Few wines in South America have the reference-point track record to match Concho Y Toro's tête de cuvée Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon, and now with the crown of #1 Wine of 2024 from Wine Spectator, even fewer will. Ever since the release of the Top 10 last year, it's been a struggle to keep this collectible trophy in stock, but we just sourced a new, super-sharp parcel that can put it in your cellar for the best price in the country.
"This Cabernet exemplifies the elegance of wines from Puente Alto in the Maipo Valley." - Wine Enthusiast
First planted in 1883 by its namesake, this estate has been the cornerstone of the Concho Y Toro brand for three decades, only producing a single wine from painstaking, visionary viticulture and vinification. The 2021 rendition is a landmark for the estate in many ways, and the wine reflects the momentous vintage. "A remarkable effort that channels the finesse of the vintage with rich, muscular edges" according to Wine Spectator, this is the quintessential expression of Chilean Cabernet and the fulfillment of Don Melchor's vision when he planted the property. Wine Advocate's Matthew Luczy called "the most classic and timeless iteration" in a recent vertical tasting spanning the entire history of the wine, and its near perfect score from James Suckling further underscores the stunning, world-class collectible appeal on offer. If you've been hunting for this acclaimed collectible, this is a no-brainer opportunity to load up, as we don't know when we'll see it again. |

Ashy graphite, cassis, iron, blackberries and a hint of cigar box and chocolate. Lots of violets, too. Rich and intense with a full-bodied palate. Showing density and very fine but structured tannins. Long and intense finish with lots of flavors. 93% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc and 3% merlot. One of the best over the last few years. Drinkable now, but will fledge and hold very well in the next 20 years.
99 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Dec 2023)
The 2021 Don Melchor is dark garnet red in the glass. The restrained nose offers pure fruity notes such as blackcurrant with hints of leaves and black tea, refined woody aromas, and gentle touches of plum and red bell pepper. In the mouth, it’s intense with mild juiciness and rounded tannins. The taut palate gradually grows more profound as it develops cedar flavors at the back of the throat before the long, rewarding finish. A wine that is more suggestive than explicit as it slowly envelops you in its different layers. The added freshness brings out the clarity of the fruity flavors.
97 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous (Jun 2023)
A remarkable effort that channels the finesse of the vintage with rich, muscular edges, offering a base of graphite and cassis notes that gather around elegant layers of dried rosemary and white pepper. The richly textured core of raspberry and plum flavors show precision and just enough acidity to keep things sailing onto the finish around well-integrated tannins and touches of cocoa. Best from 2026 through 2040. 18,300 cases made, 5,000 cases imported.
96 points, Aaron Romano, Wine Spectator (May 2024)
