2016 Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva San Martino Rosso (750ml)
Montepulciano from Abruzzo, Italy

What a fantastic, bold Italian red coming from the region of Abruzzo due east of Rome and over the Apennines. It is in Abruzzo where Marina Cvetic Riserva is sourced. The very best grapes from the estate’s top eight vineyards are selected with three criteria; minimum vine age of 30 years, situated at an elevation of 500 to 1200 feet, planted in clay and limestone. Deep and dark with brooding black fruits, vanilla, dark chocolate and truffle. Great balance is achieved with the minerality and acidity from both elevation and limestone. Tannins are ripe with moderate grip. A Gambero Rosso winemaker of the year award and 93 points from the Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck, make this a compelling wine bargain.

The 2016 Marina Cvetic Riserva is another beautiful release from this estate. Coming from 100% Montepulciano and aged in new barrels, it reveals a dense purple/plum color as well as unevolved notes of spiced blackberries, scorched earth, smoked herbs, chocolate, and spring flowers. It’s rich, medium to full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, with plenty of structure. It’s a beautiful wine, but the cellar will be your friend on this one. Hold bottles for another 3-4 years and it should evolve gracefully going forward.

93+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2020)

The 2016 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva San Martino Rosso is a formidable wine that opens to a stirring presentation of luscious black fruit, spice, tar and licorice. The wine's density is extra rich and concentrated, but the magical aspect to the classic 2016 vintage is that the wine never appears too heavy or bold. Ultimately, there is a careful sense of measure and balance achieved here, despite the opulence and sheer exuberance of the material at hand. This is a bottle I drank and enjoyed immensely. This wine aged in new and neutral French oak for 12 to 18 months. An ample 300,00 bottles were made.

93 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Apr 2020)

2007 La Scolca D'Antan (750ml)
Cortese from Gavi, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

No single producer better represents the world-class Italian white wine known as Gavi than the iconic estate of La Scolca. Founded in 1919 by the great-grandfather of current owner Giorgio Soldati, La Scolca is credited with saving the fate of Cortese by deciding to focus entirely on its production at the end of World War II. La Scolca changed the trajectory of the region and now produces three different exceptional Gavi wines, each with unique characteristics but maintaining the estate's signature style of freshness balancing minerality.

The estate's 148 acres of vineyards are planted on the steep hills surrounding the family villa, in the Rovereto Superiore region at the tip of southeast Piedmont. Located 30 miles from the Mediterranean, marine air tempers the cool mountain air with long hours of sunlight that are ideal for ripening. Vineyard slopes are composed of calcareous clay and volcanic soils with chalky veins of limestone similar to Champagne and Chablis, contributing characteristic flinty notes to the wines.

The 2019 La Scolca White Label Gavi DOCG is sourced from the estate's 30 year old vines, with crisp, zesty citrus notes and a subtle salinity. The 2019 La Scolca Black Label Gavi is an elegant expression of the varietal, balancing minerality with vibrant notes of grapefruit and almonds, sourced from Piedmont's oldest Cortese vines of over 60 years. If there was a "Grand Cru" of Gavi and Cortese, it would be the 2007 La Scolca D'Antan, only produced in the best vintages and undergoing aging in stainless for up to ten years, resulting in a unique complexity and exhibiting powerful finesse.
