"Upon first taste, this instantly became my favorite, go-to Blanco. It's almost painfully delicious." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer
To the initiated, Caballito Cerrero needs no introduction, but to the uninitiated, it's quite simply one of the most sought-after names in agave. Why? Well, to begin with, the spirit is unbelievably, almost singularly, delicious. And then there's the history behind it. Fifteen generations of the Jimenez family have been growing agave and distilling in the Jalisco village of Amatitán, what many consider to be the birthplace of Mexican spirit tradition. In fact, the family property itself is home to the oldest known distilling site in Mexico according UNESCO records, dating to the early 1600s. The current distillery, Fábrica Santa Rita (NOM 1114), is widely considered one of the best in Mexico, and once you taste the incredible destilado they produce, you'll agree.
One of the key points of understanding for the brand is that they purposely forego the certification of tequila according the Mexican legal standards, for a variety of principled rather than practical reasons, so destilado it is, even though the Blanco is produced entirely from Azul agave. The gravity-fed process, natural spring water, and estate-grown crop all result in one of the purest expressions of Blue Weber you'll find. Heady, haunting, and oh so correct, the Blanco Azul 46 is "a must-try for anyone who considers themselves a serious agave aficionado." Again, Caballito Cerrero is one of the agave world's premier artisan brands, and since the family only distills twice a year, it remains an elusive score that fans clamor over. In short, get it while you can.
Caballito Cerrero – the name that every agave head wants to get their hands on. Upon first taste, this instantly became my favorite, go-to Blanco. It's almost painfully delicious. Yes, the Jimenez family has ditched the CRM classification of tequila for a variety of reasons we won’t get into, but this is arguably the purest expression of Blue Weber out there. The nose leads immediately with the clearest example of perfectly ripe agave – pure, gorgeous, and unctuous – contrasted beautifully with shimmering, super-clean minerality. Then the complexity explodes into lemon ice, cool mint, crushed lime, sweet peppers, orange blossom, dried white flowers, sharp green apple, and dried grass. The palate is … you guessed it, loaded with perfectly ripe agave. The full, viscous body supports additional flavors of peppermint, sweet Anaheim peppers, smoky minerality, crabapple, and tarragon, all coalescing into a long, salty, focused finish of iodine, shiso leaf, and lime pith. It’s a must-try for anyone who considers themselves a serious agave aficionado.
