We love a good single cask that just takes all the best-known and well-loved features of a fan-favorite and turns them up to 11. This cask from Angel’s Envy is a quintessential example of “never too much of a good thing.” The trademark opulence that Angel’s Envy fans swoon over reaches another level here, which is immediately apparent in the deep orange-amber color. The only choice is to dive right in. Big fruit aromas make a big impression, first with luxurious red cherry, raspberry, and hints of mulberry, before it takes a hard turn towards super-ripe green apple, almost Jolly Rancher-like, with brown sugar and baking spice (think Snickerdoodles) playing underneath. No heat at all despite the 55% ABV. The palate displays real depth and medium-full weight, with nice textural grip, very balanced for the proof – actually that’s one of the most compelling aspects of this barrel. The red fruits are more subdued now, as cinnamon and pie crust flavors lead the way. With time and a few drops of water, we have flavors of childhood nostalgia – chocolate brownie, candied red apple, hard candy, and root beer – spreading out on a lengthy, persistent but even finish. A thrill a minute from a bona fide bourbon powerhouse.
