Extremely perfumed, with aromas of flowers and dark cherries. Medium-bodied with power, finesse and length. Wonderful now, with complexity and sophistication. Bright is the word. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Villa Cigliano is a potent, driving wine. Dark red cherry, iron, white flowers, spice, leather and rose petal open with a bit of coaxing. This young Gran Selezione needs a ton of time to be at its very best. I find the 2022 a bit closed today, but I view that as a positive in terms of its aging potential. The 2022 could turn out to be better than the 2021. The Villa Cigliano was aged in French oak barrels, 50% new.

The historic Villa Cigliano sprawls over the gentle hills of San Casciano between 250 and 420m. The very warm, sundrenched site is among the first to be picked and yields a round, generous wine with palpable ripeness. Ageing in French oak barriques – mostly new – is seamlessly absorbed. Mocha-infused cherry, sandalwood, nutmeg and tarragon gush from the glass. Soft contours meet plush, polished tannins. There is plenty of depth, well matched by an intrinsic freshness of succulent acidity. Blood orange and pink grapefruit leave the palate cleansed. Very seductive.
