When we were approached about being the exclusive retailer for the latest cask selection for the Florida Rum Society, the choice was a no-brainer. No question as to why the FRS rum geeks picked this one. The Faux Fall Rum cask from Privateer packs a big personality into a very refined and polished package. The aromatics lead with light molasses, butterscotch, and spicy wood tones, with no real discernable heat. There’s a fascinating counterpoint of orange sherbet that sits above the darker tones, which eventually develop into apple pastry, hazelnuts, sesame crackers, sweet dark tobacco, cooked mango and papaya, and sassafras undertones. The palate displays decidedly weighty and opulent texture with a darker molasses character than the nose. It’s very spicy at first with subtle heat from start to finish. Additional flavors of oolong tea, wood fire embers, cola spice, and root beer clearly reflect the hallmark Privateer Navy Yard style. Time and few drops of water bring out more complexity in raw walnuts, pumpernickel bread, licorice root, and clove on the subtle but long finish. The folks at Florida Rum Society have always been big fans of Privateer, and when you taste this latest selection of theirs, you’ll know exactly why.
