The Massolino 2022 Barbaresco Albesani shows structure and focus. The wine reveals a vertical delivery of fruit aromas along with crushed stone, sambuca and blue flower. There is a salty note at the end, and the wine shows polished, finely grained tannins. Albesani is another example of a wine that defies the heat of the vintage to show elegance and grace.

Made from 50-plus-year-old vines, this MGA bottling is more overtly mineral driven than the classic Barbaresco. It also demonstrates greater density yet is still gorgeously perfumed with raspberry, strawberry, mint and rose. Juicy acidity brings inner radiance, and those chalky, savoury minerals cleanse the mouth. The extra depth and length are worth the price of admission, but both make for worthwhile purchases. Franco Massolino notes that given the tiny bunches, Albesani produced approximately 50% less than average in 2022, making green harvest unnecessary.

A medium ruby red hue, the 2022 Barbaresco Albesani is also quite expressive and detailed in its perfume on opening, with ripe notes of raspberries, fresh roses, fresh thyme, and chalky earth. It has refreshing energy, although it’s also approachable. It has a very charming and well-balanced fruitiness with sweet tannins, an elegant, medium-bodied feel throughout, and even length and perfume on the finish. It’s a lovely offering that manages the heat of the vintage with grace. Drink 2025-2035.
