Unibroue Maudite 4pk
Belgian Strong Dark Ale from Chambly, Quebec, Canada

100BA

Bready, almost cake like malt aroma. Dollop of spice and ripe fruit with a well seen alcohol of esters and light solvent. Faint caramel malt, ripe pine apple fruitiness, and bold spices that is dominant of clove. Heavy side of phenols with a spicy sweet alcohol, touch herbal from the phenols also. Straight up hop bitterness is light compared to the other flavours but still seems to flavour and balance. Nearly excessively crisp, solid medium body with some slickness. Packed with flavour, this one does not hold back at all. Very expressive and the sheer complexity does it for me. I keep this one around to keep my taste buds in check.

Newcastle Brown Ale 12pk
English Brown Ale from Newcastle, England, United Kingdom

97DM

A soft blanket of white head covers this dark copper-hued brew. Nutty malts and sweet caramel scents lift up from the glass, while floral hops and light raisin notes thread brightness into the bouquet. Smooth toasted biscuit flavors caress the tongue as earthy, floral hop notes draw out the malt's nutty undertone. This creamy beer's fresh and balanced, wrapping up with a lingering dryness that's simply mouthwatering.

Brilliant medium light copper color. Rich, peppery, toasty nutty earthy aromas of caramelized nuts, dried fruits, and honey buttered toast with an even, crisp, effervescent, fruity light-to-medium body and an effortless, interesting, breezy brown sugar, roasted nuts, arugula, and minerals finish. A spot on session bitter.

Paulaner Hefe-Weizen Natural Wheat 6pk
Hefeweizen from Munich, Bavaria, Germany

89BA 87DM

While it does not form a massive head the lacing stays intact, crystal clear golden hue. Clean nose of dried grass, bread, cooked veggies, and a subtle herbal hop. Lots of crispness, moderate sized body, a bit of chewy malt up front. Balance hop bitterness, lots of clean grain, linger of herbal hop in the finish. Easy to knock back, more than enough flavor to keep me coming back.

89 points, BeerAdvocate (Aug 2015)

Big wafts of banana reach the nose with light clove and bubblegum accents. Prickly wheat splashes onto the tongue first, followed by banana and clove that infuse the grainy malt base with classic hefe flavors. A touch of bubblegum briefly sweetens the swallow mid-sip, but a flash of lemon upstages it before the finish. This beer could use a touch more wheat to buoy its hallmark flavors, though it's a neatly balanced example of the style.

Reissdorf Kolsch 4pk
Kölsch from Cologne, Cologne, Germany

94DM

Kolsches are not readily found on store shelves this side of the pond, but if you happen across this one, it's a wonderful place to start. Reissdorf is very light yellow with a rocky, pearl-white head. The bouquet doesn't bully the nose, but does come on strong with biscuity, grainy notes and flowery hops. It starts bready and sweet on the tongue, before hops pop in with mild peppery spice and gentle floral notes that tingle throughout the aftertaste. Reissdorf's body is medium-light with high carbonation and incredibly low alcohol, culminating in a dry, crisp, and refreshing finish.

Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout 4pk
Russian Imperial Stout from Tadcaster, England, United Kingdom

98BA

Okay, where do I begin? I feel as if I am in the presence of the beergod itself. This is a rich, full to medium-bodied brew with a smooth, creamy, light mouthfeel. Roasted notes are in the forefront and pair with a lemony/limey-rind-like hop presence that takes the entire taste to a near astrigent level. You can pick up some floral-like flavours from the hops too. Malt flavours of coffee, plump raisins, prune/plum, bitter chocolate and faint smoke beckon to balance a foundation of bitterness, both roasted malt and hops. Nice rounded background sweetness. The finish on this stout contains notes of smoke and a roasted/sweet feel on the palate.

Samuel Smith's The Celebrated Oatmeal Stout 4pk
Oatmeal Stout from Tadcaster, England, United Kingdom

94BA 94BTI 92WE

Firm, thick, milky smooth mouthfeel, paired with a very high dextrin sweetness and feel, that's not sickly sweet, but nonetheless ample, defining and bold. Oats are noticeable, giving the beer depth and lending a touch of starch in the flavour. A slight acrid character is lifted from the palate by the beer's prickly carbonation. Robust. More rich blackstrap molasses with undertones of coffee, unsweetened bitter dark cooking cholocate, deep earth flavours, real faint aniseed, a mark of herbal (rosemary?) and a leafy/woody character from the hops that carries over into the mouthfeel; bitty, coarse, a bit pear-like. Bit of a "cola" edge appears where the beer peaks and begins to fade. Mineral flavours pull out of the thickness and embed themselves in the sweet-ish / woody finish.

94 points, BeerAdvocate (Jan 2003)

Dark brown color. Aromas of dried sour cherry, honeycomb, and buttery roasted nuts with a silky, fruity-yet-dry medium body and a long, stone fruit, tonka bean, latte, milled grain, and clay finish. Great flavor and style.

94 points, Beverage Testing Institute (Jan 2014)

Balanced and exceptionally smooth, this pours an opaque dark-brown color in the glass, with a glimmer of soft garnet and a dense tan head. Initial aromas of milky oatmeal and whole-grain bread are followed by nuances of sweet spice and dried fruit, almost like cinnamon-raisin bread. The mouthfeel is lush and creamy, but with good carbonation to keep the dense flavors of toasted grain, milk chocolate and lightly roasted coffee from feeling too heavy. Touches of sweet smoke and hop linger on the long finish.

