From “a haven for characteristically crisp, dry and minerally whites” according to Decanter’s Alessandra Piubello, the fresh and vibrant 92 pt. 2022 Enrico Serafino Grifo del Quartaro Gavi offers zesty citrus and fragrant stone fruit flavors with grassy, nutty undertones and a refreshing saline-tinged finish calling for another sip, a terrific value for Gavi fans and anyone seeking an outstanding Italian white to enjoy often.
With a history dating back to 1878 in Canale d’Alba in southeastern Piedmont, the Enrico Serafino winery went through a period of corporate ownership in the later 1900’s before being purchased in 2003 by the Krause Gentile family, American entrepreneurs who famously (or perhaps infamously depending on who you ask) purchased the renowned Barolo producer Vietti in 2016. Named for the centuries’ old griffin-embossed coins used by Genovese landowners in the region, the 2022 Grifo del Quartaro Gavi is sourced from a six-hectare vineyard in Monterotondo di Gavi, its location north of Genoa near the Ligurian border boasting ideal conditions for producing fresh white wines from the native Cortese grape. Planted in a mix of marl, clay and chalk soils, the vines are situated on sloping hills with winds off the Ligurian sea flowing up to the snow-capped Apennines imparting minerality and distinctive salinity to the wines. Fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel tanks, Piedmont native and winemaker Paolo Giacosa aged the 2022 Enrico Serafino Grifo del Quartaro Gavi for 3-8 months with regular stirring on the lees and two months longer in bottle, expertly balancing rich, mouth filling fruit and lively minerality “with fresh acidity and a crisp and expressive finish” according to James Suckling.
Among the top rated Gavi wines in the vintage, the mouthwatering 92 pt. 2022 Enrico Serafino Grifo Del Quartaro Gavi is refreshingly delicious whether sipped along or paired in the traditional Ligurian style with seafood dishes, an easy drinking Italian white skillfully crafted and affordably priced to fill the cooler and enjoy often. |

Tangy mixed citrus aromas with savory herbal notes flow into notes of jasmine and ginger on the nose. The textured and complex palate gives notes of peach, sea salt and blanched almond finishing with focused acidity.

The Enrico Serafino 2022 Gavi del Comune di Gavi Grifo del Quartaro is chiseled and tonic with citrus, white grapefruit, unripe peach and crushed oyster shell. The Cortese grape always has a salty side, and that is precisely what makes this grape so perfect to pair with seafood dishes like fish carpaccio drizzled with lime juice.

Passion fruit and apricot aromas and flavors are effusive in this juicy white, which is vibrant and harmonious, leaving a lingering aftertaste of cut grass and citrus. Drink now. 7,500 cases made, 5,000 cases imported.

Fresh and perfumed nose with a hint of white almond to the green apples and peaches. Smoothly rendered on the medium-bodied palate with fresh acidity and a crisp and expressive finish. Drink now.
