I began using B21 about 2 years ago. Wish I had found them sooner. They represent about 70% to 80 % of my liquor buys. Only the odd things are purchased elsewhere. Once you use them you will be hooked. Inventory, professional staff, quick shipping and competative pricing are what I really appreciate. Try them, you have nothing to lose and much to gain.

2022 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge (750ml)

The Avril family, their renowned parcels planted adjacent to the ruins of the old papal towers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, have been consistently bottling brilliant wines for decades. Among my very favorites – my personal collection spans multiple vintages – these are wines of unmistakable breed and character; a complete joy to experience. Originally established in the 18th century, their primary parcel is augmented by seventeen old vine plots throughout the appellation, adding further dimension to a wine already at the very highest levels of quality. Over the last few vintages, my notes indicate ever improved character. Paul-Vincent has bottled even more in a long line of rock stars. Draconian selections followed daily passes through each of his parcels, painstakingly clipping each vine for nothing but the very finest berries.

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is showing beautifully, with the sun-kissed style of the vintage yet more depth and density than most in the vintage. Blackberries, Provençal garrigue, spice, and saddle leather all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with the classic elegance of the estate in its medium to full-bodied, layered, multi-dimensional style. It's one of the wines of the vintage and will have two decades of longevity.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

Despite a hailstorm that destroyed approximately one-third of the crop this year, Paul-Vincent Avril managed to produce a wine with the same grape proportions as in previous years, thanks to his vineyard's diverse and fragmented nature. So, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos des Papes reveals a delicate, aromatic bouquet of peony, gooseberry, lilac, flowers and cherries mingled with delicate notes of fennel and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, sappy and layered, it's perfectly textured with velvety, delicate tannins enhanced by bright acids and a long, ethereal finish. Although the Mourvèdre is slightly dominant at this stage, this wine is unquestionably poised for great aging potential.

97 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Sep 2024)

The alluring 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape won me over in a heartbeat. Vivid licorice, sage, blueberry, lavender, red and black cherry as well as crushed flowers hail from the glass. Full-bodied and intense, the 2022 packs ample flavor concentration yet always maintains balance through lifting freshness. Polished tannins neatly structure this ambitious 2022 that has the potential to age gracefully for at least two decades.

96+ points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2024)

A richly styled, opulent Châteauneuf that offers a streamlined cascade of ripe cherry, licorice root and toasted chestnut. Mineral energy keeps this powering long distance, with a smoldering foundation of iron. Starts off silky in feel, with a caressing texture quickly firmed up by fine tannins that hold real power. Hints of wet soil and baking spices detail the long, winding finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2026 through 2042.

96 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Jan 2025)

A silky, textural and harmonious red with notes of dark cherries, fresh blackberries, dried thyme, currants and some mild spices. It's medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Elegant and graceful, silky and bright. Fresh center palate with plenty of vitality and a caressing texture. Precise and harmonious with a pure expression of fruit at the center and a vibrant, spicy finish. Drink or hold.

96 points, James Suckling (Apr 2024)

A touch less Mourvèdre this year, but not enough to change the profile of the wine, which is fairly classic albeit pretty bombastic in 2022. Raspberry and black cherry, ripe and exuberant. Full but not massive, the alcohol is present, slightly warming the finish. Tannins are a little grainy, so I would give this time to settle before broaching. Succulent and juicy, with a touch of liquorice. Vincent Avril believes the wine could close down quite early on. So drink young, or (even better) wait until 2030. All destemmed, aged in old foudres.

2015 Xavier Vignon Cuvee Anonyme (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

With such shockingly delicious cuvees as his 2007 Anonyme – Vignon's debut wine under his own label – you and I came to know the genius behind so many of the Rhone’s greatest bottlings (that was my first offer to you, way back in 2014). As sole winemaker for Xavier Vins, Vignon also consults for such luminaries as Raymond Usseglio, Marcoux, Grand Veneur and a host of others.

Alas, as with so many upstarts, Xavier Vins' huge notoriety (Parker & Dunnuck scores through the roof) hindered supply. Complicating matters, Xavier has quite a unique winemaking style; vinification periods, combined with bottle aging can lead to wines being held back five or six years before reaching the market. Other than Henri Bonneau – with his Cuvee Celestins – no other winemaker in the Valley – that I know of – produces wines in this manner.

The wines, however, are worth the minor headaches; patience pays big dividends when it comes to Xavier's wines. Moreover, because he doesn't actually own an estate – playing dual roles as oenologist and negociant – his overhead is nominal. So the wines we're enjoying are doubly impressive; powerful, deeply complex, aged to perfection – and insanely underpriced.

96JD 94WA

The inky colored 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Anonyme is a serious winner in the vintage. A blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre and the rest Counoise, Vaccarèse and Muscardin, it offers a huge nose of blackberry jam, garrigue, crushed violets, and incense. Ripe, unctuous and opulent, yet not over the top, it reminds me of the Trois Source cuvée from Vieille Julienne. This is a smoking good release that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and shine for over a decade.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2017)

Xavier Vignon is one of the Rhône's leading winemaking consultants, and so it's no surprise he had access to some great fruit for his 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme. Tellingly, the blend entirely omits Syrah, containing 60% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, 8% Counoise, 4% Vaccarèse and 3% Muscardin. Floral notes and ripe cherries appear along licorice and vanilla (one-fourth of the wine was matured in new barriques), yet this is no drink-now version of CdP. This full-bodied wine boasts broad shoulders, a plush, creamy center and a muscular finish loaded with ripe tannins and spice. Give it a few years to mellow, and drink it over the next 15.

The NV Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve XV XVI XVII comes primarily from the magical 2016 vintage with smaller amounts from 2015 and 2017. It offers an extraordinary nose of blackcurrants, ground pepper, garrigue, and crushed violets. Rich, full-bodied, and incredibly seamless, with a stacked mid-palate, this is Châteauneuf Du Pape brilliance all the way. It’s terrific today yet will keep for 15+ years.

