Mezcal is hotter than ever, and with the breadth of stylistic diversity and better-than-ever quality standards that now define the category, there's arguably no more fascinating or thrilling ground for exploration on the spirits scene right now. We've seen some real stunners come through our doors in the past year, but few if any have exhibited the kind of singular sophistication we found in this blend of agave karwinskii and agave potatorum from maestro mezcalero Victor Ramos.
Based in Miahuatlán village in Oaxaca, Tío Victor is best known for and most often associated with the Mezcaloteca and Mal Bien labels, but this single-batch expression selected and bottled by ImpEx is truly the master at his very best. Remarkably elegant and pure for a single distillation, it's a true thing of beauty. Produced on a copper alembic still and aged in glass for one year, the Coyote Verde is a "showcase of high-toned brilliance and shimmering personality that lives up to its moniker" as noted by B-21 spirits buyer Andrew Kitz.
While not exactly rare on the mezcal scene, the karwinskii and potatorum varietals are nonetheless highly sought-after for their singular profiles, and when blended and distilled together, they produce something in a class all its own.
