The Tellier brothers, Alexandre and Quentin, are crafting some of the most compelling récoltant-manipulant Champagnes on the market. We’ve paid two visit to the domaine in the past year, and each time the range was simply stunning. The 2022 Les Massales, their flagship blend, is composed of 55% Chardonnay, 25% Meunier, and 20% Pinot Noir, all 1er Cru fruit from their home village of Moussy and neighboring Pierry. The Massales’ personality is a beautiful interpretation of the elegance and precision that define all of Tellier’s wines. The nose opens with gorgeous yet understated white and pink floral notes, fine autolytic undertones, fleshy red pear, yellow plum, and vibrant lemon. The palate starts off shy and needs air, but it quickly becomes vinous and complex even as it maintains a strident mineral core, excellent cut, and racy acidity. The sunny disposition of the 2022 vintage is clear, with deep, fresh tree fruits, exuberant ripeness, and focused, concentrated florals. It carries its 4g/L dosage in such integrated fashion that it’s virtually unnoticeable if you don’t know it’s there. Best of all, it’s still in its primary phase and will take on much more complexity and intrigue with a few years in the cellar.