2022 Domaine Durieu Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Lucile Avril (750ml)

Domaine Durieu has been one of our most successful and enduring direct-import relationships over the past several years, with the flagship Cuvée Lucile Avril reaching all-time best seller status at B-21. We recently tasted the 2022 with François Durieu earlier this year, and it more than met our expectations. Now, a brand new, glowing 97-point review from James Suckling's senior Rhône critic puts the exclamation point on another stunning rendition that picks up right where Durieu's previous showstoppers left off.

"A great masterpiece of elegance and finesse." - Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com

"With medium to full body, a beautifully textured mouthfeel, and ripe tannins ... [it] brings a more classic, broad, textured profile," according to Jeb Dunnuck. In other words, the 2022 Lucile Avril is a crystal clear expression of Durieu's signature winemaking style, with an emphasis on balance and freshness (he uses no oak on any of his cuvées). It bears repeating, this wine is always one of our top-selling items in the category, so our legions of Durieu fans are in for a true classic that is, once again, one of the sharpest buys of the vintage at our domaine-direct pricing.

A great masterpiece of elegance and finesse, with a cornucopia of wild herb, dried flower and red berry aromas. Huge concentration and power, but it still moves very gracefully on the full-bodied palate. A stunningly long, pure and refined finish that doesn’t want to let go. Drink or hold.

The Avril family, their renowned parcels planted adjacent to the ruins of the old papal towers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, have been consistently bottling brilliant wines for decades. Among my very favorites – my personal collection spans multiple vintages – these are wines of unmistakable breed and character; their thrilling depth of sappy Grenache fruit a complete joy to experience. Originally established in the 18th century, their primary parcel is augmented by seventeen old vine plots throughout the appellation, adding further dimension to a wine already at the very highest levels of quality. While Grenache remains their focus, they have slightly elevated their attention to Syrah and Mourvedre over the last few vintages; my notes indicate ever improved character. 2017 will prove this to be true; the final blend to be 45% Grenache, 40 Mourvedre, balanced off with Syrah.

Paul-Vincent has bottled yet another in a long line of rock stars. Draconian selections followed daily passes through each of his parcels, painstakingly clipping each vine for nothing but the very finest berries.

98JD 96WA

One of the strongest wines in the vintage is the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Vincent Avril. This beauty has everything you could ask for. As with the 2018, the blend is heavily shifted toward Mourvèdre, and it offers a mammoth bouquet of black cherries, graphite, cured meats, Asian spices, and assorted garrigue-like nuances. Deep, full-bodied, and concentrated, it stays straight and focused on the palate (whereas the 2016 is more expansive and voluptuous), with a stacked mid-palate, ripe, silky tannins, and fabulous length. You’re going to want bottles of this in the cellar, and comparing the 2007, 2010, 2016, and 2017 over the coming two decades is going to be a treat.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Aug 2019)

As predicted last year by Paul-Vincent Avril, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 45% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre, about 10% Syrah and the rest other permitted varieties. It boasts a cool, fresh nose of strawberries, cola and tree bark, yet it's full-bodied and tannic on the palate. Dense and chewy, albeit with a mouthwatering sense of freshness, this will need a few years to relax and unwind, but it looks very promising.

Elegant, stunning and approachable, with seductive aromatics of smoked incense and red tea, plus floral high notes, followed by a well of cassis, licorice and red currant coated in graphite. Dusty in feel, with fine-grained tannins bringing structure and textural complexity. An iron element lingers on the very long finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2035.

96 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Nov 2023)

Cherries, raspberries and truffles appear on the nose of the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape, which weighs in at 15.1% alcohol. Showing ample concentration and length, this medium to full-bodied effort isn't quite as well endowed as the 2022, but it's still a gorgeous wine, framed by silky tannins and finishing with bright, pomegranate-like fruit.

95 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

One of the standouts in the vintage is the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a ripe, round, medium to full-bodied 2021 offering a beautiful array of black cherry and darker berry fruits, ample Provençal spice, and dried flower nuances. Wonderfully textured and balanced, with ripe tannins, as usual, Vincent has made one of the wines of the vintage. This will evolve gracefully for 15+ years.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2023)

Defined raspberry and redcurrant fruits, some woody spices in the background. Quite a rounded, fluid style, the acidity is really quite marked this year. Tannins are gentle, and it finishes on raspberry and redcurrant coulis. There's a silky touch on the palate. It's built around the acidity, the tannins are just gently sandy. Good sense of purity, quite a Burgundian vintage. Less Grenache in the blend this year as it was particularly hit by the frost.

95 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Sep 2022)

The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made with slightly more Grenache and less Syrah than previous vintages. Intermixing aromas of red and black fruits, dried herbs, white pepper and crushed rocks, this 2021 shows slightly less intensity than either the 2020 or 2019. Full-bodied, elegant and framed by smooth tannins, it is well-balanced by fresh acidity and closes with a savory finish.

94 points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2023)

A perfumed nose of cherries, dark berries, baking spices, violets, licorice and some incense as well. It's medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. It's well-balanced with finesse and harmony. Crunchy and fresh with a velvety texture and great drinkability. Juicy, precise finish with excellent length. Drink or hold.

2020 Domaine Giraud Tradition (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Domaine Giraud is a relative newcomer in the Southern Rhone, crafting its first wine in 1974 from 4 hectares of rented vines and producing its first estate cuvee in 1998 under second generation siblings Marie and Francois Giraud. Spanning over 17 hectares spread over 64 separate parcels across the appellation, Giraud's estate owned vineyards are planted with vines averaging 60-80 years of age in a diverse mix of pebble, sand, clay, and limestone soils, each parcel farmed organically with minimal treatments and managed manually from harvesting to sorting.

Sourced primarily from old-vine Grenache including parcels in Les Gallimardes and La Crau, the elegant 2020 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition Rouge is a blend of 80% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre aged for 18 months in cement vats and 15% Syrah matured in used Bordeaux barriques and bottled without filtering or fining, crafted in a vineyard-driven style with "relatively simple, unadorned winemaking" according to Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski with fine-grained tannins that frame the intense, luscious fruit and predict a long and satisfying evolution in the cellar.

