A superb 96 pt. bargain from the estate the Wine Advocate calls "Eden Valley’s premier name in Riesling,” fans of New World Riesling and anyone seeking a palate-pleasing dry white wine know to scoop up this latest release from Australia’s iconic Pewsey Vale winery, the energetic and enticing 96 pt. 2022 Pewsey Vale Riesling boasting a brilliant core of fresh citrusy fruit with notes of crushed stone and precise acidity at specially negotiated pricing to enjoy over the next decade.

Originally planted 175 years ago with Riesling cuttings from the Rheingau by founder Joseph Gilbert, Pewsey Vale began its modern transformation in 1961, led by pastoralist Geoffrey Angas Parsons and his friend, vigneron Wyndham Hill-Smith, a pioneer of Barossa Valley wine whose family established Yalumba. Replanting the vineyard with vines propagated from the original 1847 vines, the first vintage was released in 1964, garnering immediate critical acclaim for its fresh, mineral driven style and establishing a legacy of quality and consistency that has continued for the last three decades under top Australian winemaker Louisa (a.k.a. "Lou") Rose, its consistent track record of quality described as “really impressive” by Josh Raynolds of Vinous and featured multiple times on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100. Planted in a north-facing amphitheater high above the southern Barossa Valley at an altitude between 450 and 500 meters, Pewsey Vale’s 66-hectares of Riesling vines enjoy cooler temperatures requiring an extended ripening period that enhances concentration while preserving the grapes' acidity. Dividing the vineyard into 29 unique blocks and fermenting each of the parcels with indigenous yeast, winemaker Lou Rose employs a minimal intervention approach, aging the elegant 2022 Pewsey Vale Riesling in stainless steel and bottling it without fining to allow the exceptional quality fruit to take center stage, revealing rich, ripe flavors naturally balanced by pleasing acidity.

Celebrating its 175th anniversary as the Eden Valley’s top Riesling producer, the attractive 96 pt. 2022 Pewsey Vale Riesling “continues the theme of value-for-money from this great vineyard” according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin, an appealing, deliciously dry Riesling from an excellent 2022 vintage unbeatably priced for stashing away by the case to enjoy often.

A breathtakingly joyful wine! Stunning nose of ripe orange and melon! This is simultaneously extremely expressive, juicy and elegant on the medium-bodied palate. Near-perfect balance right through the super-mineral finish that’s super precise and really uplifting. Amazing value for money! Drink or hold. Screw cap.

This 2022 Single Vineyard Estate Riesling is rocky, dry, floral, fleshy, tight, talc-y, curved and flowing. It has austerity and meat in equal measure, and it lingers long after the wine has gone. What a great wine. It's pleasurable and age-worthy, with brilliant structural integrity and impressive freshness. It's complex as well. Great!

94 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Mar 2024)
