They say a rising tide lifts all boats, and as Nebbiolo has reached stunning new heights in the past decade, so has Piedmont's unsung hero, Barbera. The Nizza village is arguably the epicenter for great Barbera d'Asti (it was recently granted its own DOCG), and Olim Bauda's 95-point Riserva bottling from the epic 2021 vintage demonstrates the potential of the grape in a great vintage, from great vineyards, and in the hands of a talented winemaker.
"This is Barbera in its Sunday best - classic, refined, polished to a shine but still showing real soul." - Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast
The vineyard has been owned by the Bertolino family since 1961, and the vines date to 1979, so they're starting to show true old-vine potential and pedigree in their finished wines. The sandy, clay-marl soils are ideal for Barbera, and the result is a wine in which "everything finds its place." Extended aging in French oak takes the normally bright, racy, fruity Barbera grape to new levels of concentration, depth, and sophistication. "This dark, richly textured Barbera certainly has a lot to offer," notes Antonio Galloni in his 94-point review. If you really want to understand Piedmont, you have to get familiar with Barbera at its best, and this 2021 certainly checks all the boxes. |