A small-production cuvee that wasn't produced at all in 2021 due to frost damage, the enticing 95-point 2020 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Gallimardes Rouge comes from a terroir-expressive vintage "producing athletic, elegant wines of intensity and panache" according to Decanter's Matt Walls, an under-the-radar gem priced far below the region's higher profile estates and expertly crafted to reward savvy collectors with over a decade of pleasurable drinking ahead.

93WS 93JS 92JD 91V

Perfumed and floral, with alluring high-toned cherry pie and raspberry tart interwoven with warm earth, licorice root and a refined iron mineral streak. The structure sneaks up on the palate, cleaning up the finish and driving good length. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2032. 350 cases imported.

93 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Dec 2022)

A fruity nose with notes of strawberries, raspberries, cured meat, bark and peppercorns. It’s full-bodied with creamy tannins. Well-balanced and structured. Layered with freshness and vivacity on the mid-palate and a focused, salivating finish with excellent length. From organically grown grapes. 80% grenache, 15% syrah and 5% mourvedre. Unfiltered. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

Leading off the 2020 Châteauneuf du Papes, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape from Giraud is 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 5% Mourvedre. It shows the pure, supple, charming style of the vintage perfectly and is medium to full-bodied, has soft tannins, lots of darker berry fruits, notes of sappy garrigue and pepper, and outstanding length. A quintessential Châteauneuf du Pape, it will continue drinking well for 10-12 years.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2022)

Stating 15.5% alcohol on the label, the modern-styled 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tradition is a blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre. Pale ruby-colored, swirling the glass unveils aromas of cooked red and black fruits, crème de cassis and cloves. Showcasing slightly coarse tannins, this full-bodied red maintains a good level of freshness through crisp acidity.

"... yet another outstanding red Beaucastel with the potential to match or even outperform the delicious 2022." - Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous

One of the most anticipated Rhône releases in any vintage is Beaucastel's reference-point Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the 97-point 2023 delivers everything we expect from this iconic estate. The warm, dry growing season provided optimal conditions for all the estate's varietals to excel and the finished wine is classic Beaucastel in all respects. Jeb Dunnuck notes, "It has the purity, medium to full-bodied richness, and ripe, yet still fresh and lively style of the vintage and brings plenty of mid-palate depth, sweet tannins, and a great finish." The year saw a higher-than-usual Mourvedre content in the blend, so you can count on this rendition to cruise in the cellar, but the freshness and vibrancy of the Grenache components (with help of the highly aromatic Terret Nori, Vaccarese, and Muscardin) make it a true charmer right out of the gate. James Suckling's Rhône critic Stuart Pigott declares it "full-bodied but with a lightness of touch. Then the power and stony intensity pour over you in a giant wave. The freshness is extraordinary for this hot and dry vintage." In other words, one of France's leading wine estates hit another home run, and collectors can add this superb rendition to their cellars for a razor-sharp price.

While you wait for the Châteauneuf to come around, you can also stock up on the 2023 Coudoulet de Beaucastel. Reflecting its well-earned reputation as "the Baby Beaucastel," the 2023 Coudoulet de Beaucastel is a solidly built, age-worthy Côtes-du-Rhône that takes the category a step up in terms of quality, character, and pedigree – the Coudoulet vines lie just on the "wrong side" of the road from Beaucastel's official Châteauneuf parcels, so the moniker isn't just a trope. Soils, micro-climates, and vine heritage are all similar, so the Coudoulet wine always offers glimpses of its world-class terroir. This JS93 "solid, focused, juicy and poised wine" is picture-perfect introduction to the vintage at Beaucastel.

Finally, as icing on the cake, serious collectors shouldn't miss a chance to add a monumental vintage of the legendary Hommage à Jacques Perrin to their cellars at unbeatable pricing. The 2022 Hommage is a triple 98-point masterpiece and collectible cornerstone that sets the bar for the appellation and the vintage. "Combining mind-boggling intensity with impressive verticality, the full-bodied 2022 is one of the wines of the vintage," notes Nicolas Greinacher of Vinous. Yohan Castaing's own 98-point Wine Advocate review likewise calls it "a spectacular and immense wine ... [and] a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts." With the amply seductive style of the vintage, it's also likely to give off serious fireworks right now if you're the impatient type. Either way, this is a no-brainer opportunity for anyone who's serious about the world's greatest collectible wines.

At every stage of the hierarchy and every price tier, Beaucastel proves its mettle time and time again, and these latest releases are unequivocal gems for any fan of Southern Rhône's best wines.

97JS 96JD 96D

Dense licorice and forest berry aromas mask the deep tannin structure of this Chateauneuf-du-Pape masterpiece. Full-bodied but with a lightness of touch. Then the power and stony intensity pour over you in a giant wave. The freshness is extraordinary for this hot and dry vintage. Serious tannins in the very long, compact and refined finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

97 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (Apr 2025)

The estate lost some Grenache due to shatter, so the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape is based on 40% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 10% Counoise, 10% Syrah, and the rest a mix of permitted varieties. It was all destemmed except for the Syrah and brought up in foudre. The higher Mourvèdre component gives it a more serious, focused style than most in the vintage, and it has darker blackberry fruits intermixed with roasted herbs, spring flowers, violets, and some meaty nuances on the nose. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a deep, pure, layered mouthfeel, it has ripe, velvety, yet building tannins and a great finish. Another beautiful vintage for this cuvée, it has the approachable style of the vintage yet brings more than enough density and concentration to evolve for 30 years. Drink 2025-2054.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2025)

A tasting of the constituent parts this year, so this is a provisional score. The Terret Noir, Muscardin and Vaccarèse were fermented together; they provide the more fragrant top notes, bright and attractive if not deep. The Cinsault was perfumed and fresh, with fine tannins. The Counoise was more savoury, with more depth and tannin; tense and saline, and spicy thanks to 50% whole-bunch fermentation. The Grenache was soft and supple, fairly dark in colour, quite structured, with impressive freshness, tannins and acidity. The Syrah was deep, intense, black-fruited and peppery – quite potent in alcohol, with intense tannins. The Mourvèdre will be 30% of the blend, contributing mouthcoating, deep and succulent tannins, plenty of flesh and quite high alcohol. The overall impression is a deliciously rich and ripe Beaucastel, not as structured as the 2022, that is likely to score around 95-96 once blended and bottled.

