Ultra-classic aromatics of ripe black cherries, black olives, bloody meat, and violets emerge from the 2023 Saint Joseph Paradis Saint Pierre, along with a beautiful sense of damp granite-like minerality. Based on 100% Syrah from the oldest vines of the estate and aged 15 months in barrels and demi-muids, it's fleshy and textured on the palate, with the classic 2023 more open style and ripeness. Medium to full-bodied, it has ripe velvety tannins and a great finish. Hide bottles for 4-5 years if you can hold off and it will shine over the following 15+ years. Drink 2029-2044.

The 2023 Paradis Saint Pierre should be considered a gold-standard representation of the modern style in St-Joseph, and the wider Northern Rhône. The entire Coursodon range is defined by undeniable polish and poise, and the Paradis reaches next-level status in this regard. The nose leads with a drop-dead gorgeous tension between ripe fruit and savory complexity. Deep blackberry, plum, black cherry, and boysenberry aromas set up against wonderfully refined white and black peppercorns, Chinese five spice, toasted cumin seed, dried herbs, and granitic soil tones, while a pretty purple floral undertone peeks out at intervals. The palate is, like all Coursodon’s 2023s, sleek and lush in texture but not without a bright backbone of structure. It’s not as robust or compact as the 2022, but it will no doubt flesh out and gain weight on the mid-palate in fine form after just a few years in the cellar. Even at this stage, the flavors are impeccably defined in their perfectly balanced black/blue fruits – currant, blackberry, fig, and Damson plum – and secondary nuances like smoked Aleppo pepper, toasted black peppercorns, and cured bresaola, with a firm granite terroir signature echoing on the extraordinarily precise finish. It’s more irrefutable proof that Coursodon is among the appellation’s elite handful of domains.
