints of blackberry at the back, and a long, juicy palate with a minerally finish. Paolo Cianferoni is the model of the grower-producer, with the intimate knowledge of and attachment to the terroir that comes with living the vineyard. He is no slouch in the cellar either, and is not afraid of challenging oenological conventions. His Chianti Classico ‘annata’ ferments with its own yeasts and ages not in oak but in cement vats. Pure drinking pleasure.

95 points, Richard Baudains, Decanter (Feb 2025)

The 2021 Chianti Classico is a powerful wine. Dark, layered and beguiling, the 2021 has so much to offer. Macerated black cherry, licorice, new leather, cloves, incense and blood orange build as the 2021 opens in the glass. This is a very serious, hugely overachieving Chianti Classico from proprietor Paolo Cianferoni.

2021 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

Described as a "gem of a producer" by Decanter, Podere Le Cinciole may well be the ultimate insider's Tuscan estate, these high scoring, under the radar selections expressing the estate's exceptional "golden" terroir in Chianti Classico's high altitude terrain and quietly gaining the lesser known Le Cinciole a reputation among critics including Antonio Galloni of Vinous as "one of the leading estates in all of Italy," each of these artisan-crafted red wines also among the region's top values.

Situated on a biodiverse 30-hectare hilltop estate that includes an olive grove of 1,000 trees, Le Cinciole owners Luca Orsini and Valeria Vigano produce their measured, thoughtful wines from 11-hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Conca d'Oro, the amphitheater-shaped "golden basin" considered the Grand Cru of the region, planted in galestro soils of clay and schist ranging from 400 to 450 meters above sea level at one of the highest elevations in the region. Described as "one of the most distinctive wines in the appellation" by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, the remarkably expressive 93 pt. 2019 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico and 92 pt. 2020 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico entry level cuvees were crafted from 100% Sangiovese and aged for 12 months in medium French oak barrels and a year in concrete before bottling, yielding seductive, earthy fruit and elegant tannins and described as "a perennial overperformer" by Decanter's Michaela Morris that's not to be missed. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese and aged well beyond the minimum requirement of 30 months for Chianti Classico's elite Gran Selezione category, Decanter critic Morris named the elegant 96 pt. 2016 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi one of her Top 10 wines of 2021, its luscious core of rich Sangiovese fruit and balanced mineral driven acidity boasting "quite a wow factor," while Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate describes the "bold" 95 pt. 2018 Gran Selezione Aluigi as having "a lovely defined character" and Antonio Galloni of Vinous praises the 96 pt. 2019 Gran Selezione Aluigi as setting the gold standard for the classification, exclaiming "what a gorgeous wine this is." A deeply layered blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Syrah and Merlot, the exquisite 95 pt. 2016 Le Cinciole Camalaione is "absolutely gorgeous" according to critic Galloni, boasting lush dark fruits with remarkable persistence and balanced acidity, while the powerful 94 pt. 2017 Le Cinciole Camalaione "packs a huge punch" and the enticing 96 pt. 2018 Le Cinciole Camalaione is "a knockout," describing the atypical blend as offering "stunning depth and textural intensity." Sourced from 100% Sangiovese grown in a single vineyard at the estate's highest elevation, Antonio Galloni calls the flagship 97 pt. 2017 Le Cinciole Petresco "breathtaking" while the 98 pt. 2019 Le Cinciole Petresco boasts "notable depth and intensity," and like all Le Cinciole's top cuvees, both are built to deliver pleasurable drinking over the next decade and beyond.

While Panzano and the Conca D'Oro have gained notoriety among collectors as the home to high profile producers like Fontodi, Le Cinciole's top scoring wines remain among Tuscany's hidden treasures, still seeming "to fly under the radar" according to Antonio Galloni and a rare opportunity for lovers and collectors of bold Tuscan reds to "strike gold" and scoop up a stash of Le Cinciole's purely irresistible wines at unbeatable prices.

The 2021 Chianti Classico is a fabulous introduction to this range from Le Cinciole. Brisk acids and veins of tannin give the 2021 its shape and plenty of overall energy. Expressive floral and savory overtones lend tons of character. The 2021 was vinified in cement and aged in cask for a year, followed by a year in cement. This mid-weight Chianti Classico is a winner.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2024)

A juicy, vivid and crunchy Chianti Classico expressing aromas of strawberries, raspberries and mild spices, following through to a medium body with fine tannins. Succulent and crisp with sour cherry character in the mouthwatering finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

"Two thousand twenty-one is the single greatest young vintage I have ever tasted in Chianti Classico. Period. Full stop." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

There you have it. We couldn't have said it better ourselves. This epic Tuscan vintage keeps delivering the good in every denominacion across the region, but it truly seems like Chianti Classico hit the highest heights of all with "majestic wines endowed with striking aromatics, layered fruit and all the energy that is such a signature of the appellation." We've seen countless head-turning standouts come through already (with more to come soon), and today we're highlighted three of our favorites in the sub-$25 price tier.