2023 Famille Isabel Ferrando Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

97JD 96D

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc is flat-out great. A blend of 70% Clairette and 30% Roussanne brought up in a mix of foudre and smaller concrete vessels, its medium gold hue is followed by a sensational perfume of stone fruits, dried pineapple, white flowers, and crushed stone. This carries to a medium to full-bodied white with an elegant, layered mouthfeel, perfectly integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's approachable today yet will benefit from a year or two of bottle age and keep for well over a decade. If you get a chance, don't miss this! There are a tiny 250 cases made.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

This is a very powerful white Châteauneuf – textural and driving, with intensity and freshness. The oak is mostly present in texture and shape. It’s very ripe but not overdone; the alcohol is in balance and the driving acidity will propel it forward; it’s a savoury, saline style that will age well. Grown in lieu-dit Les Serres, mostly galets roulés with sand. Fermented in foudre, demi-muid and concrete eggs; aged in foudre and concrete egg for six months.

Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

96JD 94WA 94V 94WS #10 Top 100

Reminding me of the 2020, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is based on 60% Grenache, 16% each Mourvèdre and Cinsault, and the rest Syrah. Its medium ruby hue is followed by a gorgeous perfume of black raspberries, white pepper, Provençal garrigue, and crushed stone-like minerality. With medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, and ripe, polished, yet building tannins, it's an absolute gem in the vintage that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise over the following decade or more.

96+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

Less exuberant than the F601, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Famille Isabel Ferrando is a blend of 60% Grenache Noir, 16% Mourvèdre, 16% Cinsault and 8% Syrah. It exhales a complex, shy bouquet of dark berries, spices, licorice, violet and dark cherries. Medium-bodied, fleshy and round with a textured mid-palate, it's enrobing and suave with structured tannins that segue into a long, penetrating and racy finish with lots of vertical energy. It matured for 18 months in a combination of foudres (34%), concrete tank (33%) and terracotta jars (33%).

94 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Sep 2024)

The inviting 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is at eye level with the gorgeous 2020. Showcasing ripe forest strawberry, black cherry, licorice, crushed violet and licorice, the 2022 is simply alluring. Ripe and polished tannins provide good structure and lay a solid foundation for extended bottle-aging. This year’s blend is 65% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 12% Mourvèdre and 8% Syrah. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

94 points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2024)

Supple and mouthfilling, with silky tannins upholding cherry, plum and pretty lavender notes. Grilled garrigue plays out on the finish, which shows sneaky length and elegance. Seductive in feel, with impressive energy, too, for a balanced, harmonious impression. Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2040. 2,500 cases made, 900 cases imported.

"The wines from Bosquet des Papes span the full spectrum ... Regardless of the style, the quality is brilliant, and these are beautiful wines." - Jeb Dunnuck

Bosquet des Papes' stellar 2022s prove once again that this rising-star estate is a favorite among Châteauneuf insiders and aficionados. The Chante le Merle is made in the staunchly traditional method, resulting in "another brilliant wine from this estate ... age-worthy, classic, incredibly satisfying Châteauneuf-du-Pape" per Jeb Dunnuck. The 2022 Chante le Merle is almost entirely Grenache, with 7% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, from a handful of top-flight sites including Les Brusquières, Mont-Redon, and Pignan. Winemaker Nicolas Boiron gives this cuvée a mix of large oak and concrete for the most old-school profile in his range. "A seductive, smoky red, with real depth to its savory character," the 2022 Chante le Merle is emblematic of the illustrious, time-honored style of classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape, expertly crafted by one of its most dynamic estates and winemakers.

A seductive, smoky red, with real depth to its savory character. The dried strawberry leather and crunchy cherry fruit profile remains fresh and vibrant, studded with sanguine notes of smoked meat and dusty earth layered atop smoldering iron. The tannins are sculpted to a fine grain, bringing elegance to the texture. Delicious now, this has years ahead for those with the patience to cellar. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2026 through 2040.

95 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is another brilliant wine from this estate. Classic Provençal garrigue, pepper, leather, and assorted darker cherry and blackberry fruit all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly offers pleasure today, but it’s going to evolve gracefully over the coming 10-15 years. This old-vine cuvée is 86% Grenache and 7% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre coming from the Barbe d'Asne, Les Brusquières, Mont-Redon, and Pignan (nord) lieux-dits. It was not destemmed and was brought up in a mix of foudre, demi-muids, and concrete tanks.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

Checking in at 15.5% alcohol, the delicious 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 86% old-vine Grenache, 7% Syrah and 7% Mourvèdre. It enters the stage with prominent crushed violets, strawberry compote, licorice and black cherry. Meaty components add more nuance. Full-bodied and flamboyant, the 2022 comes across as modern and polished. Enveloped in ripe tannins, it culminates in a bold finale.

A creamy, well-rounded yet lively and citrusy white. It shows notes of fresh lemons, grapefruit, dried herbs, fennel and mild spices. It's medium- to full-bodied. Plenty of volume on the ample palate, harmonious and poised. There is so much texture on the mid-palate with a caressing touch at the edge. Round and aromatic with a fresh, citrusy finish. Drink or hold.

Vivid honeysuckle, lemon peel, ripe pear and spring blossom introduce the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. 2019 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de mon Aieul (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

98JD 98WE 96WA

One of the top handful of wines in the vintage, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is all Grenache, from the different terroirs (one sand, one clay, and one limestone) that was 50% destemmed and aged all in older demi-muids. Reminding me of the 2007 with its incredible perfume of ripe black raspberries, strawberries, flowery incense, peppery and Provençal garrigue, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, expansive texture, gorgeous tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. A wine of incredibly purity, precision, and elegance, yet also with power and opulence, this sensational effort is in need of 3-4 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2021)

Typically a standout even amongst the best of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this monumental bottling is sourced from 75- to 90-year-old Grenache planted in a diversity of pebbly, sandy and clay soils. Fermented partially in whole clusters, it offers black-cherry and raspberry flavors that are herculean in ripeness yet silken and deft, lifted by streaks of salt, crushed stone and smoke. A stunner in youth, the wine will likely improve through 2035 and hold further.

