How does a French winemaking family find itself making world-class sparkling wine in the New Mexico desert? A visit to New Mexico – a vision that planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the desert could yield serious Methode Champenoise – a leap of faith and Jeroboam of intuition. That was the early 1980s. By 1999, the Gruet family had sold a million bottles. In 2011 they earned their place in the Wine Specator's Top 100 for the Blanc de Noirs. Tasting through the Gruet offerings recently, the Blanc de Noirs remains my favorite – bubbles that will please any Francophile.

90WE #43 Top 100

Rich aromatics of Pinot Noir, wondering full textures, refined, with excellent finish; crisp and clean.

92 points, Bob Sprentall, B-21 Proprietor (Nov 2018)

Elegant and focused, with creamy vanilla and apple aromas and rich yet crisp flavors of baked pear and cinnamon bread. Drink now through 2014. 20,000 cases made.

90 points, Wine Spectator (Dec 2011)

#43 - Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2011

Continuous and rich with a ripe elegance; dry, balanced, and deep; a carefully-made wine at a very reasonable price.
