Moving over to the Eola-Amity Hills, the 2021 Pinot Noir Canary Hill Vineyard is packed with energetic tension, opening to notes of crushed stone, ripe pomegranate, and rosemary. Focused, with balanced ripeness and even-keeled acidity, it’s seamless and long on the palate, with sweet tannins and a refined feel. It has fantastic energy, with delicate incense on the long finish, and will be an age-worthy wine to enjoy over the coming 10-12 years.

The 2021 Canary Hill Vineyard bottling of pinot noir from Kelley Fox hails from the Home Block section of the vineyard, which was planted in 1995. The wine comes in at an even thirteen percent octane, with the bunches from this organically-farmed vineyard completely destemmed in this vintage. It was raised entirely in older oak barrels. The bouquet is gorgeous, with a lovely black fruity patina to its constellation of black cherries, sweet dark berries, pomegranate, complex soil tones, black tea, woodsmoke and a gentle floral topnote redolent of peonies. On the palate the wine is pure, precise and full-bodied, with great elegance to its personality, a superb core of black fruit, fine mineral drive and grip, seamless tannins and a long, complex and dancing young finish. Everything here is so harmonious that it is easy to overlook that this is still a young wine in need of extended cellaring to allow its secondary layers of complexity to fully emerge. Don’t drink it too young!