All Grenache, all whole cluster, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul combines hints of menthol and steaminess with big blackberry and raspberry fruit. Full-bodied, creamy and lush, it finishes long and velvety, a tour de force of Grenache.

"Stephan Usseglio has propelled this certified organic and biodynamic estate, named for his father, to among the top ranks of the region." - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

The name Usseglio is no secret to lovers of top-flight Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it's typically PIerre that comes to mind for many. However, that's all changing in recent years, as Domaine Raymond Usseglio is stepping into the limelight under the hand of the highly talented Stephan Usseglio. Having been in charge here since 1999 at the ripe age of 22, Stephan straddles that wonderful line between youthful vision, something he's held onto even as his career has entered a new stage of accomplishment and accolades, and respect for his family's traditions, including their exceptional vine holdings.

The 2022 reds from Usseglio offer a crystal clear picture of a domaine firing on all cylinders and moving up in the quality heirarchy to the very top echelons, highlighted by the JS95 Cuvée Girard, a "dark and powerful" rendition that "makes a bold statement." Taking Grenache purity to the next level is the 2022 Cuvée Imperiale. "With ultra-fine tannins, flawless overall balance, and a great finish," notes Jeb Dunnuck, "it's a gem in the vintage."

This in-stock duo is further proof that the domaine should be on any serious Rhône enthusiasts short list, as these expressions are some of the most polished and artfully crafted offerings you'll find in the region.

96JD 96JS 94WA 94V

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Impériale is just about all Grenache yet includes a mix of other permitted varieties, all raised in concrete. Playing in the medium-bodied, perfumed, elegant style of the vintage, this beauty offers an incredible perfume of sweet raspberries, spring flowers, peppery garrigue, and violets. With ultra-fine tannins, flawless overall balance, and a great finish, it's a gem in the vintage that will evolve gracefully over the coming 10-15 years.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

This astonishing 2022 Chateauneuf has giant depth and concentration of black fruit aromas with notes of spices and dry earth, beneath which is a deep foundation of super-fine tannins. Very long, imposing finish with stacks of licorice and black olive character. Great aging potential. 92% grenache from vines planted in 1901 and 1902, with a small amount of white grape varieties inter-planted. Matured exclusively in concrete tanks. Bottled unfiltered. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

96 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (Apr 2024)

With a reductive profile, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale, a blend of 95% Grenache Noir and the remaining portion from other authorized varieties in unknown proportions, exhales aromas of peony, iris, dark wild berries, flowers and mulberries. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it is characterized by ripe tannins and a broad, saline finish accented by peony notes and bright acids. This cuvée is a beautiful, expertly crafted Chateauneuf-du-Pape totally destemmed and matured entirely in concrete tanks. This is a real gem.

Long-time readers and Chateauneuf lovers will recall the glorious wines I offered during the 2007 CdP campaign. Those were the most succulent examples most of us had ever experienced – I called them mysterious – deep, dark black fruits and figs with espresso, smoke, cedar, roasted meat and hoisin; they were the most intense bottlings ever. Many have wished for a return of those mysteries, subsequent vintages missing the mark, if even by just a hair's breadth. Having tasted a cross section of the newly bottled 2015s, I'm here to say it's time to stop holding your breath. These are the real deal; 2007's fraternal twin. Our buddy Jeb, writing one of his most important articles for Wine Advocate, tells us, "As for the 2015 vintage... the region received more sunshine than in either 2010 or 2011... The reds are full-bodied and show beautiful purity of fruit... Moreover, the quality is incredibly high across all of the appellations, and even across all varieties, which is uncommon... Most vignerons I spoke with compared 2015 to a mix of 2007 and 2010... At the end of the day, 2015 is a beautiful vintage for Southern Rhône lovers that will be a treasure trove for the actual wine drinkers out there." You're gonna want that!

97JD

The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de Mon Aïeul is another gorgeous wine from this family estate. As always it comes from three Grenache parcels: la Serres, La Crau and La Guigasse (there are 2 hectares in each parcel). In both 2015 and 2016 this cuvée wasn’t destemmed and was brought up mostly in tank, with 15-20% in demi-muids. The 2016 spent a huge 45 days on skins before being pressed to barrel. This beauty offers the fine, finesse-driven style of the vintage, yet has full-bodied depth and richness as well as sensational notes of framboise, crushed flowers, licorice, Christmas fruitcake and spice. It’s in the top handful of wines in the vintage and will benefit from short-term cellaring and have 20+ years of overall longevity.

A textured, layered, precise red, showcasing aromas of cherries, raspberries, warm herbs, bay leaves and baking spices. It’s medium- to full-bodied with silty, beautifully melted tannins. So integrated. Lively and focused, with plenty of energy and verve complementing the ripe red fruit and dried herbs. Intense stream of spices in the long, flavorful finish. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2027.

97 points, James Suckling (Sep 2024)

Dark and inky in colour this year. It’s fresh in its berry fruits, really quite powerful, with muscular tannins and driving acidity behind. A dense, dark and brooding vintage of Beaucastel. The aromatic precision however is extremely impressive: elderberry, sloe and blackberry. It’s solid and will age well. Do not drink this young, as it will likely disappoint if opened too early. Grenache and Cinsault fermented in cement, Syrah and Mourvèdre fermented in foudres. Syrah and Counoise are whole bunch fermented.

96 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Sep 2023)

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is some serious Provençal goodness, with just about overflowing aromas and flavors of sweet raspberries, blackberries, peppery garrigue, and Provençal spices. It has the sunny, expressive, complex style of the vintage, medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. No secret to B-21 Southern Rhone fans and collectors, this selection of stunning Arcane wines from the masterful Xavier Vignon offers a range of one of a kind, impeccably crafted cuvees sourced from the Southern Rhone's top terroirs and representing some of the region's best values, now offered at unbeatable pricing perfect for mixing a case.