Leading off, our direct-import star Le Cinciole has, to no one's surprise, delivered incredible bang for the buck in their "juicy, vivid, and crunchy" entry-level value star. Ricasoli's 2021 Brolio is the perfect candidate for your everyday rotation with its "immediately light and bright personality," and finally, Fonterutoli's 2021 delivers a double-93-point powerhouse expression, "darker, more powerful and concentrated than your standard entry-level Chianti Classico" according to Monica Larner.

No matter your style preference, Chianti Classico's extraordinary 2021 vintage has the perfect fit at prices that make it easy to stock up big.

91JS 90WA 90JD

Lovely sweet berry and orange zest aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with crunchy fruit and a stony undertone. A year more of bottle age will make it even better.

91 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

Showing an immediately light and bright personality, the 2021 Chianti Classico Brolio is an easy blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Colorino. It boasts an attractive, punchy approach with plenty of cherry, blue flower and pressed violet, followed by subtle mineral shadings. The wine is simple, but classic. This is an ample production of 490,000 bottles.

90 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Brolio is a bright ruby color and is fresh and inviting with aromas of fresh red cherry, orange peel, fresh herbs, and wet stones. Bright and refreshing, the palate is medium-bodied, with ultrafine tannins, a mineral-toned texture, and a clean finish. It is a very nice entry wine that I would prefer to drink now for its snappy refreshment, although it should hold up well over the coming 4-6 years.

Located 10 miles northeast of Siena, Ricasoli's Castello di Brolio is unquestionably THE most important landmark in the greater Chianti region. Staggering in every since of the word, the country castle of Brolio – with its gardens and historic palace – stands as a reminder of this family's importance to Chianti, Tuscany and the myriad wines of this region. It was on this site – destroyed and rebuilt over the ages as wars raged between Siena and Florence – where Baron Bettino Ricasoli, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy, created the Chianti recipe. His blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo and 15% Malvasia Bianca was updated by Bettino Ricasoli – the "Iron Baron" – who, at the age of 20, began the first great revival for his family's wines and the entire region. His work is widely defined as a Risorgimento in Italian winemaking; by 1867 Italy earned its first gold medal at the Paris Exposition – earned by the Brolio Chianti. And in 1872, Chianti – the zone – was officially born. Barone Ricasoli's Castello di Brolio Chianti established the zone, subsequently setting the Classico borders; today, it's the standard-bearer for the Gran Selezione classification. The 2013 stopped me in my tracks. You're gonna want that.

A supple, fluid red marked by flavors of macerated cherry, raspberry and boysenberry. Well-structured, with flashes of graphite and tobacco as this builds to the long, compact finish. All the components are there, this just needs time. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2042. 6,100 cases made, 4,453 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2023)

#24 - Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2023

Aromas of cherry chocolate, dried orange peel, rose petals and nutmeg on the nose, following through to a medium body with crunchy tannins and polished texture. Hints of fresh cherries and dried flowers with crushed stone character at the end. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Jul 2023)

Magenta with a tinge of purple, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers a darker mineral profile in its notes of graphite, blackberry, lavender, and sweet sage. Full-bodied, it has wonderful length, and its more primary fruit profile weaves seamlessly through its mineral-tinged backbone and mouthwatering finish. Although it’s not a bright wine in terms of its acidity, it’s certainly fresh and is a very attractive wine from this vintage with the potential to cruise over the next 10- 12 years.

92 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2024)

From the warmer, south-facing sites of the Castelnuovo Berardenga-based estate, this Riserva spends 12 months in small French oak and includes 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, which together lend coffee and intense dark fruits to the fragrant fresh and dried cherries courtesy of the Sangiovese. A herbal note combines with soft, chalky tannins and good acidity, with licks of wood, cream and zingy raspberry on the long finish. Still quite closed, this would benefit from a bit more time before opening.

The 2022 Chianti Rufina Riserva is soft, open-knit and very easy to like. Plush contours wrap around a core of red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, spice and rose petal. Floral overtones pull it all together on the finish.

90 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2025)

93JS 92V 91WA

A compact and focused red with spiced cherries, raspberries, red licorice, iodine and crushed stones on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with smoothly polished tannins framing the vivid fruit. Long and balanced. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Jul 2025)

The 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva is classic Fèlsina to the core. A blast of dark plum, game, incense, licorice, tobacco, and scorched earth makes a strong opening statement. Bold and virile in bearing, the 2022 Riserva packs a pretty serious punch. I would give it a few years to soften, as the tannins are formidable today. This is impeccably done. There are many notable wines in this range, but for price, value, and accessibility, the Riserva is pretty hard to beat. The 2022 spent 18 months in 500-liter barrels.

