This shows red fruit, a pleasant herbal note and touches of dried flowers. On the palate, it has pronounced tannins, with the fruit caught in a compelling tension between acidity and tannin structure. Made from old vines, and fermented as whole clusters. Enjoyable now, but with the substance to age. Drink or hold.

The 2021 El Esquilón has lower alcohol, 11.7%, and more freshness. It was produced in the same way as the 2020, with maybe a slightly shorter maceration. This is from a place close to El Ciruelo, but here the exposition is east-west. And even though the soils are similar, the tannic profile is different; here, the tannins are a little more rustic, more Nebbiolo than Pinot. This feels quite open on the fruit-driven nose; there is less reduction than in the 2020 I tasted next to it. 4,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023.
