The 2023 Falanghina Flora displays a glistening golden hue. It entices with a pretty mix of wildflowers, stone dust, apricots and sweet smoke on the nose. Ripe in style, the palate offers a core of juicy acidity to balance an opulent wave of orchard fruits that sweeps across the senses, leaving a tinge of citrusy spice. Long yet energetic, the 2023 leaves a lasting impression as nuances of nectarine and a hint of sour melon fade. Pure Falanghina seduction in a glass.

An old variety but not a particularly esteemed one, Campania’s Falanghina has always been eclipsed by Fiano and Greco, which have garnered a well deserved reputation. Falanghina was more likely to be found by the carafe in a local osteria where it played the role of a simple white for fish, or alternatively made into an oaky Chardonnay substitute for the local market. But I Pentri is one of the producers taking it seriously. This husband-and-wife team farm their 10ha of vines on the slopes of Mount Taburno meticulously, with the courage to lean into the personality of their local varieties. This is expansive and luxurious, with notes of spiced pineapple, green banana, daffodil pollen, and the rich creaminess of a good mango lassi. The palate is lush and concentrated, with roasted quince and dried apricots, but with enough freshness to scaffold all the heady southern fruit. It’s Falanghina as it might have been – a revelation.

A silky white, refreshing and harmonious, with flavors of apricot, persimmon, salted green almond, lemon wax and white blossoms that start off subtle but build nicely through the lingering, lightly chalky finish. Drink now through 2033. 2,100 cases made, 700 cases imported.
