The 2023 Fleurie “Poncié” bottling from Jean-Etienne Chermette is an outstanding young wine, coming in at 13.5 percent octane in this vintage. The wine offers up a deep, complex and sappy bouquet of red and black cherries, sweet cranberries, pigeon, a touch of raw cocoa, dark soil tones, a nice dollop of whole clusters, fresh thyme and a floral topnote redolent of peonies. On the palate the wine is pure, elegant, full-bodied and transparent down to its soils, with a lovely core of fruit, good acids, fine-grained tannins and a long, impeccably balanced and nascently complex finish. This is going to be an outstanding bottle of Fleurie, but it has a good undercarriage of tannin and will deserve some cellaring time to soften them up properly. It will be very long-lived. Red currant and bruised black cherry aromas lean into pomegranate and red plum on the nose. The palate brings in soothing-yet-youthful tannins towards a destiny of elongated red fruit that is welcomed on the finish.