Samuel Smith's The Famous Taddy Porter 4pk
English Porter from Tadcaster, England, United Kingdom

100BA

The quintessential modern day Porter, pitch black, with a great head. Faint chocolate and coffee in the aroma. Easy drinking, smooth with a mellow rawness, creamy to the mouth, dry with faint molasses. Slight twang roasted character and some fig. At 5.0 percent alcohol by volume, this makes for a hell of a session beer. But, slap some eggs (sunny side up), pork & beans, black pudding, fried tomato slices, butter simmered button-mushrooms, toast and HP brown sauce together and it makes for a great hangover breakfast. Oh yeah.

St. Bernardus Abt 12 Belgian Abbey Ale
Quadrupel from Watou, West Flanders, Belgium

100BA

The glass is rimming with lace, hazed brown colour gives the appearance some depth. A spike of clove, layers of ripe fruit and malt sweetness are what the aroma is all about. Clove is certain to be the first flavour you taste as it rides the wave of sweetness, big brown sugar flavour with some cake like malty qualities. Some buttery and phenolic flavours shoot to the palate in the middle to make it a bit juicy. Some earth and carob flavours in the mix. Alcohol is a little evident, it hiding under the sweetness right behind the fruity flavour that soon flare into esters and mild solvent flavours. Finishes sweet and warming. Exceedingly smooth with a creamy full body after the smoothness moves through. I’d have no problem sipping this all night long. A heavenly abbey ale that goes down as one of the best for me.

Tucher Helles Hefe Weizen (500ml)
Hefeweizen from Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany

97BA

Appearance: Soft pale hazy yellow with a crown like white lace that floats all the way down. Smell: Spicy with a mild black pepper aroma with a little melon and banana, from the fruity esters, in the nose also. Taste: Smooth and crisp with a silky texture and nice carbonation holding this medium bodied brew together. Grain and wheat malt dominate the forefront though a subdued fruit and rounding spicy flavour that leads to a restrained hop bitterness. An underlying sweetness flows from start to finish with a bready yeasty flavour tagging along. Top notch for the style, a must buy for all wheat beer lovers. Balanced to a T and goes down quicker than water. Add a slice of lemon to break in the novice beer drinker.

Tucher Kristall Weizen (500ml)
Kristalweizen from Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany

91BA

Appearance: Bright pale golden-yellow in colour with a dense rocky/frothy white head that hold its ground by staying around for the duration. Smell: Mellow fruit like floral aroma ... sweet to the nose with hints of banana and ripe pineapple. Taste: Medium in body, clean and crisp (high carbonation) with a bready wheat malt mouth feel. Minimal hop bitterness though more hop flavour (mildly spicy) is picked towards the end in the drying finish. Slight fruit flavour lingers with some sweetness to leave the mouth not totally dry. We could see drinking a lot of this with some messy bbq and dirty rice with beans. A well crafted brew ... pleasing to almost any beer drinkers palate.

Weihenstephaner Hefe 6pk
Hefeweizen from Freising, Bavaria, Germany

100BA

Appearance: Cloudy with a murky orange colour, the head is spectacular … dense and rocky with stickiness all over the glass. Smell: Malted wheat sweetness, mild spicy nose with yeast and light lemon highlights. Taste: Malted wheat and barley in the raw, earthy yeast character with hints of lemon in the backround. A quick spark of clove hits the same time as the carbonation. Semi crisp with a medium body and a well structured carbonation. Minimal hop bitterness, maltiness is cracker like and gets drier and drier towards the end. Nutty flavours from the yeast and very faint fennel character from the phenols come through. Finish is quite clean and alcohol is a tad noticeable though the extravagant fruity side of the esters associated with this style is held at bay and more spiciness seems to take hold. One of the best in the world needless to say, it still lives up to its name. A wheat beer at its best.

Hazed yellow straw color; a massive white head towers over the beer. It's one of those epic heads. Pleasant aroma of green plantains, ripe pears, bread crust and powdered clove. A little chewy and slick in the medium body; crispness digs in deep. Spicy from the alcohol and mild phenols, nutty and bready from the malt, fruity with banana and pear flavors ... lots of flavors thrown at the palate at once, but within the controlled chaos, everything works together. Long, lingering, drying finish of clove, biscuity malt and fading ripe fruit. A worthy beer and warranted to gain cult status. Not one flavor tries to steamroll another, which makes it dangerously drinkable. Just fine on its own, but begs to be paired with a full-on cheese fondue of Emmental and Jarlsberg, and a crusty baguette.

Wells Banana Bread 4pk
English Strong Ale from Bedford, England, United Kingdom

88DM

Do you go bananas for beer? Well, how about bananas in your beer? The brewers at Charles Wells seem to have done just that with their Banana Bread beer, and the tasting experience seems like an adult version of something out of Willy Wonka's factory. The aroma is simply bursting with banana, fresh and ripe and ready to eat. The flavor follows suit initially, with massive bready and banana flavors so pronounced, you can almost taste the walnuts. It takes a second or two, but Banana Bread ultimately reminds you that it is a beer, finishing slightly dry with mild bitterness and understated hop flavors of flowers and spice. We're not sure how many of these you'll ask for in a sitting, but it is certainly an experience worth every sip.

Wexford Irish Cream Ale 4pk Cans
Cream Ale from Suffolk, England, United Kingdom

93DM

This is one of our favorite Irish ales. First, it comes in a can with a widget, which releases nitrogen when the beer is opened. Nitrogen is usually reserved for stouts, but we are glad that Wexford uses it -- it gives this beer creaminess and a long lasting, thick head that's complemented by a soft orange tint and a caramelized, toffeelike nose. This beer should be savored so as to enjoy the sweet and fruity aspects, which are more prevalent here than in most examples of the style. Additionally, the hop profile is very low and almost nonexistent in terms of bitterness. We're proud to call Wexford the easiest drinking beer we tasted this issue.
