The 2021 Massal 1945 Carménère, is a lot sharper, peppery, spicy and varietal than the riper 2020 from a warmer and drier year that I tasted next to it. This has 13.9% alcohol and good acidity, coming through as balanced, with fine-grained tannins. It's very good and very good for the price too. 30,000 bottles were produced and bottled at two times: in May and at the end of the following year after the harvest, after maturing in untoasted 4,000-liter oak foudre and used 225- and 300-liter barrels for one year.

The 2021 Carménère Massal 1945 from Almahue, Cachapoal, was aged in French oak barrels and concrete eggs. Bright purple in the glass. The fruity nose delivers blueberry and blackcurrant notes with hints of herbs. Has quite a silky feel for the variety with polished tannins that make it an easygoing, medium-bodied red.

Red and black currants, fresh plums, sliced chilis and mint chocolate on the nose. Fruity and silky with a medium body, soft tannins and transparent, youthful and pure fruit character. Delicious now.
