The 2021 Riesling Steinmassl, from an elevated site of weathered gneiss, schist and amphibolite, was half fermented in stainless steel and wood, then transferred fully to wood to mature on lees. Only gentle citrus foliage makes it to the nose. The palate, however, is a vision of citrus: lemon zest and juice, and intense crushed leaves. Ripeness and the smoothness of yeast provide a gentle backdrop, while zestiness and freshness are undeniable—even radiant. This finishes very long. (Bone-dry)

With a fine, aromatic and spicy nose of peach and stone fruit, Loimer's 2021 Ried Steinmassl 1ÖTW Riesling is intensely fruity and complex on the palate, with a grippy phenolic structure and a stimulating salty-spicy finish. It's another top wine from Fred Loimer that could have a long life ahead of it if it weren't already so insanely attractive. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at Schloss Grafenegg, September 2023.

The attractive nose of cooked quince and melted butter pulls you into this texturally complex, full-bodied yet gentle dry riesling. Then comes quite a blast of stony and candied orange character at the long finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.
