VDC’s core line is great (especially for the prices), but the Cigar Blend First Cut is undeniably a step up and a real indicator of the top-level quality coming out of this pioneering distillery. The deep tawny color displays beautiful ruby flecks at the edges as it introduces a nose of cherry pie filling, chocolate brownie, dark tobacco, and sweet potato. The super-pure VDC malt is there in spades, and with air the aromas brighten to pickled ginger and dried apple, followed by a distinctly earthy tone of autumn farm fields, some sun-dried tomato, and milk chocolate. The medium-weight palate is wonderfully textured, with flavors of deep red cherry, red plum, red licorice, blackberry, and black currant. The profile is one-of-a-kind for sure, but as with all VDC's stuff, the purity of the malt is an unmistakable hallmark characteristic all the way through. The medium-long finish carries a lighter tobacco note than the nose, along with spiced cookie, root beer, and sassafras. This one is a real success, operating entirely in its own idiom.
