Bonhomme’s wines have historically been gangbusters best-sellers at B-21, but it’s been a few vintages since we checked in, and with the way the 2023 Vieilles Vignes is showing, I’d say we’re back on board in a big way. Sourced from Bonhomme’s oldest parcels approaching 70 years of age, the 2023 is a statement in grace and elegance. The aromatic profile is subtle and nuanced, starting with soft yellow fruits like white peach and nectarine, eventually giving way to citrus blossom and well-integrated barrel tones, all supported by a great underlying limestone signature. After aeration, vibrant tree fruits emerge with subtle touches of spice, while the minerality becomes more prominent and remains so throughout. It boasts serious poise that you don’t often find at this price point, which carries over on the palate in the form of super-fine limestone minerality, fantastic balance and textural precision, medium weight, and excellent definition. The stone fruit flavors are front and center all the way. Notes of apricot and white peach mingle with luxurious but balanced tones of lemon confit and citrus custard. With time, the minerality becomes more prominent as the excellent structural tension draws the finish out. It’s a classic expression for fans of the domaine or anyone looking for a proven white Burgundy winner for a steal.

The 2023 Viré-Clessé “Vieilles Vignes” bottling from Domaine Pascal Bonhomme is nicely ripe, coming in at 13.5 percent octane, but exuding all of the vibrancy and freshness inherent in this lovely vintage. The nose hops from the glass in a mix of apple, pear, chalky minerality, almond, fruit blossoms, a deft framing of vanillin oak and a topnote of orange zest. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and vibrant, with a gorgeous core of fruit, lovely soil signature, an excellent girdle of acidity and a long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. This is great Mâconnais chardonnay! (Drink between 2025-2035)
