Incredibly forward and approachable out of barrel, with an incomparably sweet blackberry and cherry fruit, complex notes of liquorice spice, rose petals and earth. The texture is fleshy and rich, with velvety tannins and enough freshness to draw the wine to a lovely, persistent finish. The grapes are from just over a half-hectare of old vines originally planted in the 1960s. Mugnier noted of the vintage: ‘I think one must be a pessimist in the short term but an optimist in the long term.’ With wines like this, one can see why.

Like its stablemates, Mugnier's 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is so open and expressive that it will be difficult to resit in its youth. Bursting from the glass with notes of raspberries, rose petals, exotic spices and citrus oil, it's medium- to full-bodied, suave and seamless, with beautiful purity of fruit, melting tannins and a broad, sapid finish.
