These Neta bottlings are something else. Artisanal to the core. Each one comes from a single batch (i.e. one harvest and one oven load of pińas), all harvested and made around the Miahuatlán village of Logoche, so every batch is a truly singular expression. This batch was distilled in May 2020 by Heriberto Garcia Sanchez from a 60/40 blend of wild, two-year capón Bicuixe (A. karwinskii) and cultivated Espadin (A. angustifolia) grown on the region’s red volcanic soils. It’s a classic mezcal of real terroir expression. The explosive aromatic profile leads with roasted artichoke, dill, and stewed blue and black fruits. There’s incredible depth here on a foundation of highly complex smoke, which supports everything from rosemary and fresh pine tips to crispy bacon, asphalt, and blueberry sorbet w/ mint. The palate is enigmatic, first taking on deep black currant, cola spice, and volcanic minerality (almost Etna Rosso-like) on medium-full weight and a viscous middle. However, the texture becomes extraordinarily energetic and racy with air, sporting lively clove, juniper berry, and fresh-grated ginger to a long finish of outstanding depth, with wildly contrasting mint, meaty iron, and pickled pepper. It’s all over the place in most charming way, just an endlessly fun spirit to capture your sensory imagination. Handcrafted mezcal ancestrale of the highest caliber.
