These Neta bottlings are something else. Artisanal to the core. Each one comes from a single batch (i.e. one harvest and one oven load of piñas), all harvested and made around the Miahuatlán village of Logoche, so every batch is a truly singular expression. This batch was distilled in June 2023 by Wilfredo Garcia Sanchez entirely from Agave tequilana grown on red volcanic soils by the capón method. The piñas were roasted over mesquite wood in a conical pit oven for six days, followed by double distillation on a pair of copper pot stills. An explosive aromatic profile starts with sweet roasted agave, mineral spirits, dried raisins, and spiced orange peel. Good luck trying to pin it down to a “style” because it throws one curve-ball after another, including oily petrol, charred tomato, spent charcoal, ripe blueberry, and fine gravel. Don’t try to make sense of it. Just take the ride. The palate is every bit as explosive as the nose with big blue and black fruits, both ripe and dried – black currant, black raspberry, prunes, and dates – followed by secondary flavors of crushed rocks, mint, iodine, and pink peppercorn. The beautiful flavor depth, as impressive as it is, takes a backseat to the mouthfeel, which literally has everything in spades – an insane texture, incredible weight, effortless balance, mouth-filling viscosity, and an endless finish. Utterly intense and measured at the same time. Handcrafted mezcal ancestrale of the highest caliber.