92+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2025)

Smoky bacon fat overtones complement the cherry, bitter almond and sanguine flavors in this sinewy red. Feels open, yet with a firm grip of tannins in the end. Long, so give this a few more years in bottle. Best from 2028 through 2042. 4,200 cases made.

There's arguably no name more important to the history of Chianti Classico wine than Ricasoli. After all, it was one Bettino Ricasoli, an accomplished Italian statesman and baron, who first devised what would become the Chianti "recipe" in the mid-1800s. That is to say, he was the first to turn the region's focus to Sangiovese, where it has remained ever since.

Now his descendant Francesco Ricasoli runs the family's iconic Castello di Brolio property from which the Chianti category was born, and he has done as much as anyone in guiding the Chianti Classico DOCG into its next era, one where quality and style are rigorously maintained through new rules for production and labeling. The most important of these new steps has been the establishment of the Gran Selezione classification and its attendant regional designations or UGAs. Ricasoli's estate vineyards provide some of the best qualitative expressions of the Gaiole UGA while exemplifying the visionary genius behind the new classification system.

The 2021s take full advantage of this generational benchmark vintage, with a trio of critically acclaimed standouts. The 97-point Gaiole Colledila landed on last year's Wine Spectator Top 100 list. This cru is classic clay-limestone terroir for Sangiovese, resulting in a wine that "shows superb balance and grace, with the best yet to come." The Gaiole Ceniprimo, from sand and silt soils, takes on a fleshier fruit profile from its micro-climate, but the structured tannins suggest cellaring will be immensely beneficial. Finally, the WA97 Gaiole Roncicone "offers energy and a great sense of focus." More linear, refined, and reticent than its stablemates, this wine represents the new era of collectible Chianti Classico at its finest.

As prices for Italy's most renowned collectible wines continue to rise, we expect the Gran Seleziones to take a big step forward in this space, thanks to their skyrocketing quality and relatively affordable prices, with iconic estates like Ricasoli leading the way.

This is so classy, with finesse and sensitivity that are so mesmerizing. It’s delicate and almost weightless, with a beautiful and energetic fruit and acid balance. It’s medium-bodied and extremely long. Medium chewy. It goes on and on. Dark cherries, bark and lots of flowers in the finish. Drinkable now, but better in two or three years and beyond.

97 points, James Suckling (Apr 2024)

Ricasoli's flagship wine is a blend of grapes from vineyards in Gaiole on the main soil types of Chianti Classico: macigno (sandstone), galestro and alberese. The fruit is vinified in stainless steel and aged for 22 months in tonneaux, 30% new. Subtle dark cherry and spiced plum notes emerge, followed in the mouth by a gloriously vertical structure where the succulent fruit floats and the zesty edges vibrate with energy. The fruit has wonderful sapidity, and the tannins are supportive but play a background role. Absolute class.

96 points, James Button, Decanter (Jul 2024)

Now identified by the Gaiole subregion on the back label, the Barone Ricasoli 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Gaiole Castello di Brolio reveals a beautiful bouquet that is packed tight with carefully ripened fruit. There is a sweet spot in terms of aromas with a hint of candied cherry that is folded into iris root, dried mint and spice. This generous Sangiovese ends with lasting freshness.

A core of ripe cherry, plum and pomegranate pervades this vibrant, complex red. A balanced version, with a firm grip on the finish complementing its fresh acidity. The 2021 is a stellar wine, especially with a bit of air.

This red is highlighted by juicy black cherry and blackberry flavors, with earth and iron accents. Firms up on the lively, persistent finish. Sangiovese, Colorino and Canaiolo. Drink now through 2028. 3,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

With vineyards at various elevations in Castellina, Capraia uses parcels at lower altitudes of 300 metres to craft the estate’s annata. It's deeply coloured – perhaps owing to the small percentage of Colorino. Fresh and youthful, dark cherry aromas are accented by anise, cinnamon and allspice. The Barone Ricasoli 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Gaiole Colledilà opens to dark fruit, but perhaps more significantly, you get a slate-like mineral note that adds focus. That mineral note appears in all these beautiful Gran Selezione wines from vintner Francesco Ricasoli, but in the case of this bottle, it adds a dark or slightly brooding personality. The finish is absolutely savory and salty.

95WA 94JS 93D

In the bottle with the black label, the organic Dievole 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna di Sessina is a real beauty that offers a twofold delivery of elegance and power in this vintage. There are plenty of black fruit aromas that slide delicately into crushed stone, spice and grilled herb. This estate opts for fermentation in cement and quick oak aging lasting about one year. These steps insure intact primary flavors, and the wine is characterized by energy and lively aromas. Production is 9,000 bottles.

