"This is one of the more captivating and age-worthy expressions of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc." - Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate
Maule Valley's Laberinto is quickly becoming one of Chile's most acclaimed producers, and the Cenizas de Laberinto Sauvignon Blanc has arguably become the country's most iconic expression of the varietal. While building an impressive consulting resume, winemaker Rafael Tirado built and planted what can only be described as one the world's most distinctive vineyards. Laberinto isn't just a metaphor for the property - the vineyard has a literal circular maze of vines at its center, and the rest of the blocks are laid out largely according to the natural sweeps and contours of the slopes.
Tirado grows several varietals at his estate, and he excels with all of them, but time and accolades have proven the Cenizas Sauvignon Blanc to be his finest white wine. From a single plot planted in 1993 on volcanic ash and granite soils, it's always a smash hit with critics with remarkable consistency. The 2013 was the last vintage to score under 94 points in Wine Advocate, and even that one notched 93 points. So it's no surprise to see the 2023 show up with another 95-point Advocate score for its "tangy, refreshing energy laden with chiseled persistence." Cenizas is always very racy and mineral when young, but it fleshes out beautifully with age, so you shouldn't be shy about stashing some away in the cellar, even though the easy, case-buy price might tempt you to open one (or two) tonight. |
