Aromas of blackberries, black olives, lavender, violets and hints of oyster shells and iodine follow through to a medium body with fine, creamy tannins and a long and energetic finish. Linear and bright. Already showing nicely, but better in three or four years.

Showing the characteristic generosity of Siepi, with red liquorice, blood orange, baked raspberries, concentrated and opulent, vivid ruby colour, delicious. A vintage with reduced yield after issues with flowering. 75% new oak for ageing. The Mazzei family of Siepi is currently on its 25th generation of winemakers, based at Castello di Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti, farmed organically since 2006, with Siepi from a 6ha site. Presented in a heavy bottle, the Mazzei 2023 Siepi is very modern and beautifully seamless, although there is something old school about its sheer scale and ambition. This is one of the biggest wines in this report, with a generous, all-embracing style built around major fruit concentration and plenty of oak. The 50-50 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot delivers layers of dark fruit, plum and sweet spice with a broad, richly textured palate. This style may not be for everyone, but the wine makes a strong statement. The two varieties are aged separately in French oak, with barriques for the Merlot and tonneaux for the Sangiovese, and 70% new wood was used overall. Production is 35,000 bottles.

A sophisticated, complex and harmonious red, boasting cherry, blackberry, iron, tobacco, toasty vanilla and resin aromas and flavors. The refined tannins sneak up on you while you are enjoying the array of flavors. Offers terrific balance and a long, spicy aftertaste. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2029 through 2048.
