A complex and spicy wine with aromas of cedar, licorice, black cherries, cassis and earth. Full-bodied and extracted but not without elegance, it shows density and velvety tannins, with great balance in the finish. It’s tense and savory. Quite muscular to drink now, but it will be at its best in 2026.

The 2022 Ilatraia is terrific. Mocha, espresso, blackberry, chocolate, licorice, menthol, dried herbs and cloves offer the warm embrace of the Tuscan Maremma. Readers will find a generous, inviting wine that has so much to give. This is a fine edition of Ilatraia, especially within the context of the year.

Although dark in color and backed by dense, almost chewy tannins, this red leans more toward elegance. Saturated with blackberry, plum, pomegranate and mineral flavors that persist through the long aftertaste, this offers refined tannins in the end and finds its equilibrium. Needs time. Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2029 through 2047. 3,750 cases made, 540 cases imported.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Brancaia 2022 Ilatraia (with 40,000 bottles made) is a blend of 40% Petit Verdot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. The wine pours forth with an inky black appearance and hearty aromas of blackberry preserves and sweet baking spice. This is a bold red blend, with broad shoulders, rich texture and chalky tannins. The wine never feels too heavy, however, and there is an elegant moment of leanness on the mid-palate.
