The 2023 Hallgarten Riesling trocken Alte Reben opens with a clear, pure, bright and aerial, beautifully herbal bouquet with notes of Melissa herb, crushed (slate) rocks and iodine. Textured and perfectly round, this is a remarkably fine and elegant Riesling with savory acidity and firm mineral tension that structures the intense, ripe and elegant fruit core, leading to a long, intense and saline, never heavy yet seriously intense finish. This is an excellent Riesling to have with food—in 3 to 5 years. It was bottled a month ago with 12.5% stated alcohol and a natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Hallgartener Alte Reben was harvested from 40-year-old vines picked in the Jungfer, Hendelberg and Schönhell. A lovely flicker of reductive flint combines with lemon oil and hayflowers on the nose. The palate adds a gentle, creamy nuttiness from oak, pervaded by lemon peel on the smooth-textured frame. A big mouthful of wine, this boasts exquisite contour and much substance. (Bone-dry)