95 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

Polished and pretty nose of dried flowers, cloves, mocha, dried cherries and chocolate orange. It’s medium-bodied with tight-grained tannins. Lovely freshness and balance, with a lengthy and elegant finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

94 points, James Suckling (Apr 2023)

Sessina is a south-facing 5.5-hectare vineyard on Macigno (sandstone soil) but with a vein of limestone running through it. It shines in the fresh 2019 vintage – it's the best bottling of this wine that I have tried. Vibrantly scented with mint, sage and a hint of chocolate. The dark plum core is ripe yet crunchy, with tannins which are smoothly textured and tug in the right places. This shows aromas of red and dark berries, chocolate, dried flowers and spices, following through to a medium body with crunchy, powdery tannins and juicy acidity. Tense and flavorful with good concentration. Drink now or hold.

2020 Querciabella Chianti Classico (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

93JD 93JS 92V 92WE 92D

The 2020 Chianti Classico is impressive and pure, with ripe black cherry, a hint of blue fruit, violets, and sweet herbs. It is medium to full-bodied, with supple fruit throughout, fine grained tannins, and a polished feel. It displays fresh acidity without any harsh edges, but it is mouthwatering and compels returning for more. This beautiful wine from Querciabella is drinking well now, and I imagine will continue to improve over the coming decade or more.

93 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2023)

Pure fruit on the nose, with rose hips, cherries, blueberries, lemon leaves and dried flowers. Medium-bodied with tangy acidity and firm tannins. Vibrant and elegant, with such purity of fruit. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Jun 2022)

The 2020 Chianti Classico is bright, fresh and nicely lifted, with terrific precision and energy lending quite a bit of character. Bright red Sangiovese fruit, spice and a touch of blood orange are front and center. Even so, the 2020 appears to still be recovering from its bottling. That should not be an issue in another 6-12 months' time. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from parcel in Greve's Lamole district.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2022)

A delightfully tart nose is full of Rainier cherries and dried cranberries, with undertones of minerality and herbaceousness. The palate runs with the cherries and adds oranges to the mix, with a latent heat and a thrilling amount of acidity elevating a minty freshness through the finish.

92 points, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast (Nov 2023)

With an annual production of approximately 150,000 bottles, this is Querciabella’s calling card – and an impressive one at that. It also gives an incisive panoramic shot of the Chianti Classico region as it's a blend of estate vineyards in three different subzones. Bright and fresh, the 2020 annata emerges energetically out of the glass with exuberant and pure red cherry and currants. It gains intrigue with stylish touches of mocha, tarragon and truffles. It's full and vigorous yet light on its feet thanks to radiant acidity, while well-formed tannins lend just the right amount of chew. As suave as it is characterful.

Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

The earthy, spicy nose pops with aromas of damp soil, pepper, graphite and black cherry. Tangy, tart berries define the palate, while a squeeze of citrus and abundant salinity create a bouncy texture. Acid sings overhead.

2021 Brolio by Ricasoli Chianti Riserva (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

93WE 93JS 92WA 92V 92D 91WS

The nose has both the tang of black cherries and blackberries and the texture of coffee grinds, pepper and earth. The mouthfilling palate stays balanced between tart and sweet berries and tangy, peppery earthiness, all set aflame by fiery acid but held in careful balance by decisive tannins.

93 points, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2024)

Sweet spices, savory plums, cherries, dried citrus and minerals on the nose. Fine-grained on the palate, with a medium to full body and a convincing amount of tannins. Long and fresh. Drinkable now, but better in one more year.

93 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Aug 2024)

In the bottle with the black label, the Barone Ricasoli 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio has ripe fruit, toasted spice and a hint of scorched earth. Made with all Sangiovese, the wine presents mid-weight intensity with an intense bouquet that is driven by savory notes and a hint of something charred, such as dustings of campfire ash.

92 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jul 2024)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio is a gorgeous, complex wine. Dark cherry, plum, leather, licorice, lavender and graphite bring out the darker side of Sangiovese in this mysterious, introspective Riserva. A wine of dynamic energy and substance, the 2021 is very nicely done.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2024)

A cellar selection from parcels throughout Ricasoli’s 235 hectares in Gaiole, this Riserva gives a panoramic view of the Brolio estate. Each plot is fermented separately in stainless steel, matured in diverse types of wood, and assembled after ageing. The nose is focused and forthcoming, and offers a balanced mix of red cherry and violet with whiffs of Mediterranean herbs, tobacco and vanilla. Fine-grained tannins are firmly stitched around the lush plum core, while juicy acidity carries the bitter orange finish.

92 points, Michaela Morris, Decanter (Feb 2024)

Infused with cherry, strawberry, iron and spice flavors, this bright red is also solidly built. Smooth in texture, nimble and intense, finishing with echoes of red fruit and dusty tannins. Best from 2026 through 2040. 3,500 cases made, 650 cases imported.
