Simmering with intrigue, this has notes of violets and roses on the nose, sugared plums and sugared almonds, cinnamon and toast. The palate is huge, blending width and tannic structure with clarity and good acidity. Lots of liquorice comes through, as well as savoury herbs, a little meat, and a lot of depth. Very promising. Tannins need time to soften. Menthol, chewy and so tasty.

The 2021 Bandol from Domaine La Bastide Blanche is a beautiful young wine. The wine is a touch less ripe than the last three vintages I have tasted from this estate, as it comes in at an even fourteen percent octane in 2021. The wine’s aromatic constellation is beautifully precise and nascently complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of cassis, dark berries, cigar smoke, tree bark, a complex base of dark soil tones, a touch of meatiness, cedar and a topnote of gentle garrigue tones. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and full-bodied, with a superb core of black fruit, great soil inflection and grip, ripe, well integrated tannins and a very long, complex and seamlessly balanced finish. This is first class Bandol!