Arriving in the Rhone Valley in the mid-1990's and consulting for such luminaries as Marcoux, Raymond Usseglio and La Nerthe, the combination of Xavier Vignon's insider access to some of the oldest vines across the valley and creative passion for the region's varied terroirs and grapes inspired him to create the series of Arcane wines, naming each unique release after a card in the Tarot deck with matching illustrations on the labels. Xavier's meticulous winemaking requires some detailed descriptions for full appreciation, so let's dive in.

  • Sourced from 100% Mourvedre from vines up to 100 years of age planted in 17 diverse zones including some in Chateauneuf du Pape, the richly concentrated 94 pt. 2015 Arcane XV Le Diable underwent Xavier's signature extended maceration before aging in 70% in concrete and 30% in new Austrian oak barrels for 15 months, yielding vibrant fruit with lush tannins and perfectly balanced acidity, its name Le Diable translating as the Devil and referring to being seduced by worldly goods.
  • A multi-vintage, organically grown blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah from the AOC's varied north and south terroirs, Xavier aged the full-bodied 92 pt. N/V Xavier Vignon Cairanne Arcane La Temperance Organic in a mix of stainless steel and his patented Vinarius system of submerging small barrels in a wine-filled 7,000 liter wooden vat to prevent any oxygen from contact with the wine, yielding a "rich and fleshy" blend according to James Suckling with a "dark, earthy finish that pulls you back to the glass for more," La Temperance representing balance, moderation, and harmony.
  • Declared "a beautiful, full-bodied, elegant wine that might just be one of the greatest red wines to come from Beaumes de Venise" by Jeb Dunnuck, the 95 pt. N/V Xavier Vignon Arcane XVII L'Etoile is a co-fermented blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre harvested from 2015 through 2017, aged in a mix of barrels and concrete tanks for 15 months yielding elegant layers of fresh fruit with nuances of pepper and spice, L'Etoile translating as "the Star" and representing inspiration and a bright future.
  • A multi-vintage blend from five of the Southern Rhone's greatest recent vintages beginning in 2010, the bold and powerful 96 pt. NV Xavier Vignon Vin de France Arcane Le Fou was sourced from 85% old vine Grenache from different clones grown mostly throughout Chateauneuf du Pape blended with small amounts of Mourvedre, Syrah and Caladoc (a cross of Grenache and Malbec) and aged in a mix of French and Austrian oak barrels, truncated wooden vats and concrete vats, revealing "a full-bodied, layered, powerful yet seamless style" according to Jeb Dunnuck with "silky tannins, and a big finish" built to evolve over the next decades, , Le Fou or "the Fool" representing a leap of faith and an invitation to adventure.
  • Described as "maybe the best Cotes du Rhone Villages I ever tasted" by the Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski with "the stuffing to go another 10 years," the impressive 96 pt. 2015 Xavier Vignon Arcane XIX Le Soleil is a blend of 80% Grenache from 100 year old vines with 10% Mourvedre over 80 years old and 10% Syrah over 50 years old and aged 15 months in one-third each of new barrels, concrete tanks, and stainless-steel tanks, called "an inky colored beauty" by Jeb Dunnuck "that's better than most Chateauneuf du Pape in the vintage," named the Sun to represent good fortune, happiness and joy.
  • Sourced from parcels in Lirac, Vacqueyras, Gigondas, Rasteau, and higher elevation sites in Beaumes de Venise, the 2016 Xavier Vignon Arcane VI Les Amoureux delivers "sheer deliciousness" according to the Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski, describing it as "a stunning effort, showcasing raspberry and strawberry fruit, a silky-creamy texture and lush, mouthwatering flavors," the blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and 5% each Cinsault and Caledoc aged in concrete vats and classified as a Cotes du Rhone while built for extended aging, the Lovers card representing harmony and perfection.
  • Last but certainly not least, the lush 94 pt. 2016 Xavier Vignon Arcane L'Hermite is a blend of 80% Grenache from 100 year vines, 7% Mourvedre and 5% Syrah co-fermented in concrete and aged in truncated wooden vats, with 4% each Muscardin and Picpoul Noir aged in small untoasted barrels, the blend aged partly in Xavier's Vinarium system and cellared for an additional four years in bottle, yielding a harmonious and balanced Gigondas described by Jeb Dunnuck as "elegant, seamless and silky" that promises to reveal its layered complexity over the next decade, L'Ermite or "the Hermit" representing seeking knowledge from within.

Crafted as singular releases with the goal of capturing the perfect intersection of time and place in the vineyard, these one of a kind wines from Xavier Vignon represent a range of truly exceptional Southern Rhone gems at incredible value prices, and while their tarot namesakes may not reliably predict the future, Xavier Vignon's Arcane label guarantees Southern Rhone fans some seriously enjoyable drinking every time a cork is pulled.

The 2016 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Papesse is brilliant stuff, and just about jumps out of the glass with its bouquet of both red and blue fruits, lavender, herbes de Provence, and ground pepper. A wine that just about screams "Provence" with its complex, satisfying aromatics, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, incredibly elegant mouthfeel, fine-grained tannins, and a great finish. It's powerful yet shines more for its polish, elegance, and complexity, and is a complete, nuanced Châteauneuf du Pape that will continue drinking fabulously well over the coming 15-20 years. This is 100% Grenache that was aged in one-third each of truncated vats, concrete tanks, and stainless steel, with a small portion in 200-liter barrels.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2022)

The full-bodied, voluminous 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Arcane La Papesse shows a surprising degree of elegance for such a big wine. Remarkably dark and youthful in appearance, it gives up hints of leather, cedar and dried spices, all set against a backdrop of black cherries and plums. The tannins are fine and silky on the mid-palate, fading gently into soft dustiness on the lingering finish. Impressive, with at least a decade of aging potential still ahead of it.

