“One of Burgundy's best values in whites”

Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

A pure expression of Chardonnay from the outstanding 2022 Chablis vintage, the utterly delicious 93 pt. 2022 Jean Marc Brocard Chablis Vieilles Vignes de 1946 offers enticing fresh fruit hinting of citrus and salty air with vibrant minerality and an impressively long finish that will have Chablis fans reaching for another pour, an age worthy White Burgundy now exclusively available from B-21 and a serious bargain to scoop up by the case.

Driving into the medieval village of Chablis in Burgundy’s northernmost region, the narrow roads reveal gabled houses with slate roofs leading past a stunning 12th century Gothic church to the small tasting boutique of Jean-Marc Brocard, tucked among the glass storefronts of artisan butchers, bakeries and cafes in the center of town. Located just down the Route de Chablis in the nearby village of Prehy, Jean Marc Brocard’s winery was established with 1.5 hectares of vines from his wife’s family nearly 50 years ago, the estate’s vineyard holdings expanding to over 200 hectares and now under the direction of his son Julien who joined his father as vineyard manager in 1997. A passionate advocate of sustainable viticulture, Julien was the first to adopt biodynamic practices in the region and spearheaded the estate’s transition to organic farming, the 2022 Vieilles Vignes de 1946 sourced from a single plot of low-yielding vines over 70 years of age planted near the winery just after the end of World War II. After fermenting with indigenous yeasts, the classically styled 2022 Brocard Chablis Vieilles Vignes de 1946 was aged on the lees in stainless steel imparting a creamy texture to the intensely concentrated old vine Chardonnay fruit, balanced by bright, integrated acidity with distinct minerality reflecting the vineyard’s fossil-rich Kimmeridgian soils and structured to evolve gracefully over the next decade.

Described by Decanter as an “overwhelmingly positive” vintage producing healthy, high-quality fruit, the impressive 93 pt. 2022 Brocard Chablis Vieilles Vignes de 1946 elegantly balances the vintage’s ripeness with precise acidity and chalky minerality reflecting its single vineyard origins at a fraction of the price of 1er Crus, an unbeatable value for White Burgundy lovers and anyone looking for a deliciously satisfying everyday white to stock the cooler and cellar to enjoy often.

Dense and rich style with a hint of reduction on the nose. More peach fruit than the citrus seen in Brocard's other Chablis. Love the extra weight here, very classy and fine. Aged in wood (petit foudre of 15 hectolitres). Comes from a massale selection planted after the Second World War.

Old vine weight and density expected and delivered. Great aromatics. Mineral with lemon peel aromatics. Recently bottled, so rewarded when allowed to open, at least through 2023. Due to the richness of the old vines, this is drinking really well now, and for a few years. As white Burgundy goes these days, this is an exceptional value.
