Back when I was still a wine merchant specializing in Burgundy, the Champs-Chenys was always the single vineyard bottling of Gevrey that I bought for my own cellar from the Roty family. I do not necessarily think that it is the best of the now four different cuvées, but it was always my favorite. The 2023 version is again excellent, revealing a vibrant and complex nose of dark berries, black cherries, grilled meats, dark chocolate, a superb base of soil, just a whisper of Gevrey mustard seed, woodsmoke and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and already quite suave on the attack, with an excellent core of fruit, ripe tannins, lovely soil signature and a long, seamlessly balanced and promising finish.

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys has a much more floral bouquet than the La Justice, with ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry fruit and hints of pomegranate emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded texture, gentle but insistent grip and a fresh pine-tinged finish. Very fine.

Dark centre inside a rich crimson purple. The fruit lifts to a different level here, albeit with the extra sunshine of 2023 whereas I might prefer the more graceful 2024. At the moment the Champs Chenys shows a proportion of two thirds dark fruit to one third red. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2025.

While not exactly high-toned, the softly earthy, ripe and fresh fruit does derive more from the red side of the fruit spectrum. The delicious and slightly denser, though still not especially concentrated, medium weight flavors possess a beguiling mouthfeel and good precision on the moderately austere finish that displays focused power. This well-balanced effort is a very good Gevrey villages and worth considering, though I underscore that it's definitely built-to-age. *Outstanding*