Located at the northeastern corner of the Chateauneuf du Pape AOC, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has been owned by the Daumen family since 1905, its highly rated Southern Rhone blends crafted by talented fifth generation winemaker Jean-Paul Daumen for the last three decades. One of the first estates in the region to convert to biodynamic practices under Jean-Paul, the domain farms 15 hectares in the Chateauneuf du Pape AOC, a single contiguous north-facing vineyard sheltered from the extreme heat and planted with mostly Grenache in a mosaic of limestone and quartz soils in the Mont Redon lieu-dit. While some of the estate's Grenache are over 100 years of age, winemaker Daumen focuses his cuvees on specific terroirs rather than the age of the vines, the Les Hauts Lieux cuvee a field blend of hand harvested grapes grown at the highest elevation, blended together parcel by parcel from vines averaging 70 years of age. Employing what he calls "severe" selection while dramatically limiting yields, Daumen co-fermented the blended grapes with natural yeasts in cement tanks, then aged the 2020 Les Hauts Lieux CDP in large oak foudres for 18 months, bottling without fining or filtering with additional time in the cellar to yield rich concentration and superb depth.

Consistently garnering critical praise including a spot on the Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2020, the Wine Advocate declared, "Jean-Paul Daumen continues to fashion some of the top wines of the vintage, in just about every vintage" - the elegant 97 pt. 2020 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Les Hauts Lieux offering an outstanding opportunity for collectors and fans of the finest Chateauneuf du Pape rouge to stock the cellar with this meticulously crafted, hard to acquire gem at an unheard of price.

Leading off the three Châteauneuf du Pape releases, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Trois Sources comes from three different terroirs located in the northern part of the appellation, just across the street from the domaine. Roasted Provençal garrigue, black licorice, black raspberries, Asian spices, and a hint of cassis all define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with a layered, medium to full-bodied profile that has silky tannins and no hard edges. It's much more up-front and approachable than the more structured Les Hauts-Lieux and is going to drink fabulously well over the coming 15+ years.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2022)

Dark in colour. Really quite closed on the nose, and tightly wound on the palate; there's real concentration here, and a mass of ripe tannin. Dark in fruit, it has a slight coolness at its heart, savoury with a long finish. Will be excellent in time, as it has balance, freshness, intensity and concentration, and a load of tannin. It's offering limited pleasure in its current form, but will be excellent when it's ready. From the northern edge of the appellation, aged in foudres for 12 months.

96 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Les Trois Sources is a beautifully ripe and pure expression of the vintage, revealing a dense, somber bouquet of mocha, iris, flowers, dark wild berries and subtle garrigue notes. Medium to full-bodied, dense and deep, it is structured around a delicate, fleshy core of fruit, supported by velvety tannins. The mid-palate is elegantly tense and precise, leading to a long, spicy finish with hints of lead pencil. It has the structure to age very nicely for two decades or more.

94 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Oct 2024)

Lovely floral and incense perfume give this a high-toned liveliness despite its full profile. Mocha, balsamic and lavender notes detail the fluid, streamlined palate, with hints of smoked meat and apple wood. Savory acidity powers through, bringing lift to the well-structured finish, marked by graphite intensity that builds. Settling nicely into itself with a few years in bottle, this will only improve with more. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut, Mourvèdre and Counoise.

The 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos des Papes is exquisite, wafting from the glass with a captivating bouquet of sweet red berries, iris, dark cherries, menthol, blood orange and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textured, it’s denser than usual, with a more pronounced structure and a lovely, fleshy core of fruit. Concluding with an ethereal, saline and weightless finish, this is a strong candidate for wine of the vintage—one that should evolve with grace over the coming years to attain a likely perfect score.

99+ points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Oct 2025)

Deeply coloured and quite dark in character, with damson and liquorice notes. It’s generous, full-bodied, quite spicy and fairly potent, with lovely bright, sappy acidity and very fine, soft tannins. There are some similarities with 2022 and 2020, though it’s not as punchy as 2022 nor quite as energetic as 2020. This should be very good, and will drink before both of these recent vintages. All destemmed, aged in old foudres. The estate had a good yield this year, at 25hl/ha.

Chapelle St. Theodoric might not be a household name on the greater Châteauneuf scene, but insiders and savvy collectors have long prized these wines as reference-point classics, and the professional press always seems to be on board with what's going on at this under-the-radar address.

"Chapelle St. Theodoric is turning out some of the most compelling wines from Châteauneuf du Pape ... These are wines worth seeking out..."

- Joe Czerwinski,Wine Advocate

We've just secured our allocation of the remarkable 2022s, and once again they hit the trifecta — top critical acclaim, pristine Southern Rhône class and sophistication, and unbeatable pricing that you likely won't see anywhere else. Sourced from a miniscule plot within the Les Pignan lieu-dit, the 2022 Le Grand Pin is the quintessential expression of the St. Theodoric profile. Notching 96-98 points from Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski, it's full of classic garrigue character to go with pure, old-vine Grenache fruit and seamless structure. In short, "it's going to be brilliant," as Jeb Dunnuck declares. Likewise, its stablemate, the 2022 La Guigasse from sandy soils in the eponymous lieu-dit, comes in at a full 98 points from Decanter's Matt Walls, who dubs it "a very complete wine that's hard to fault, showing whole-bunch southern Rhône winemaking at its best." There's no denying the appeal of these two paragons of world-class, traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Herbal notes flow throughout the juicy strawberry fruit. The alcohol is present but it doesn't feel excessive, the balance is good. It’s exceptionally long indeed, with vibrancy and freshness. The tannins are incredibly fine, plentiful and mouthcoating. A very complete wine that's hard to fault, showing whole-bunch southern Rhône winemaking at its best. This is pure Grenache grown on sand at the lieu-dit La Guigasse, aged for 24 months in demi-muids. 4,800 bottles made.

98 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Sep 2023)

Much like its Grand Pin stablemate, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape La Guigasse manages to be full-bodied and concentrated yet simultaneously light and airy in feel. There's less rose petal here and more garrigue, backed by silky notions of ripe cherries and dark chocolate, while gossamer-like tannins provide a wonderfully pliable, gauzy structure.

95-97 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Guigasse is meatier and more savory, with a gorgeous perfume of mulled red fruits, ground black pepper, and Provençal garrigue. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it delivers fine tannins, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, nicely integrated stems, and a great finish.

