The 2023 Marsannay “Ouzeloy” from Domaine Roty is excellent. These old vines are now ninety years of age and it shows in the wine’s complex bouquet of dark berries, black cherries, a touch of coffee bean, smoked meats, a fine base of dark soil tones and cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, precise and shows excellent depth of old vine fruit at the core, with excellent complexity and balance, ripe tannins and excellent length and grip on the very promising finish. As is often the case with the Ouzeloy chez Roty, this will need some cellaring time to blossom, but it is going to be an excellent wine.

The 2023 Marsannay Les Ouzeloy was a little quiet on the nose and just lacked the joie-de-vivre of the other cuvées at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, bright red fruit and fine acidity. I like the precision on the finish here and I suspect the aromatics just require time to awaken. My score is based on this happening - feel free to decant this cuvée.

Very dark colour, crimson at the rim. This seems at first sight to be over the top but in fact there is such a wealth of fruit that the tannins are covered. But we are in the world of black fruit here. Pierre-Jean tells me that they had a swarm here, and the bees left traces of honey on the vines. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Nov 2025.

A notably ripe and pretty nose offers up an array of poached plum, black raspberry and violet aromas that are trimmed in enough wood to remark upon. There is better vibrancy to the very rich and sappy medium-bodied flavors that tighten up noticeably on the firm, dusty and serious but not really austere finale.
