Creamy nose of brioche, lemon curd, macadamia nuts, minerals and a touch of butterscotch. Supple, round and full-bodied, with very fresh acidity and a long-lasting finish. Goes on for quite a while. A very consistent white from Roda. Mostly old-vine viuras with some malvasia and garnacha blanca. Drink or hold.

A blend of Viura with some Malvasía Riojana and Garnacha Blanca, fermented in wooden vats and bocoys (about 700L) of French oak where it spent 18 months before a further 18 months in bottle. Deep in colour, it has expressive pain d’épices and honeysuckle aromas, while the palate is voluptuous, driven by citrussy acidity, finishing with stone fruit bitterness and a touch of salinity. Freshly modern with just a nod to classic, oaked white Rioja. Class.

The third vintage of their only white is the 2021 Roda I Blanco, produced with the grapes from the white vines planted in their old vineyards, usually at the beginning of the rows, mostly Viura with some Malvasía Riojana and Garnacha Blanca. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in large oak barrels for 18 months. 2021 was a very complete year with a long cycle when the grapes ripened thoroughly but kept very good acidity. It has a golden color and a nuanced, expressive and clean nose with notes of pollen, yellow fruit, herbs and flowers, and it has a polished palate with pungent flavors that brought back memories from the traditional whites from Rioja with some spiciness and hints of mushrooms and old caves. It's ripe without excess at 14% alcohol, keeping very good freshness and acidity, denoted by a pH of 3.2 and six grams of tartaric acid per liter, giving it a round but vibrant mouthfeel. I found it delicious and ready to drink, but it should also develop nicely in bottle. It's their finest white to date. 16,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.

The 2021 Roda I Blanco is a blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, aged 18 months in 500-liter barrels. Golden in hue, it opens with pear, baked apple, quince and dried citrus peel, layered with oak and nutty hints. Broad and creamy, with vibrant acidity and chalky grip, fruit and oak are in harmony during the long finish. The 2021 is a compact, rich, modern white from Rioja.
