Fragrant with waxy rose florals and dried herbs. There’s a strong savoury thread amid the bright red and black fruits. The palate has Wairau’s silky red fruits but it’s cut through with plenty of firm, dry, ripe fruit tannins – there’s some supporting (fine, spicy French) oak, too, but it’s very well integrated. A structured style with satisfying character and depth. Organic.

The 2022 Waimaunga Pinot Noir is concentrated and textural, with a complex array of cherries, garden roses, crushed shells and sweet tobacco leaf. There is also graphite, star anise and shaved fennel—a distinctly minty/metallic glean through the finish. The wine is blessed with that ultra-attractive forest floor character, which really complexes and beguiles. I love this. Recommended. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam.
