The 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru wafts from the glass with aromas of plums and cherries mingled with smoke, licorice and rose petals. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, sweet tannins and lively acids, this harmonious but authoritative wine is one of the highlights of the Ponsot range this year.

The 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a lovely bouquet, very pure and mineral-driven, certainly demonstrating more complexity and nuance than the preceding Corton-Bressandes. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. This overtly sapid, marine-influenced Chapelle gets the saliva flowing. There is good density on the finish. I can see this aging with style, but it will require time in the bottle.

6 barrels. Alexandre Abel, the winemaker, is also looking for lighter extraction here to retain elegance. A much deeper imperial purple colour. The bouquet is discreet but clearly signals an intensity of fruit beneath. This is largely in raspberry but with fresh cherry behind. A little more than medium bodied, with plenty of energy at the back of the palate, and the typical quite firm acidity of the vintage here. Tasted Nov 2023.

The Chapelle-Chambertin from Ponsot is hitting its stride. This delicious wine has abundant ripe, plummy fruit with suitable complexity from notes of earth, leather, and game. The texture is focused, powerful, and dense – it seemed to me a very 'Côte de Nuits' style wine in its structure and length. It is produced from grapes from the domaine's half-hectare of vines in En Gémeaux, picked late, destemmed, and aged after fermentation in used casks to create this substantial wine that will age for decades.

This is also notably ripe while managing to retain good freshness on the pretty liqueur-like aromas of essence of red currant, forest floor, crushed anise and hints of violet and green tea. There is again evident minerality to the gorgeously textured and even finer medium weight flavors that are caressing but punchy, all wrapped in a firm, indeed almost chewy, youthfully austere and balanced finale. This is a wine that's going to need at least moderate patience as it's presently compact and tightly wound.
