An elegant White Burgundy crafted from old vine Chardonnay, the richly concentrated 93 pt. 2022 Domaine Feuillat-Juillot Montagny Les Coeres 1er Cru offers layers of fresh aromatic fruit with saline minerality on a vibrant finish, a beautifully balanced, terroir-expressive White Burgundy from one of the region’s top producers delivering outstanding quality at a value price.

Growing up in Burgundy as the daughter of a highly regarded Mercurey winemaker, Françoise Feuillat-Juillot began working with a small grower in Montagny-les-Buxy in 1989, taking over management of the domain when he unexpectedly passed away and purchasing the winery and vineyards in 2004. Situated at the south end of the Cote Chalonnaise, Feuillat-Juillot’s vineyards span 14 hectares across 13 different premier crus, her top cuvee sourced from a 4-hectare parcel of old vines in Les Coeres, the largest 1er Cru in Montagny and considered its most exceptional terroir. Located at an altitude of 300 meters on an east exposure, the hillside vineyard is planted with low yielding vines averaging 60 years of age in marl and limestone soils, the evenly ripened Chardonnay grapes handpicked and fermented in large French oak casks. Employing regular stirring of the lees for up to 10 months, winemaker Francoise aged the fresh and alluring 2022 Domaine Feuillat-Juillot Montagny Les Coeres 1er Cru for 12 months in a mix of mostly used 500 liter demi-muids and traditional Burgundian barrels with light filtering before bottling, yielding intense, aromatic fruit balanced by “a superb spine of acidity” according to Neal Martin of Vinous on a lingering, graceful finish.

Describing 2022 as “a very fine vintage” and “a year to snap up,” Decanter’s Andy Howard includes Domaine Feuillat-Juillot among his top 10 producers in Montagny and “a serious alternative for consumers seeking out high-quality Bourgogne wines at affordable prices,” the luscious 93 pt. 2022 Domaine Feuillat-Juillot Montagny Les Coeres 1er Cru delivering the richness and complexity of old vine Chardonnay at a bargain price and promising White Burgundy lovers the satisfaction of a great deal with every pleasurable pour.

Once again the top cuvee from Domaine Feuillat-Juillot shines. The 1er Cru Montagny 'Coeres' from an old parcel of 60 year old vines, displays what old vines are all about: naturally limiting yields in a larger harvest, drought resistance in a dry vintage, and less solar affect in a warmer summer. Tasting the five bottlings of 2022 at Feuillat-Juillot, this was clear. Rich and dense with impeccable balance, aromatics of mineral and pure old vine Chardonnay. Serious Burgundy bargain these days.
