The 2021 Syrah Originals Estate, from vines planted in 1993, opens with a lovely perfume of violet and lavender that complement a core of blackberry and blackcurrant, plus latent earth and savory undertones. The full-bodied palate has detailed, highly perfumed flavors, silky tannins and fireworks of fresh acidity. it finishes long and mineral-laced. 550 cases were made, and it will be released in October of 2024.

The 2021 Syrah Originals was 50% destemmed and raised in neutral French oak. Medium-bodied and balanced, with a focused, layered style, it has terrific red and black fruits, some iron and bloody, meaty, peppery nuances, ripe and nicely integrated tannins, and a great finish. This classic, incredibly compelling, and impeccably made Syrah will evolve for a solid 10-15 years. It's brilliant and in the same ballpark as the 2016.

Dark, somewhat musty earth aromas meet with beach tar and smashed berry aromas on the complex nose of this bottling. The palate is dense and rich with toasted cocoa and roasted berry flavors, but it's the searing acidity that will ensure a long life. Drink now-2041.

The 2021 Syrah Originals is laced with dark red fruit, mint, white pepper, dried herbs and spice. The Originals is a wine that captures the essence of Ballard Canyon in its earthy, layered savoriness. There's more depth and pedigree than in the Hilltops. This is nicely done.