97JD 96WA 95WS 95D

The 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Hauts-Lieux comes from a cooler, higher elevation parcel and also includes slightly more Mourvedre, both of which give this cuvée a more firm, structured profile, especially in its youth. Awesome red, blue, and black fruits as well as black licorice, liquid violet, and peppery garrigue define the bouquet, and it's full-bodied, with a great mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a salty, almost bloody character on the finish. It shows the more charming nature of the 2020 vintage yet still deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will have over two decades of longevity.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2022)

In a vintage like 2020, the Cabrières terroir, located in the northern part of the appellation and benefiting from shade during the hottest part of the day, proved to be a real asset, as showcased by the 2020 Les Hauts-Lieux. Evoking a deep, complex bouquet of dark cherries, licorice, iris and flowers, this wine is full-bodied, lively and vibrant, with a tense, crystalline texture and a fleshy, dense mid-palate perfectly framed by ripe, velvety and structured tannins. With its gastronomic bitterness and acidity, it has the potential to age gracefully over the next decade or more.

96 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Oct 2024)

There's a pleasant chewiness to this complex, intensely concentrated Châteauneuf. Spicy and ripe, woven with violet, smoldering incense, salty mineral, earth and warm mocha notes, revealing more nuance with every sip. Hefty bolts of iron offset the ripeness, and a sense of freshness pulses from start to finish. Though a bit mellowed after a few years of bottle age, this remains tightly wound and will benefit from more time.

95 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

More aromatic than Les Trois Sources currently, it has lifted mulberry aromas and a touch of florality. Not as tannic, this is more approachable and ready to drink. Fresh, pure, a distinctly upright style of Châteauneuf, with a fairly rigid tannic skeleton. Fine, cleansing fruit-derived tannins, and a long, savoury finish. An elegant wine. From the northern edge of the appellation, aged in foudres for 12 months.

2020 Domaine Giraud Galimardes Rouge (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

95WS 94JD 94V 94JS 93WA

Offers inviting red currant and cassis flavors up front, layered with licorice root, fruitcake spices and charred mesquite. Though big-boned, this shows grace and polish, balance and finely cut texture. Reveals iron shavings and crushed herbes de Provence, which add a refreshing savory edge through a finish that goes on and on. Beautiful. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2038. 70 cases imported.

95 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Dec 2022)

Coming all from a single parcel in the southern part of the appellation, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes is 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. Its slightly deeper purple hue is followed by full-bodied aromas and flavors of darker, almost blue fruits, ground pepper, loamy soil, truffle, and Provençal garrigue. With a forward, charming, sexy profile, it has sweet tannins and the balance and depth to evolve for 10-15 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2022)

The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Galimardes aged for 18 months in a combination of new oak barriques and concrete vats. It offers up intense aromas of rose petals, very ripe red fruits, exotic spices and a dash of white pepper. Compared to the Tradition, the 2020 Les Galimardes has a higher proportion of Grenache, a little bit less Syrah and no Mourvèdre at all. The result is a massively concentrated, full-bodied red with a firm tannic structure balanced by lively acidity. What both wines have in common is their hedonistic appeal and age-worthiness.

94 points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2023)

A great classic with loads of damson plums, dark berries, mocha and sweet spices. Full-bodied with finely grained tannins and a rich core of berries on the palate. Creamy and well put together. Fresh acidity with a dark cherry-like character emphasizes the flavorful and vibrant finish. 90% grenache and 10% syrah. Drink or hold.

94 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

The fruit-dominated 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes almost explodes with ripe cherries and raspberries. A blend of 90% old-vine Grenache (planted 1903) with 10% Syrah, it's full-bodied, juicy and supple, then turns softly dusty on the finish. This delivers plenty of pleasure and satisfaction, although it exhibits neither the depth nor complexity of the stupendous 2019.

In certain vintages, I actually prefer this wine—from 35-year-old vines in Pignan (Nord)—to the La Guigasse. The 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Grand Pin offers up compelling aromas of rose petals, exotic dried spices, cherries and raspberries. It's full-bodied and expansive in the mouth but somehow remains light and airy in feel, finishing with a wonderfully silky texture and awesome length.

96-98 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

Relatively pale in the glass. Pine needles and rosemary, very much a garrigue herb inflected nose. Broad and mouthfilling, generous and juicy, with rich strawberry fruit, ending on a sandy mineral note. Well balanced despite its breadth and warmth. Luxurious, languorous style that will drink well young and old. 100% old vine Grenache grown on sand in lieu-dit Pignan, no destemming, aged for 24 months in old demi-muids. 3,200 bottles made.

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Grand Pin looks to be outstanding and brings more richness and depth than normal. Black raspberries, mulberries, sappy garrigue, pepper, and some mineral notes all shine in this beauty, which is medium to full-bodied, has a seamless mouthfeel, and enough tannic structure and acidity to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age. If you ever wondered why roussanne is something special in the Southern Rhone, here is the proof. Powerful, concentrated and full-bodied, but with terrific structure and length. Stone fruit flavors. The interaction of fine tannins and salty minerality drives the super-long finish. From a site with sandy soil and a northerly exposure. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

96 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (Apr 2025)

Notes of dried pear come forth on this rich, full-bodied wine. It's a deeply textural wine, without the same degree of noticeable oak influence as the Clairette, though it still has some oak spice notes on the finish. A firm, powerful, muscular style of Roussanne. Great depth, and a sonorous, echoing finish. Sees 40% new oak.

95 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Sep 2025)

More closed aromatically, the medium gold-hued 2024 Châteauneuf Du Pape Pure Roussanne Blanc slowly offers up ripe orchard fruits, honeyed orange, crushed stone, and spice. Based on 100% Roussanne from the sandy soils of Bois Sénéchaux and aged seven months in 60% foudre and 40% new French oak, it's medium to full-bodied, has a nicely balanced, elegant mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and a great finish. Silky yet chewy tannins gradually reveal layers of red cherry, pomegranate, spice, violets, and a hint of clove. Its elegance is underscored by fine tannins, suggesting a wine that, while quiet now, holds the promise of revealing its full beauty with time in the bottle.
