With no end in sight to the skyrocketing prices in Burgundy as revealed in the recent 2021 releases, white Burgundy fans seeking an outstanding value need look no further than the exceptional 93pt 2021 Domaine Feuillat-Juillot Montagny 1er Cru "Les Coeres" offering unctuous, energetic fruit with supple texture and scintillating minerality, incredibly priced.
Established nearly three decades ago, Domaine Feuillat-Juillot is located in Montagny in the Côte Chalonnaise of Burgundy directly south of Beaune, a lesser known AOC that boasts striking similarities to the Cote d'Or in both soil and elevation. As the daughter of highly regarded Mercurey producer Michel Juillot, founder Françoise Feuillat-Juillot has been immersed in Burgundy winemaking for nearly her entire life, her domain now encompassing 14 hectares of sustainably farmed vines spread among 13 different premier crus. Considered the largest 1er cru in the AOC covering 34 hectares, "Les Coères" is considered the top growing site in the Montagny amphitheater, planted with Chardonnay vines averaging 60 years of age in chalky marl and limestone soils on a sloping hillside at around 300 meters of altitude with an optimal east/southeast exposure. Fermenting it entirely in 20% new French oak, Francoise aged the 2020 Domaine Feuillat-Juillot Montagny 1er Cru "Les Coeres" on the lees in 500 liter French oak barrels for 12 months, yielding lively aromatics hinting of vanilla and fresh layered fruit with crisp minerality, declared "a top Montagny" by Vinous critic Neal Martin.
Representing "the very top drawer" in the Montagny AOC according to Vinous, the 93pt 2021 Domaine Feuillat-Juillot Montagny 1er Cru "Les Coeres" delivers exceptional quality at an unheard of value – from an "exceptional Burgundy vintage" according to Decanter but with very limited yield. |
