The 2022 Volnay “Santenots” from Monsieur Glantenay is equally stunning. The bouquet is deep, pure and classically black fruity in profile, wafting from the glass in a mix of sweet cassis, black plums, black cherries, gamebird, dark soil tones, bitter chocolate, violets, vanillin oak and a topnote of currant leaf. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and sappy at the core, with fine mineral undertow, tangy acids, ripe tannins and a very long, structured and impeccably balanced finish. This is going to be outstanding once it is ready to drink and will live a very, very long life.

The 2022 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru was completely de-stemmed as Glantenay finds that the terroir already provides sufficient tannins. The nose is delineated and focused with blackberry, bilberry and light oyster shell scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. Plenty of freshness here, quite citric in style, with white pepper and clove towards the finish. Good persistence and freshness. This should mature with class.

This site can ripen rapidly, but Glantenay appears to have picked the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots at the perfect date, delivering a medium to full-bodied, velvety and harmonious wine evocative of sweet cherries, dark berries, licorice and spices. Supple and seamless, with sweet, powdery tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window.
